  13.    Release 4.14 of Lotus Notes is now available for download off the Web
  14.        using the NEW and IMPROVED Lotus Notes Incremental Installer.

  16. The Lotus Notes Incremental Installer is a way for you to update your files
  17.  to the latest Notes release without having to reinstall the whole program.
  18.     The latest Incremental Installer updates Lotus Notes Release 4.13 to
  19.    Release 4.14 and can be downloaded from the Notes Network Information
  20.             Center Web site, Notes.Net site at http://notes.net.

  107. A. Support for the Incremental Installer is covered under existing Notes
  108. Support contracts with the exception of problems encountered accessing the

  112. A. No password is required. The Incremental Installer is a free download.

  114. Q. Why would you want to use the Incremental Installer?
  115. A. The average Notes installation kit is 20 Meg (90 Meg for UNIX) . Instead
  116. of distributing an entire Notes install kit for every maintenance release
  117. to your users, you can distribute the Incremental Installer. The
  118. Incremental Installer uses a binary difference engine to apply only the
  119. required changes to each program file to make it an exact duplicate of the
  120. target program file. The size of the Incremental Installer depends on the
  121. scope of the changes between Notes releases.

  123. Q. Will Lotus continue to ship Notes maintenance releases on CD-ROM?
  124. A. Yes, Lotus will continue to make available all Notes maintenance
  125. releases on CD-ROM though all normal channel distribution mechanisms as
  126. well automatically sending it to all Notes Passport maintenance customers
  127. in agreement with their contracts. The Incremental Installer is an added
  128. convenience to our customers making it easier to upgrade to the latest
  129. available Notes release.

  131. Q. How do you download and run the Incremental Installer?
  132. A. To download the Incremental Installer, access the Notes Information
  133. Center Web site, NotesNIC (http://www.notes.net) and choose the "Software
  134. Updates and Downloads" selection. Follow the links to the Release Downloads
  135. page. Available on this page are the instructions on running the
  136. Incremental Installer and an Additional Information URL where you can find
  137. the Release Notes for Release 4.14, and a readme.txt containing the list of
  138. fixes in Release.

  141. the Incremental Installer?
  142. A. No, this version of the Incremental Installer will only upgrade a Notes
  143. Release 4.13 client or server to Notes Release 4.14. To use the Incremental
  144. Installer, you must have the standard program files for Notes Release 4.13
  145. currently installed.

  148. 4.13?
  149. A. Notes Release 4.14 is the latest Notes R4 maintenance release and
  150. contains over 76 enhancements. For a complete list of all enhancements look
  151. over the readme.txt and the Notes Release 4.14 Release Notes which are also
  152. available on the NotesNIC Web site.

  154. Q. What are the system requirements for running the Incremental Installer?
  155. A. The only system requirements for running the Incremental Installer are:
  156. *Notes Release 4.13 must be the version of Notes that you are currently
  157. running.
  158. *You have not changed, added, or deleted any .dll or .exe files (or any
  159. shared libraries or executables on UNIX).
  160. *You must have the amount of available disk space to run the Incremental
  161. Installer specified in the Instructions.
  162. *Notes must be shut down before running the Incremental Installer.

  164. Q. Can the Incremental Installer be run if there are any Notes Addins or
  165. APIs installed on the machine?
  166. A. Yes, the Incremental Installer can be used to upgrade a Notes Release
  167. client or server that is also running any Notes Addins or APIs.

  169. Q. Is it necessary to backup any files before running the Incremental
  170. Installer?
  171. A. Yes, If you have modified any of the Templates in your Notes directory,
  172. you should make backup copies before running the Incremental Installer as
  173. the existing ones will be replaced. As an added precaution, you could also
  174. make a backup of all important files and databases including:
  175. notes.ini, desktop.dsk, names.nsf, and userid files.

  177. Q. Will the Incremental Installer automatically update the Release Notes to
  178. the latest version?
  179. A. No, this version of the Incremental Installer does not update the
  180. Release Notes automatically. The Notes Release Notes are also available on
  181. the NotesNIC Web site to download. Simply copy the new Release Notes for
  182. (readme.nsf) over the old Release Notes in your Notes Data directory.

  184. Q. Can you uninstall after running the Incremental Installer if you want
  185. to?
  186. A. This version of the Incremental Installer does support a revert feature
  187. for the Windows and OS/2 platforms. To downgrade back to a previous release
  188. of Notes you must rerun the Incremental Installer and follow the onscreen
  189. instructions. NOTE: Your templates will not be downgraded.

  191. The revert feature is not available on the UNIX and Macintosh platforms. If
  192. for some reason you want to downgrade back to a previous release of Notes
  193. you must reinstall the full Notes software from CD-ROM. It is also a good
  194. idea to have your Notes Release 4.13 CD-ROM handy in the event the
  195. Incremental Install is interrupted before it has completed the upgrade as
  196. you will have to reinstall Notes Release 4.13 before running the
  197. Incremental Install again.

  199. Q. Can you download the Incremental Installer to a Network file server and
  200. make it available over the LAN for users that do not have access to the
  201. Web?
  202. A. Yes, you can download all available Incremental Installer executables to
  203. a Network file server and instruct users how to access and run the
  204. appropriate Incremental Installer executable for their platform. On UNIX
  205. the Incremental Installer supports multiple push installs as well as
  206. upgrading a "distribution" from which multiple push installs may also be
  207. performed. See the 4.14 Download Web page for detailed instructions.
