  13. INSTALLSTAR

  15. Version 2.1 of FileStar/2 has a new installation program,
  16. InstallStar by Sierra HyperStar Software (SHSINST.EXE). It is a
  17. derivitive of the previous GTINST by GammaTech, Inc. When
  18. compared to GTINST, InstallStar has a new user interface as well
  19. as new capabilities to deregister classes and close open windows
  20. that may interfere with a normal installation.
  21.  
  22. When applying a FileStar/2 version 2.1 CSD over version 2.0, you
  23. must use SHSINST.EXE. The older GTINST.EXE will not apply CSDs
  24. with a minor version change.

  27. CSD FILES
  28.  
  29. When you download the CSD from an Internet server, you will have
  30. one file named F2100016.EXE. This is a self-extracting executable
  31. zip file which contains:
  32.  
  33.     F2100016.CSD  -   Compressed distribution file
  34.     SHSINST.EXE   -   SHS InstallStar installation program
  35.     SHSINST.HLP   -   Installation program help file
  36.     SHSINST.INF   -   Installation program information file
  37.     CSD_INST.TXT  -   This file.    -

  39. F21 is major/minor version, 00016 is last 5 digits of level.
  40. where 00 is the last two digits of the year and 016 is the
  41. Julian date of the distribution.

  44. CSD INSTALLATION
  45.  
  46. This CSD should be applied in the existing FILESTAR directory
  47. (target directory) to preserve your existing setup. If applied
  48. over version 2.0, the installation program (InstallStar)
  49. refreshes all the original distribution files and creates
  50. sub-directories named INFOZIP and INSTALL to hold the appropriate
  51. files. After copying files to these directories, InstallStar then
  52. deletes the old files of the same name from the FileStar/2
  53. directory. It creates a new WPS Desktop folder named 'FS 2.1'.
  54.  
  55. You cannot install this CSD if FileStar/2 is running from the
  56. target directory. You may install to a different directory if
  57. desired and the FILESTAR.INI file may then be copied to that
  58. directory to preserve existing settings. You will be prompted to
  59. close all FileStar/2 windows if necessary and there may be
  60. install errors that stop the installation if there are sharing
  61. violations. You can prevent such an interruption by closing all
  62. FileStar/2 related windows and dialogs before starting
  63. installation.

  66. Make sure that all of the files in the FileStar/2 target
  67. directory have the RO attribute set OFF. Some of the previous
  68. CSDs set the BPMCC.DLL file to readonly (R).

  71. To install a CSD, perform the following steps:
  72.  
  73.   1.  Copy the self-extracting CSD installation file F2100016.EXE
  74.   to a temporary directory or the directory in which you intend
  75.   to install the program and run it to extract the files.
  76.  
  77.   2.  You may start the install program, SHSINST.EXE, with or
  78.   without the compressed file as a parameter. The F2100016.CSD
  79.   file is the compressed file that contains all other files and
  80.   installation definitions.

  82.     (a) If you start the installation program with a command of
  83.     'SHSINST X:\FILESTAR\F2100016.CSD' you will bypass the Source
  84.     Directory dialog. Note that the full path to the CSD file is
  85.     required.
  86.  
  87.     (b) If you start with 'SHSINST' the Source Directory dialog
  88.     will appear. Press the browse button and find and double
  89.     click the F2100016.CSD file. This will complete the source
  90.     path in the dialog.
  91.  
  92.     NOTE: 
  93.     Some users are failing to add the CSD filename to the source
  94.     path. There may be more than one CSD located in the source
  95.     directory and the user is responsible for selecting the CSD
  96.     file to install.

  98.   3.  Press the 'License' button (required to enable the Install
  99.   button) and read the License. When finished with reading the
  100.   licence, you may read the README.TXT file by pressing the
  101.   'Readme' button.
  102.  
  103.   4.  Press the 'Install' button to start the installation. A
  104.   Target Directory dialog will appear. The Target Directory
  105.   dialog entry field should be displaying the current FileStar
  106.   directory if it is found in the config.sys path statement.
  107.   Otherwise it will be displaying the current directory. If the
  108.   target directory is not set to the FileStar directory, manually
  109.   change the drive/directory to the FileStar directory or use the
  110.   Browse button to find and select the target directory. Press Ok
  111.   to accept the target directory as entered and the extraction of
  112.   files will begin.

  114.   5.  When queried about updating the Desktop, select 'Update'.
  115.  
  116. To insure that the InstallStar program files (SHSINST.EXE,
  117. SHSINST.HLP and SHSINST.INF) are saved for future use, these
  118. files are copied to the FileStar sub-directory INSTALL during
  119. installation. You may delete these files from the installation
  120. directory (either the temporary or FileStar directory) after
  121. installation is complete. It is also recommended that you keep a 
  122. copy of the CSD file in the INSTALL sub-directory.

  124. If you receive a BASE LEVEL INVALID error during installation,
  125. you must reinstall from the original source file(s) and then
  126. apply the CSD. The reason for this is that required data from the
  127. original install is missing in the OS2.INI file.

  130. INSTALLATION CLEANUP
  131.  
  132. Some previous installations by GTINST created a BMP sub-directory
  133. and some did not. To create a consistent structure, this
  134. installation creates the directory if it does not exist and
  135. places the *.bmp files that SHS believes are appropriate for
  136. distribution in that directory. If your installation has bitmap
  137. (BMP) files in the main FileStar directory, please either delete
  138. these files or move them to the BMP directory. The install
  139. program will NOT delete these files from the FileStar directory
  140. since some may be used in the toolbar, in which case the user
  141. will have to modify the toolbar to reflect the directory change.

  143. If the CSD is installed from the FileStar/2 directory, the
  144. install program file (SHSINST.EXE) may be deleted from that
  145. directory after installation - but first check and make sure that
  146. the file is in the INSTALL directory since it may be needed in
  147. the future. You should also save a copy of the CSD file in the
  148. INSTALL directory.
