  71.   2.0   General Notice regarding the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet Option
  72.         Diskette

  75.   The IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet Option Diskette is a "system-bootable"
  76.   diskette.  That is to say, the user can insert the diskette in the
  77.   computer's A: drive and boot the system from the diskette.  The
  78.   diskette is a DOS 5.0 system diskette.
  79.  
  80.   The reason for this feature is to facilitate installation and testing
  81.   of the adapter as described in the "Installation and Testing Instructions"
  82.   document shipped with this product.

  84.   The Option diskette contains an executable file for a program called
  85.   "CONFIG".  This program assists the user with the installation, testing
  86.   and configuration of the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet.
  87.  
  88.   NOTE that the CONFIG program is large in size and requires that sufficient
  89.   system RAM be available to execute.  Hence, if you are running a large
  90.   application or several applications and attempt to run the CONFIG program,
  91.   you may receive an error message.  Depending on your operating system, you
  92.   will see displayed a message such as
  93.  
  94.         "> cannot execute a:\config.exe"
  95.   or    "> program too big to execute"
  96.   or    "> the system cannot complete the process"
  97.  
  98.   These errors are most likely indicating that there is not enough
  99.   space in system memory to run the CONFIG program.
  100.  
  101.   It is recommended that if CONFIG is used, no other memory-consuming
  102.   applications are active.

  105.   3.0   Attention OS/2 Users!
  106.   ---------------------------
  107.  
  108.   The CONFIG program is a DOS-only executable program.  It will not run
  109.   under OS/2.  Hence, OS/2 users will either boot their system from the
  110.   IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet when they wish to execute the CONFIG
  111.   program or they can run CONFIG under a DOS shell.  [OS/2 users: see the
  112.   special note under the section entitled "Installation of Multiple Adapters"
  113.   for more information.]

  117.   4.0   Notice about the MESSAGE.MSG file
  118.   ---------------------------------------
  119.  
  120.   The file named "MESSAGE.MSG" in the root directory of the IBM LAN
  121.   Adapter for Ethernet Option Diskette is used by the CONFIG program
  122.   for program messages.  This file must be located in the same directory as
  123.   CONFIG.EXE when the CONFIG program is used.
  124.  
  125.   If CONFIG is unable to locate the MESSAGE.MSG file, an error message will
  126.   be displayed and CONFIG will abort execution.

  130.   5.0  Notice about Adapter and Cable installation and test
  131.   ----------------------------------------------------------

  133.   The IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet Installation and Testing Instructions
  134.   provide the user with the recommended procedure for installing the
  135.   adapter in a computer, connecting the adapter to the network using the
  136.   desired media interface and configuring the software selectable options
  137.   of the adapter.  The CONFIG program checks that the adapter is
  138.   functionally sound and tests the connection to the network.  If there
  139.   is any problem with the card or the connection, the user will be made
  140.   aware of it via a failure in the "Diagnostics" section of CONFIG.

  142.   Once the CONFIG program verifies that the adapter is functioning properly
  143.   and is connected to the network, a disconnect from the network will prevent
  144.   the user from communicating over the network.  The disconnect may be due
  145.   to a problem on the network, a physical disconnection of the cable to
  146.   or perhaps a card failure.

  148.   If the user experiences difficulties with the IBM LAN Adapter for
  149.   Ethernet subsequent to the initial installation of the adapter, he should
  150.   run diagnostics on the adapter using the CONFIG program.

  154.   6.0  Notice about the use of Shared Memory mode and the Boot PROM
  155.   ------------------------------------------------------------------
  156.  
  157.   The IBM LAN Adapter allows the user to configure the architecture of the
  158.   adapter such that it will operate in "Shared Memory" mode.
  159.  
  160.   This mode of operation will affect the configuration of the computer's
  161.   system memory.
  162.  
  163.   This notice is to alert the user that the memory space selected for the
  164.   IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet's Shared Memory mode must not conflict
  165.   with that of any other adapter installed in the workstation or with
  166.   an address that is used by an expanded-memory manager.
  167.  
  168.   If such a conflict occurs, the computer may "hang" (i.e., not complete
  169.   its power-up routine) when it is re-booted.  Should this happen, the user
  170.   must insert the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet Option Diskette in the computers
  171.   A: drive and re-boot the computer (either by cycling the power or pressing
  172.   the CTL, ALT and DEL keys simultaneously).  The user can then reconfigure
  173.   the adapter and/or system memory to correct the conflict.

  175.   Alternatively, the adapter causing the hang can be moved to another
  176.   computer where the hang does not occur.  Then, use the CONFIG program
  177.   to disable to IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet.

  179.   The same problem can occur when using the Boot PROM on the IBM LAN
  180.   Adapter for Ethernet.
  181.

  184.   The Boot PROM, when activated, will also affect the computer's system
  185.   memory configuration.  Again, the user must make certain that the memory
  186.   space selected for the Boot PROM does not conflict with that of any
  187.   other adapter installed in the workstation or with an address that is used
  188.   by an expanded-memory manager.

  190.   If such a conflict does occur, the computer may hang.  Use the instructions
  191.   above to correct this situation.

  195.   7.0  Attention IBM PC AT Computer users
  196.   ---------------------------------------

  198.   To configure the IBM LAN Adapters for Ethernet in older IBM Personal
  199.   Computers (XT, XT286, AT), you must use a special command to invoke
  200.   the CONFIG program.
  201.  
  202.   To configure a new IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet follow the
  203.   directions in the Installation and Testing Instructions under
  204.   "Configuring the Adapter".
  205.  
  206.   Where you are instructed to type in "CONFIG", type in "CONFG_AT"
  207.   instead.  Then follow the directions to configure your new adapter manually.
  208.   You must know the interrupts and i/o base addresses setting in use
  209.   in your computer before you configure your IBM LAN Adapter for
  210.   Ethernet.  Do not select the settings already in use.

  212.   Do not use the "Configure New Adapter Automatically" option.
  213.  
  214.   To change the configuration of an installed LAN Adapter for Ethernet,
  215.   follow the directions in the Installation and Testing Instructions under
  216.   "Changing a Configuration."

  219.   instead.  Then follow the directions to change your adapters configuration.
