  22. 1) FORMAT FOR INSTALLING DRIVERS NOT SHIPPED WITH LAPS

  25.  When installing drivers not shipped with LAPS, the user is asked to
  26.  indicate the path where the files are located.  The driver file and
  27.  all associated files must be in the same directory.  Following may
  28.  cause the copying of the files to fail:
  29.  
  30.     - the driver file and all associated files are not in the same
  31.       directory.
  32.  
  33.     - the NIF file may not be compatible with LAPS.  The SNIFFLE
  34.       utility can be used to validate the NIF file.  The SNIFFLE
  35.       utility can usually be found with the applets that are shipped.
  36.  
  37.     - incorrect driver file and/or nif file for the adapter card.

  872.   other files already included with MPTS.  The user should save the original
  873.   two files included with MPTS in a separate directory if the user wishes
  874.   to save those files.

  911.   on the driver diskette delivered with the adapter card.  These two
  912.   files are DE220.OS2 and DE220IBM.NIF.  However, this driver does not
  913.   currently function properly with LAN Server.  In order to configure
  914.   for these adapter cards, the user should obtain a different driver
  915.   and NIF from the manufacturer.  The OS/2 NDIS driver provided for
  916.   the DE-200 adapter cards will support the DE-220 adapter cards.
  917.   The NIF provided with the DE-200 is not compatible with LAPS.  The
  918.   user should obtain an alternate NIF from the BBS.

  920.   These adapter cards can be configured by following these steps:

  922.   Step 1.  Download the driver diskette for the DE-200 adapter card
  923.     from the manufacturers BBS.  The file name is DE200.EXE.

  989.   The IBM Parallel Port (prnandis.os2) MAC driver's performance differs
  990.   from the typical LAN connection (Token-Ring, Ethernet) MAC driver's
  991.   performance.  The IBM Parallel Port driver is only meant to be used for
  992.   casual file transfers.

  1007.   for both IBM and non-IBM NICs during adapter auto-detection.  This is
  1008.   equivalent to selecting IBMTOK.NIF.
  1009.   IBMTOKMP.OS2, IBMTOKMP.NIF, and IBMTOKMP.TXT are provided for use on
  1010.   SMP systems in place of IBMTOK.OS2.  This is supported only on SMP
  1011.   systems.  On SMP systems, the user should select "IBM SMP
  1012.   Token-Ring Network Adapter" for both IBM and non-IBM adapters which
  1013.   are supported on SMP.  All other NICs which are supported on SMP
  1014.   systems use the same device driver that is used on uni-processor
  1015.   systems.
  1016.  
  1017.   If you are installing an alternate network adapter, you must change
  1018.   the default value for the Adapter Mode (adapter) parameter during
  1019.   MPTS installation.  The alternate network adapter is the second
  1020.   of two IBM Token-Ring Network adapters.
  1021.  
  1022.   If you install and configure using the unattended method with response
  1023.   files and you have an existing PROTOCOL.INI file from an earlier version
  1024.   of LAPS, you must specify "alternate" with the adapter keyword for an
  1025.   alternate IBM Token-Ring Network adapter.
  1026.  
  1027.   Shared RAM Address:
  1028.  
  1029.     The Shared RAM Address (ram) parameter during MPTS installation is only
  1030.     used for certain non-Micro Channel network adapters.  This parameter is
  1031.     ignored when used with Micro Channel network adapters.  For the Micro
  1032.     Channel network adapters, shared RAM is configured using the reference
  1033.     diskette.  The remainder of this section refers only to non-Micro Channel
  1034.     shared RAM adapters.
  1035.  
  1036.     This parameter specifies the physical RAM location on the network adapter
  1037.     if the network adapter default is not adequate.  This parameter value is
  1038.     a hexadecimal number, located on an 8KB boundary for the IBM Token-Ring
  1039.     Network Adapter and on a 16KB boundary for the IBM Token-Ring Network
  1040.     Adapter II.  For the IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter, this value is
  1041.     on a boundary equivalent to the amount of shared RAM configured.  That
  1042.     is, it is on an 8KB boundary if 8KB of shared RAM is configured, on a
  1043.     16KB boundary if 16KB of shared RAM is configured, on a 32KB boundary
  1044.     if 32KB of shared RAM is configured and on a 64KB boundary if 64KB of
  1045.     shared RAM in configured.
  1046.  
  1047.     The network adapter default RAM location immediately follows the read-
  1048.     only memory (ROM) on the next appropriate page boundary.  This means
  1049.     that if 8KB (similarly 16KB, 32KB or 64KB) of RAM is being configured,
  1050.     then the default RAM location is at the first 8KB (similarly 16KB, 32KB
  1051.     or 64KB) boundary address above ROM.  For example, assume the ROM is at
  1052.     the default location (X'CC00').  Then, on the IBM Token-Ring Network
  1053.     Adapter, the default RAM location will be at the next highest 8KB page
  1054.     boundary which is X'CE00'.  For the IBM Token-Ring Network Adapter II,
  1055.     the default RAM location will be at the next highest 16KB page boundary
  1056.     which is X'D000'.  For the IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter, the
  1057.     default RAM location will depend upon the amount of configured shared
  1058.     RAM.  If 8KB is configured, the default RAM location will be X'CE00'.
  1059.     If 16KB, 32KB, or 64KB are configured, the default RAM location will be
  1060.     at X'D000' since that is the next highest 16KB, 32KB and 64KB boundary.
  1061.  
  1062.     For compatibility with IBM network adapter defaults, set this parameter
  1063.     to X'D800' for the primary network adapter or to X'D400' for the
  1064.     alternate network adapter.
  1065.  
  1066.     You can specify only 4 hexadecimal digits for this parameter in MPTS
  1067.     configuration.  Do not specify the least significant 0 of a 5-digit
  1068.     address.  For example, specify an address of X'D8000' as X'D800'.
  1069.  
  1070.     The following network adapters require shared memory for a shared
  1071.     RAM region starting at the selected RAM location and 8KB of memory
  1072.     for the ROM region:

  1091.     The specified location must not conflict with the address of any other
  1092.     adapter configured and installed in the workstation.  The selection
  1093.     specified cannot overlap with the ROM region used by the IBM Token-Ring
  1094.     Network adapters.  The ROM region is determined by the switch settings
  1095.     on the network adapter.  It is suggested that the ROM region for the
  1096.     primary network adapter be set to X'CC000' and that the ROM region for the
  1097.     secondary network adapter be set to X'DC000'.  However, this region can
  1098.     be set to another available 8KB location in the range from X'C0000'
  1099.     through X'DC000'.
  1100.  
  1101.     Use these guidelines to select the shared RAM location for the
  1102.     appropriate network adapter:
  1103.  
  1104.       IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter:
  1105.  
  1106.         Depending on the setting of the shared RAM page-size switches on
  1107.         the network adapter, the following numbers of bytes of shared RAM
  1108.         are required:
  1109.  
  1110.             8KB (X'2000' bytes)
  1111.             16KB (X'4000' bytes)
  1112.             32KB (X'8000' bytes)
  1113.             64KB (X'10000' bytes)
  1114.  
  1115.         The Shared RAM address parameter cannot conflict with any of the
  1116.         following areas, which also require shared memory:
  1117.  
  1118.           The fixed 24KB region that is required (X'C0000'-X'C5FFF') if
  1119.             a VGA adapter is also being used;
  1120.  
  1121.           The fixed 16KB region that is required (X'C0000'-X'C3FFF') if
  1122.             an EGA adapter is also being used.
  1123.  
  1124.         The location that you specify must not have been previously specified,
  1125.         and it must reside on its corresponding address boundary (or larger).
  1126.         For example, X'D800' is a 32KB address boundary.
  1127.  
  1128.         Use the default of 16KB for the network adapter switch setting.  If
  1129.         you choose this setting, the network adapter mapping function of
  1130.         64KB to 16KB is invoked.  You have the advantage of more storage with
  1131.         less shared RAM used in PC memory.  16KB pages from the 64KB are
  1132.         mapped into the 16KB RAM.
  1133.  
  1134.         You must use X'D000' as the shared RAM location if you set the
  1135.         page-size switch settings to 64KB.
  1136.  
  1137.         When the switch settings on the IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter
  1138.         are set to 64KB, there is a conflict if the switch settings for the
  1139.         ROM region are set to the last 8KB within that same 64KB region.  In
  1140.         this case, the shared RAM region used will be reduced to 56KB,
  1141.         allowing the 8KB necessary for the ROM area (X'DE000').
  1142.  
  1143.       IBM Token-Ring Network Adapter II
  1144.  
  1145.         Select any option that has not been used.  Make sure that the
  1146.         starting address you select was not specified for ROM; 16KB are
  1147.         used.
  1148.  
  1149.       IBM Token-Ring Network Adapter

  1151.         Select any option that has not been used.  Make sure that the
  1152.         starting address you select was not specified for ROM; 8KB are
  1153.         used.

  1155.       IBM PC Network Adapter
  1156.  
  1157.         Do not set the location to X'D0000' or X'D4000' if an IBM PC Network
  1158.         adapter is configured or if you intend to configure an IBM PC
  1159.         Network adapter.  The IBM PC Network adapter always uses X'D0000'-
  1160.         X'D7FFF'.  It also uses X'CC000'-X'CDFFF' if the IBM PC Network
  1161.         adapter was configured as the primary network adapter.  If the
  1162.         IBM PC Network adapter was configured as the alternate network
  1163.         adapter, location X'DC000'-X'DDFFF' is used.
  1164.  
  1165.   Shared RAM Paging:
  1166.  
  1167.     Adapter cards with 64KB of shared RAM support RAM paging.  The IBM
  1168.     Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter and the IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4
  1169.     Adapter/A both have 64KB of shared RAM.  RAM paging is a mechanism
  1170.     that allows the system to view the 64KB of RAM on the adapter in
  1171.     four 16KB pages.  This scenario requires only 16KB of contiguous
  1172.     system memory instead of the 64KB required when not using RAM paging.
  1173.     RAM paging does not work unless the adapter device driver supports it.
  1174.     The device driver IBMTOK.OS2 for both the IBM Token-Ring Network
  1175.     16/4 Adapter and the IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter/A provides
  1176.     this support.
  1177.  
  1178. IBM 16/4 Busmaster Server Adapter/A
  1179.  
  1180.   This network adapter provides 63,392 bytes of memory for buffers.  The
  1181.   Adapter Card Buffer Size parameter found during MPTS configuration
  1182.   defines the size of each buffer, which also determines the total number
  1183.   of buffers available.  The Minimum Adapter Card Transmit Buffers parameter
  1184.   defines the number of buffers for transmitting data only.  The
  1185.   Maximum Adapter Card Transmit Buffers parameter defines the number of
  1186.   buffers to use for transmitting or receiving data.  The remaining buffers
  1187.   are then used for only receiving data.
  1188.  
  1189.   The following memory constraint formulas should be considered when
  1190.   adjusting parameters:
  1191.  
  1192.     1.  CB_RAM = 350 + (142 x Maximum Number of Queued Transmits) +
  1193.         (20 x Minimum Number of Adapter Driver Receive Buffers)
  1194.  
  1195.         CB_RAM must be less than 65,535 bytes for each adapter.
  1196.  
  1197.     2.  RCV_RAM = Size of Adapter Driver Receive Buffer x Minimum Number
  1198.         of Adapter Driver Receive Buffers
  1199.  
  1200.     3.  The sum of CB_RAM and RCV_RAM for all the adapters must be less than
  1201.         1 MB.  CB_RAM is the memory required for the control blocks.  RCV_RAM
  1202.         is the memory required to receive frames.  This memory is allocated
  1203.         at initial program load (IPL) time and is never returned to the
  1204.         system.  These formulas are important so you do not set these values
  1205.         arbitrarily high and cause other applications or drivers to run out
  1206.         of memory in an attempt to increase network performance.
  1207.  
  1208. IBM Infrared NDIS MAC Driver for the ThinkPad 755
  1209.  
  1210.   Due to the speed differences between LAN adapters and the parallel port,
  1211.   several configuration changes are required.  Please refer to the file
  1212.   IRDNDIS.TXT for details.  In addition, the user must specify a MAC
  1213.   address in the protocol.ini.
  1214.  
  1215.   On some older revisions of MPTS, the installation utility may incorrectly
  1216.   configure the IRDNDS.EXE driver in the config.sys.  In this case, the
  1217.   following line in the config.sys:

  1230.   There are two drivers for the Madge Smart Ringnode family.  The
  1231.   SMARTND.OS2 for OS/2 1.3.  The MDGND.OS2 driver is intended for
  1232.   OS/2 2.0 or higher and is a higher performance driver.
