ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Extended Help for FTPPM ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

FTPPM is a Presentation Manager application that uses the File Transfer
Protocol to perform the functions of the FTP client.

 FTPPM transfers files between your PC and a remote host that is running an FTP
server. Specifically, FTPPM allows you to:

 Establish connections between remote hosts
 Put files from your PC to a remote host
 Get files from a remote host to your PC
 Transfer files between two remote hosts
 Delete files on your PC
 Delete files on a remote host
 Work with directories on your PC and remote hosts

 Starting FTPPM

 The following example shows the format of the FTPPM command:

 FTPPM [host [user [password [account] ] ] ]

 The parameters of the FTP command are:

 Parameter Description

 host
      Specifies the remote host to which you are connecting.

 userid
      Specifies the name associated with you by the remote host to which you
      are establishing a connection.

 password
      Specifies your password, which is associated with your user ID by the
      remote host to which you are establishing a connection.

 account_name
      Specifies the account information required by the host.

 Some remote hosts require account information before you can access resources.

 If you are using a NETRC file that contains a valid entry for the remote host,
 you can omit the user and password parameters. FTPPM searches the NETRC file
 to locate these parameters. Any macros defined in the NETRC file are ignored.

 If a connection is successfully established with the provided login
 information, the FTPPM window appears. A file list from the specified host is
 displayed on the screen. The remote host name is displayed at the top left
 corner of the file list. If FTPPM is unable to successfully connect, the
 Remote Logon window appears. You can alter the information or cancel the logon
 attempt.

 FTPPM uses standard Presentation Manager input and output conventions. If at
 any time you need further assistance to understand a menu selection, place the
 cursor on the selection and press the F1 key.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Marking and Unmarking Files or Directories ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

To include a file or directory in the next transfer or deletion action, you
must mark the file or directory by highlighting it.

You can select the following actions for marked local files and directories:

 o Delete the set of marked local files and remove empty, marked directories.

 o Transfer the group of marked remote files and all the files in a marked
   directory to the current remote host.

 You can select the following actions for marked remote files and directories:

 o Delete the set of marked remote files and remove empty, marked directories.

 o Transfer the group of marked remote files and all the files in a marked
   directory to your PC.

 o Transfer the group of marked remote files and all the files in a marked
   directory to another remote host.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Marking Local Files and Directories ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Mark a local file or directory using the mouse, or use the arrow keys to
position the cursor on the file or directory name, and press the space bar to
highlight (mark) the name.

Mark a remote file or directory using the mouse, or use the arrow keys to
position the cursor on the file or directory name, and press the space bar to
highlight (mark) the name.

The files and directories listing show the file name and other information
about the file.  Mark ONLY the file name or directory name.

Some FTP servers provide file and directory listings in which the file names
are displayed with blank spaces separating the file name and the file
extension. When marking files displayed with blank spaces, you must mark both
parts of the file name separately. Selecting Two Part File Names from the
Options pull-down allows you to mark both parts of the file name by selecting
only the left part.

Selecting a marked file or directory name a second time unmarks it. Choosing
Update from the menu unmarks all marked files. In addition, after an action is
performed on a group of marked files, they become unmarked.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Working with local and remote directories ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Changing the Current Working Directory

This section describes how to change the current working directory on your PC
or on the remote host.

On Your PC

There are two methods to change the working directory displayed on your PC:

  1. Move the cursor to the directory box. Select the subdirectory or drive you
     want to be the new current working directory.

  2. Use the Tab key to move to the entry field labeled Local Directory is.
     Type over the directory displayed with a new directory name and press the
     Enter key.

 Setting a Mask for the Displayed PC Files

 Use the Tab key to move to the entry field labeled Local Mask.

 Enter a pattern to specify the file name pattern of the files to be displayed
 in the local files list. A pattern is any combination of ASCII characters. The
 following two characters have special meaning:

 *       The asterisk shows that any character or group of characters can
         occupy that position in the pattern.

 ?       The question mark shows that any single character can occupy that
         position in the pattern.

 On the Remote Host

 There are two methods to change the working directory displayed on the remote
 host.

  1. Use the Tab key to move to the directory and files list. Position the
     cursor on the name of the directory you recognize as the directory or
     drive you want to be the new current working directory. Press the Enter
     key or double click on this directory name. If the cursor is not
     positioned on a valid directory, an error results.

  2. Use the Tab key to move to the entry field labeled Remote Directory is.
     Type over the directory displayed with the new directory name and press
     the Enter key.

 Use the Tab key to move to the entry field labeled Remote Mask.

connection to make the current connection, or close all the connections.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Help for Logon ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

If you did not specify a remote host at the FTPPM command, or if you want to
establish connections with additional remote hosts, use the Logon

FTPPM supports a maximum of 256 simultaneous connections with remote hosts.

The Remote Logon window will appear.  Use the Tab key to move from each entry
field to the next and from the Account entry field to the buttons.

 Button    Description
 OK        Attempts to establish a connection with the information provided.
 Cancel    Cancels a logon attempt and returns to the FTPPM window.

 Note:  The Account and Password information are not displayed as it is
 entered.

 If you are using a NETRC file that contains a valid entry for the remote host,
 you can omit the user and password parameters. FTPPM searches the NETRC file
 to locate these parameters. Any macros defined in the NETRC file are ignored.

 If a connection is successfully established with the provided login
 information, you are returned to the FTPPM window, and the new remote host
 becomes the current remote host. A file list from this host replaces the file
 list of any previous connection. The current remote host name is displayed at
 the top left corner of the file list.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Help for Select Remote Host ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The Select Remote Host  allows you to toggle the current remote host displayed
to the screen.

When you select this option, the Current Hosts window displays a list of the
remote hosts to which you are currently connected.

Use the arrow keys or the mouse to position the cursor to select the remote
host you want to make current.

Use the mouse or the tab keys to move to the following buttons at the bottom of
the screen:

 Button         Description

 OK             Changes the remote host to your selection and returns to the
                FTPPM window.

 Cancel         Cancels a remote host change and returns to the FTPPM window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Help for Closing all Connections ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use Close all Connections to disconnect from all remote hosts.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Help for Options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Before transferring files with FTPPM, you can change the type of transfer and
other conditions to set the environment. The following options can be changed:
with the Options pull-down menu.

 File transfer type.
 Interactive prompting.
 Assignment of unique local file names.
 Assignment of unique remote file names.
 Marking two part remote file names.

 A check mark beside the option indicates that the option is set.

 Note:  You can save the FTPPM settings you selected in this menu when you
 exit.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Help for Transfer Type ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Transfer Types which can be set are:

 ASCII
 Binary

 A check mark will appear to the left of the transfer type from which is
 currently enabled.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Help for ASCII ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

ASCII and Binary are the file transfer types which can be set. ASCII is useful
for transferring files that contain text characters.

Select ASCII from the menu. A check mark will appear to the left of the ASCII A
and the check mark to the left of type Binary will be removed.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Help for Setting File Transfer Type ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

ASCII and Binary are the file transfer types which can be set. Binary file
transfer type is useful for image transfers, such as transferring executable
files.

Select Binary from the menu. A check mark will appear to the left of the Binary


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Help for Interactive Prompting ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Interactive prompting occurs during multiple file transfers and allows you to
selectively send or receive marked files. If interactive prompting is enabled,
a prompt window appears before each marked file is transferred or deleted.

When Interactive Promting is enabled and a file transfer action is choose the
prompting window allows you to specify a different target file name by typing
over the default file name in the entry field.

If enabled, interactive prompting occurs during multiple file deletions. The
Delete Prompt window allows you to individually confirm each marked file
deletion.

Select Interactive Prompting to toggle the interactive prompting feature. A
check mark appears to the left of Interactive Prompting if it is enabled. The
setting you select is saved after each session.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Help for Unique Local File Names ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The Assign Unique Local File Names option toggles the creation of unique file
names for local destination files during "Get Marked Remote Files" operations.

If the name of the file received is the same as a file that already exists on
your host, your existing file is overwritten by the incoming file, unless this
toggle is enabled. If it is enabled, a unique file name is created for the
incoming file and your existing file is unchanged.

Use the Assign Unique Local File Names option to to toggle the Unique Local
File Names option. A check mark appears to the left of Assign Unique Local File
Names when it is enabled.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Help for Unique Remote File Names ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The Assign Unique Remote File Names option toggles the creation of unique file
names for foreign destination files during "Put Local Files" operations.

If the name of the file being sent is the same as a file that already exists on
the destination host, the existing file is overwritten by the transferred file,
unless this toggle is enabled. If it is enabled, a unique file name is created
for the transferred file and your existing file is unchanged.

Use the Assign Unique Remote File Names option to toggle the Unique Remote File
Names option. A check mark appears to the left of Assign Unique Remote File
Names


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. Help for Two Part File Name Option ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Some FTP servers provide file and directory listings in which the file names
are displayed with blank spaces separating the file name and the file
extension. When marking files displayed with blank spaces, you must mark both
parts of the file name.

The Two Part File Names option facilitates marking files displayed with blank
spaces. If this option is set, both parts of the file name can be marked by
selecting only once on the left part of the file name.

To unmark a marked file, simply click on the right button anywhere on the line
of the marked file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 19. Help for Free Form File Name Option ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Some FTP servers provide file and directory listings in which the file names
are displayed in a manner which makes it difficult for FTPPM to identify.  Free
form file marking allows you to mark the file as any set of contiguous
characters.

To unmark a marked file, simply click on the right button anywhere on the line
of the marked file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 20. Help for Actions ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

 Use the Actions pull-down choices to to send, receive, and delete marked
files, make directories, and rename files on your PC and on the remote host.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 21. Help for Put Local Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Put Local Files sends all marked local files to the current remote host.

If a directory from the directory list is marked, all files in that directory
are also sent to the current working directory of the remote host. (A new
remote subdirectory is not created.)  Files in subdirectories of the marked
directory are not transferred.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Help for Get Remote Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Get Remote Files sends all marked remote files and directories from the current
remote host to your PC.

If a directory from the files and directory list is marked, all files in that
directory are also sent to the working directory on your PC. (A new local
subdirectory is not created.) Files in subdirectories of the marked directory
are not transferred.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 23. Help for Send Files Between Remote Hosts ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Send Files Between Remote Remote Hosts to send files from the current
host to another remote host.

The Current Hosts window displays a list of all the remote hosts to which you
are currently connected.

Use the arrow keys or the mouse to position the cursor to select the remote
host to which you want to transfer the marked files.

Use the mouse or the tab keys to move to the following buttons at the bottom of
the screen:

 Button    Description

 OK        The remote host you selected becomes the destination host for the
           marked files and the transfers begin.

 Cancel    Cancels the transfer and returns to FTPPM window.

 All marked remote files are sent to the target remote host.

 If a directory from the files and directory list is marked, all files in that
 directory are also sent to the working directory on your PC. (A new local
 subdirectory is not created.)  Files in subdirectories of the marked directory
 are not transferred.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 24. Help for Delete Local Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Delete Local Files deletes all marked local file. If interactive prompting is
enabled, you are asked to confirm the deletion of each file.

If a directory from the directory list is marked, the directory is removed only
if it is empty. If files remain in the directory, an error message results.

Make Local Directory displays the New Local Directory window. Enter a name for
a new local directory.

Use the mouse or the tab keys to move to the following buttons at the bottom of
the screen:

 Button    Description

 OK        Proceeds to create the directory.

 Cancel    Cancels the creation of a new directory on your PC and redisplays
           the FTPPM window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 27. Renaming Local File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Rename Local File displays the Rename Local File window.  Enter the old name
and the new name of the file in the entry fields.

Use the mouse or the tab keys to move to the following buttons at the bottom of
the screen:

 Button    Description
 OK        Attempts to rename the file.
 Cancel    Cancels the operation.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 28. Help for Make Remote Directory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Make Remote Directory displays the New Remote Directory window Enter a name for
a new remote directory.

Use the mouse or the tab keys to move to the following buttons at the bottom of
the screen:

 Button    Description

 OK        Attempts to add the foreign directory. If you do not have the
           correct authorization, an error message results.

 Cancel    Cancels the creation of a new directory on the remote host and
           redisplays the FTPPM window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 29. Help for Rename Remote File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Rename Remote File displays the Rename Remote File window.  Enter the old name
and the new name of the file in the entry fields.

Use the mouse or the tab keys to move to the following buttons at the bottom of
the Rename Remote File window.

 OK        Attempts to rename the file.
 Cancel    Cancels the operation.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 30. Help for Update ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Selecting Update causes the local and remote hosts' files and directories list
to be redisplayed on the screen. You can see any changes to either the local or
the remote host's directories since the last update.

File and directory lists are also automatically updated after any transfer or
deletion action occurs.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 31. Help for Transferring Files Using QuickTrans ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Selecting QuickTrans causes all marked local files to be transferred to the
current remote host and all marked remote files to be transferred to your PC.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 32. Help for Ending the FTPPM Session ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

To end the FTPPM session, select Exit or press the F3 key.

You will be prompted to confirm that you want exit.  By checking the box
labeled "Save Settings?" in the Exit Window you can save the Transfer Type,
Interactive Prompting, Unique File Name, and Two Part File Name option settings
for your next session.
