PSF/2 README
____________
The information in this file provides instructions for installing this
service update on PSF/2 server and requestor machines.
This service update must be installed after PSF/2 is installed on the LAN
server. First install the service update on the PSF/2 print server; then
install it on each PSF/2 requester. Use the instructions below for both IBM
LAN and NetWare requesters.
NOTE: If PSF/2 is reinstalled, this service update must be reinstalled on
the PSF/2 print server, and then reinstalled on each PSF/2 requester.
INSTALLING THE PSF/2 UPDATE ON SERVERS
______________________________________
Read all of the information in this file. Then follow these steps:
NOTE: Because of improvements in our Corrective Service Update installation
procedure, you no longer need to delete all your printer device profiles and
restore them after installation. However, if you want to use the new form
definitions for HP-PCL printers that are shipped with this update, you need
to make some additional changes. For more information, see "Improving HP-PCL
printer output."
1. Select the PSF/2 Control Panel and print backup copies of your device
profiles by selecting SUMMARY from the Profile menu and selecting PRINT.
2. If this is the first service update you have installed, delete all
printer objects by following these steps:
a. Access the pop-up menu associated with each OS/2 printer object by
selecting the object and clicking with the right mouse button.
b. Select DELETE.
3. Shut down OS/2 and then restart the system.
4. Close or exit any PSF/2 programs that are running. If these programs are
running, service cannot be applied to them.
5. Place the service diskette in drive A.
6. From an OS/2 window or full screen, enter a: to make drive A the current
drive.
7. Enter UPDATE.
8. After the update diskettes have installed, shut down OS/2 and then
restart the system.
9. If necessary, recreate all of the printer objects that you deleted by:
a. Selecting SETUP QUEUES from the Options menu. You see the Setup
queues window.
b. Enter all applicable information in this window. Press F1 if you
need help.
c. Select SETUP to create a new queue and a new printer object.
NOTE: When you bring up the PSF/2 Control Panel for the first time,
press Enter if you see messages with information like this:
Printer XXX defined in Print Manager will be replaced
or deleted in OS/2 Print Manager.
INSTALLING THE PSF/2 UPDATE ON REQUESTERS
_________________________________________
To install the PSF/2 update on requesters, follow these steps:
1. If this is the first service update you have installed, delete all LAN
printer objects by following these steps:
a. Access the pop-up menu associated with each PSF/2 printer object by
selecting the object and clicking with the right mouse button.
b. Select DELETE.
2. Shut down OS/2 and then restart the system.
3. Close or exit any PSF/2 programs that are running. If these programs are
running, service cannot be applied to them.
4. Start an OS/2 full screen or OS/2 window session.
5. LOGON to the network.
6. Access the network drive that contains \PSF2\BINSHARE.
7. Enter the following to install PSF/2 requester support:
x&colon.install
where x: is the network drive containing \PFS2\BINSHARE
8. Select INSTALL from the Options menu. At the Select Installation Type
window, select REQUESTER.
You see the "Select requester source and destination" window.
9. Verify that the source path is correct. If necessary, change the desti-
nation path. If desired, change the CONFIG.SYS backup file name.
You will see informational windows and a progress indicator bar while the
CONFIG.SYS file and the system files are updated.
10. After the installation is complete, shutdown OS/2 and then restart it.
The device drivers will be loaded.
11. If necessary, recreate the printer objects you deleted by following
the procedures in the PSF/2 installation cookbook for your system
environment. Refer to these sections:
- For OS/2 LAN clients, "Accessing a PSF/2 printer for an OS/2
client"
- For Novell LAN clients, "Setting up the OS/2 network print
queues"
IMPROVING HP-PCL PRINTER OUTPUT
_______________________________
You can use the form definitions shipped with this Corrective Service Update
for enhanced HP-PCL printer support.
FOR HP-PCL4 PRINTERS: The HP-PCL4 form definitions combine with new device
profile defaults to improve the placement of data on the page within the
printable area. To take advantage of this new function, you need to delete
and recreate the profiles for HP-PCL4 printers. Follow these steps for each
HP-PCL4 device:
1. Select the PSF/2 Control Panel and print backup copies of your HP-PCL4
device profiles by selecting SUMMARY from the Profile menu and selecting
PRINT.
2. From the PSF/2 Control Panel, delete all HP-PCL4 devices by selecting the
device and selecting DELETE from the Profile menu.
3. Recreate all of the devices that you just deleted by:
a. Selecting NEW from the Profile menu. You see the New device window.
b. Enter all applicable information in this window. Press F1 if you
need help.
c. Select CREATE to create the new device.
d. Select CHANGE from the Profile menu. You see a list of profile
options you can change.
e. Make any changes that you need to set up the new device profile. For
example, you may need to set up a PostScript transform if you want to
print PostScript input data.
NOTE: You can use the backup copies of the device profile information
you printed in step 1 to recreate your device profiles.
FOR HP-PCL5 AND HP-PCL5C PRINTERS: The HP-PCL5 form definitions also improve
the placement of data on the page within the printable area. To use these
form definitions, you need to change the form-definition default. Follow
these steps for each HP-PCL5 or HP-PCL5C device:
1. From the PSF/2 Control Panel, select the device to change.
2. Select the PROFILE menu option.
3. Select the CHANGE pull-down option.
4. Select DEVICE OPTIONS.
5. Select SETTINGS.
6. Change the FORM DEFINITION to one of the form definitions below that are
shipped with this Corrective Service Update:
F1H50110: bin-1, simplex
F1H50111: bin-1, duplex (this is the new default for PCL5)
F1H50120: bin-2, simplex
F1H50121: bin-2, duplex
CORRECTING PROBLEMS WITH MESSAGE PRINTOUT
_________________________________________
If you are having problems reading the message printout because initial char-
acters are dropped, change the default message page form definition for your
printer. To do this, follow these steps:
1. From the PSF/2 Control Panel, select the device to change.
2. Select the PROFILE menu option.
3. Select the CHANGE pull-down option.
4. Select DEFAULT OPTIONS.
5. Change the MESSAGE PAGE FORM DEFINITION to one of the form definitions
below that are shipped with this Corrective Service Update:
F1MG0110: bin-1, simplex (this is the new default for the msg page)
F1MG0111: bin-1, duplex
F1MG0120: bin-2, simplex
F1MG0121: bin-2, duplex
USING THE FAT FILE SYSTEM, NOT HPFS
___________________________________
The FAT file system gives performance advantages and stability advantages
that HPFS does not. When you install OS/2, select the FAT file system, not
HPFS.
REMOVING THE OS/2 LAZY-WRITE PARAMETER
______________________________________
Remove the lazy-write parameter from the DISKCACHE statement in the OS/2
CONFIG.SYS file. If you do not remove this parameter, the OS/2 system files
may be corrupted and you may need to reinstall OS/2.
The lazy-write parameter is in the CONFIG.SYS file by default when you first
install OS/2. To remove it, change the DISKCACHE statement in CONFIG.SYS by
changing:
DISKCACHE=512,LW
To:
DISKCACHE=512
REMOVING THE OLD PSF/2 TECHNICAL REFERENCE ICON
_______________________________________________
After installing this CSD, the old 'PSF/2 Technical Reference' icon in
the PSF/2 Folder will be useless. You can remove it by doing the
following:
- Click on the icon with the right mouse button
- Select Delete
