ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Help for Video IN Recorder ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Video IN Recorder to record high-quality movies for the OS/2 desktop.
You also can edit movies by removing frames, copying frames, and pasting frames
from one movie clip into another.
The recorder provides editing functions that allow you to insert and delete
frames from a newly recorded movie or saved movie file. The files are saved in
the Audio Video Interleaved (AVI) file format. The AVI File Utility provides
functions for splitting the audio track from the AVI file.
The view of the recorder you see differs depending on whether a
computer-controlled device (usually a videodisc player) or a line device, such
as a videotape or camcorder, is connected to your system. With a line device,
you cannot control the source from the device. You can only start and stop the
recording of the signal. With a computer-controlled device, you can manage the
source and the output. The computer-controlled view includes a group of
controls for managing the source that is almost identical to the recording
group. The only difference is that the source group does not have a Record
push button.
Each recorder view includes a set of controls. Select Recorder push buttons
and sliders for a complete description.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Help for Volume ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Volume to raise and lower the audio volume level. Audio volume is
measured in percentages of the highest volume level attainable. Tick marks
divide the slider into 25% intervals, with no sound being the lowest selection
and 100% being the highest. The buttons to the side of the slider move the
slider position in increments of 1% of the medium.
The volume will also affect the audio heard when Monitor Video is selected in
the Options menu. However, when a movie file is loaded into the recording
device, the audio from the video monitoring is disabled so that the audio from
the movie playback can be heard.
Note: The volume is affected by the volume setting in the Volume Control
program window and any volume settings on the media-player device.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Help for Media Slider ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The media slider shows the current position in the medium. Also shows a segment
in the medium that is selected for recording or editing. A position is selected
by pressing the left mouse button while the pointer is anywhere on the slider.
A segment is selected by selecting a position on the slider and holding down
the left mouse button to drag the slider arm to a new position. Highlighting
indicates the selected segment. To change the current position without undoing
a selected segment, move the pointer to the new position and press the right
mouse button.
A box to the right of the slider displays the media position in the currently
selected time format: HH:MM:SS:FF or frames.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 39. Help for Monitor Video ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Monitor video in the Options menu to open and close the Monitor window.
The default is the Monitor window is closed.
Use the Monitor window to view incoming video source. The video source can be
the image from any device that is connected to the line-in jack of the video
capture device, such as a camcorder, videotape, or videodisc device. After the
Monitor window is opened, a check mark appears next to the Monitor video menu
choice. When you are ready to close the Monitor window, select Monitor video
again.
During the audio pass of a frame-step recording, the Monitor window closes
automatically. During the video pass of a frame-step recording, the monitor
window reopens and is sized to the size of the output movie. The Monitor
window cannot be sized or minimized until the video pass is completed.
A digital video file also can be opened as source and displayed in the Monitor
window during a record-from-file operation. The file is opened using the Open
source file choice on the File menu. This source type does not require a video
capture device. The monitor is sized to the size of the source movie. This
monitor cannot be sized or minimized.
Note: If you want to monitor the incoming audio source, you must select
Monitor audio on the Options menu.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 40. Help for Monitor Audio ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Monitor audio in the Options menu to have the audio source piped through
the speaker jack of the audio capture device. After Monitor audio is selected,
a check mark appears next to the menu choice. If Monitor audio is already
selected, selecting it again turns off the audio monitoring function.
You can use the Monitor audio option in conjunction with the Monitor video...
option. You also can use each option separately. Listening to the audio source
provides another way to identify the position in the movie file or videodisc
where you want to start recording.
You probably do not want to monitor the audio source while recording from a
microphone is being done, because audio from the speakers will be fed back into
the microphone.
The default for Monitor audio is the audio is turned off.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 41. Help for Adjust Video ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Adjust video in the Options menu to display the Video Adjustments
window. Use the Video Adjustments window to make changes to the video image.
The window contains dials that are similar to the controls on your TV. After
viewing the image in the Monitor window you can adjust the contrast,
brightness, color, and tint of the image to your liking.
Note: On some video capture cards, the video adjustments will be reflected in
the Monitor window but will not be reflected in recorded movies.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 42. Help for Source/Recording Time Format ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select the Source time format in the Options menu to change the time format on
the video source or Recording time format to change the time on the video
recording device. The HH:MM:SS:FF time format measures file length in hours,
minutes, seconds, and a frames-per-second count. The frames time format
measures file length using a consecutive frame count. The time format can be
changed at any time with no effect on the data.
Note: The begin and end marks and begin and end times of the medium are
changed to reflect the selected format. Whatever format is chosen is
used for entering marks in the Enter Marks window.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 43. Help for Status Line ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Show status line in the Options menu to toggle hiding the status line.
When you use device controls,a status line above the push buttons changes to
give you current information about the device, for example:
o Select a file or device
o Stopped

o Seeking forward
o Stepping forward
o Seeking backward
A check mark next to Show status line indicates that the line will be
displayed. No check mark indicates that the line is hidden from view.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 44. Help for Bit map Capture ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can capture a still image from a movie or from a video capture device. If
a movie is loaded, then the displayed frame will be captured. Otherwise, the
video image displayed in the Monitor Window will be captured. The source of a
video image from a video capture device can be a camcorder, videotape or
videodisc player connected to the video capture device. When capturing a frame
from a movie, a movie must be loaded into the Video Recording device not the
source device. Also, a entire frame will be captured from a frame. A partial
image can be captured from a video capture device by either using the mouse in
the Monitor Window to specify a capture region or by modifying the capture
rectangles specified in the Record Setup window on the Size page. If a
rectangle is specified for capture device and the Monitor Window is on, then
the rectangle will be visible on the Monitor Window.
To capture the still image:
1. Select Options.
2. Select Bit map Capture.
3. Select Capture now.
The Video IN Recorder emits a beep to let you know the image has been captured
and saved in the OS/2 bit map format (24-bit RGB true color).
To select a specific directory that will hold the bit maps you capture:
1. Select Options.
2. Select Bit map Capture.
3. Select Filename selection....
4. Select a directory name in the directory field.
You can create a directory to hold bit maps. You also can modify the file name
to your liking. The directory selection and the file name change are remembered
by the Video IN Recorder.
When the Auto-increment choice is checked, the rightmost numeric field in the
filename.ext is incremented by 1 for each consecutive capture. You can change
the default file name BTMAP000.BMP to any valid 8-character file name and
extension that has a numeric field. The numeric field can be in the file name
or the extension. Suppose the file name has more than one numeric field, for
example:
MMPM2IT0.BMP
The rightmost field (the zero in the example) is incremented. The size of the
numeric field in the file name can range from 1 to 8 characters. The file name
is incremented until the limit of the numeric field is reached, after which the
numbering of the numeric field starts again with zero. For example, if you
change the default file name to PICT000.BMP, consecutive file names are
incremented until PICT999.BMP is reached. After PICT999.BMP is captured,
numbering of the file names starts again with PICT000.BMP. When an incremented
file name will cause the overwriting of an existing file, you are asked if you
want to overwrite the file, type a new file name, or discard the captured bit
map.
You can select a specific portion of the image for capture by drawing a marquee
rectangle directly on the source image.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 45. Help for Adjust Audio Synchronization ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Adjust Audio Synchronization from the Options menu to modify the audio
synchronization for the movie loaded into the Recording Device.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 46. Help for Audio Synchronization Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Sometimes recording produces a movie file in which the audio or video are not
in sync. The Adjust Audio Synchronization window allows you to fix a
synchronization problem by shifting the audio data further ahead in the file so
it starts sooner, or further behind so it starts later, depending on what is
needed.
To fix an audio synchronization problem:
1. Adjust the slider. The default setting on the slider is 0, which indicates
no adjustment to the audio.
o Move the slider to the right to move the audio later in the movie. (The
text Later is highlighted.)
o Move the slider to the left to move the audio earlier in the movie. (The
text Sooner is highlighted.)
2. The change is reflected in the movie when it is played back. To make this
change permanent, save the file using Save or Save As from the File menu.
The range of audio is 1000 milliseconds (1 second) sooner or later. If more
than 1 second must be changed, make the change to the 1000 milliseconds. Apply
the synchronization changes to the movie by saving the movie. Repeat the
process until the movie is synchronized correctly with the audio.
Note: The changes will not be saved in the profile, and will also be reset
when another file is loaded or the current file is unloaded.

Select Seek Forward again to seek to the end of the medium.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 50. Help for Recording ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Recording choice in the Control menu to control the video recording
device using menu choices rather than using the push buttons in the Video IN
Recorder Window.
The controls are the same as the Source menu choices with the following
additional choices:
Record
Captures the source into a temporary file. If a movie file was loaded
before recording began, recording replaces its contents, starting
from the current position. If the length of the recording exceeds the
length of the movie file, the length of the movie file is extended.
Cue for Record
Sets up the medium for recording and puts the recording device in a
Recording, Paused state. When Cue for Record is selected, recording
can begin almost immediately when Record is selected. When Cue for
record is not set, it can take several seconds for recording to
start.
While Cue for Record is set, you cannot use a marquee rectangle to
select an image within the Monitor window. To leave the Recording,
Paused state, select Cue for Record again. If a file is loaded with
unsaved changes, you are prompted to save the file, and the video
recording device is placed in a Record Ready state.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 77. Frame Rates ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The source frame rate setting affects the speed of the source video object only
when it is an external computer-controlled video device supported by the
recorder, for example, Pioneer** Videodisc. There are two standard frame rates
you can choose:
o 30 frames per second
o 25 frames per second
If the source video object is a file, the source frame rate field contains the
frame rate set when the file was recorded and cannot be changed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 78. Reference Frames ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Rather than storing all the frames in a video as complete frames, the recorder
creates complete frames only at periodic intervals. These frames are called
reference frames. Frames in between the reference frames are called delta
frames. Delta frames store only the changes from one frame to the next.
A good choice for the reference frame interval is a value that is twice the
output frame rate. This will ensure that a reference frame is included every
two seconds in the output stream. For example, if you select 15 as the output
frame rate, select a reference frame interval of 30.
When no reference frames are created or a long interval is specified between
reference frames, editing and seeking operations are severely constrained. In
order to perform an editing or seeking operation, the image must be
decompressed from the preceding reference frame to ensure a complete image.
When no reference frames are included, the media is decompressed from the
beginning.
These settings also can have adverse affects on the video quality during
playback. A long reference frame interval can cause clusters of delta frames to
be dropped when speed-up corrections need to be made to resynchronize the video
to the next reference frame. This results in a loss of smoothness.
A short reference frame interval reduces the compression obtainable, and in the
case of Ultimotion* Real-Time compression, also can result in a loss of
quality.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 79. Help for Size Setup ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Size page in the Record Setup notebook to specify a capture position
and size and the output size (resolution) of the movie file. The default
capture size is the entire video image. Output sizes are dependent on the
capture size and the video capture device.
In the Real Time recording profile, the zoom ratio between the maximum capture
size and the default output movie size is 4:1. In the Frame Step recording
profile, the zoom ratio between the maximum capture size and the default output
movie size is 2:1.
Capture position
Sets pixel values for the X and Y coordinates of the capture origin.
The default is 0,0, which corresponds to the lower-left corner of the
video image.
Capture size
Sets pixel values for the X and Y coordinates that indicate the width
and height of the capture.
Output video size
Sets the output size. For an output size value to be set, it must be
displayed in the spin button window when you close the notebook. The
default output size is the maximum size (entire image).
Related Information:

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 80. Capture Size Values ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Specify a smaller capture size than the maximum capture size when you want to
crop unwanted areas from the source image. For example, you might want to crop
the source image of a wide screen movie on videodisc that has broad black bands
at the top and bottom of the source image. In addition to specifying a capture
size using the Size page, you can draw a marquee rectangle directly on the
source image in the Monitor window.
If you mark using a marquee rectangle on the Monitor window and then open the
Record Setup notebook to the Size page, X and Y coordinates for position and
size reflect the size shown in the Monitor window. If you mark another
rectangle on the Monitor window while the Record Setup notebook is open, the
new size is not reflected in the notebook. Instead a message is displayed that
informs you of the mismatch and asks you to select which of the settings you
want to use for the capture size.
Related Information:
o Marquee selection technique
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 81. Output Size Values ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Output size values are derived from integer scalings of the capture size. For
example, if you type in a 640 x 480 capture size, the spin button shows output
size choices of 640 x 480, 320 x 240, 160 x 120, and 80 x 60. When you change
the capture size, the change is reflected in the output sizes shown in the spin
button window. The value shown for the maximum capture size cannot be changed
and depends on the video capture device.
Most video capture devices provide only integer scaling. However, some devices
provide continuous scaling (that is, they can stretch the output rectangle in
either direction). If your device has this capability, you can type a value
that your device allows in the spin button window.
If you make one of the following errors in specifying a value for the capture
size, you get an error message that tells you the value is out of range:
o You enter values for the capture size (horizontal, vertical, or both
dimensions) that exceed the boundaries of the maximum capture size.
o You enter values for the capture position which, when added to the
dimensions, exceed the boundaries of the maximum size.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 82. Help for Quality Setup ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Quality page in the Record Setup notebook to set values that affect
video quality. The items available for selection depend on whether you are
viewing the Real-Time or Frame-Step recording profile.
No compression
Specifies the video is to be recorded uncompressed.
Ultimotion* Asymmetric
Specifies the video is to be recorded asymmetrically. This
compression type supports settings for both video quality and maximum
data rate. In most cases, the asymmetric compressor is used with a
video quality setting of High and a maximum data rate of 150KB per
second for CD-ROM content.
Ultimotion real-time
Specifies the video is to be recorded in real time. This compression
type supports settings only for video quality.
Indeo** compression
Specifies the video is to be recorded in real time. This compression
type supports settings only for video quality.
Desired video quality
This value can be set for all compression types except No
Compression.
Maximum data rate
This value can be set only when the Ultimotion Asymmetric compression
type is selected.
Related Information:
o Maximum data rate
o Compression types
o Default

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 83. Maximum Data Rate ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The maximum data rate is the sum of audio and video data rates. You can select
a value for the audio data rate (sample rate) on the Audio page. The audio
sample rate is subtracted from the value you set for the maximum data rate to
produce a value for the video rate.
During the recording process, attempts are made to provide the selected quality
level without exceeding the maximum data rate. The maximum data rate is the
maximum data rate that the Ultimotion* Asymmetric Compressor will allow. The
actual output data rate might be below the maximum data rate, particularly if a
low-quality video level is set.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 84. Compression Types ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When video is recorded with No Compression, the data rate is determined by the
pixel format, output video frame size, frame rate, and, in the case of
real-time uncompressed recording, the performance level attainable on the
system being used to record.
When video is recorded with Ultimotion Asymmetric, the compressor attempts to
provide the selected quality level without exceeding the maximum video data
rate. If the quality level can be attained at a data rate less than the maximum
video data rate, the data rate drops below the maximum requested. However, if
the quality level cannot be attained within the maximum data rate, the
compressor automatically reduces the quality of the video (without affecting
the desired quality setting) as needed to stay within the maximum data rate
specified.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 85. Help for Audio Type Setup ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Audio Type page in the Record Setup window to select values that affect
audio quality. Selecting a 16-bit sample size or a higher sample rate than the
default can improve audio quality, but a higher audio quality usually means a
lower video quality. Selecting higher quality audio also can limit the output
from being played on a wide range of hardware.
Number of channels
Sets the number of channels the audio will have: one channel (mono),
or two (stereo).
Sample rate
Sets the rate at which audio waveform sampling will occur: 11025,
22500, or 44100 samples per second. The default is 22.50 kHz (music).
Sample size
Sets the sample size: 8-bit or 16-bit. The default is 8-bit (low
quality).
The number of samples per second taken of the original sound wave as well as
the precision (or resolution) of the sample determine the quality of the sound
reproduction. Typical sampling rates are measured in thousands of cycles per
second, or kilohertz (kHz). The sampling precision is usually measured in
bits, where 8 or 16 bits per second are representative of most audio capture
devices.
Note: If there is no audio capture device installed, selections on Audio
Options and Audio Type pages are unavailable.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 86. Help for Audio Options Setup ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Audio Options page in the Record Setup notebook to select values that
affect audio input.
Gain
Sets the level of output signal amplification. The default is Medium.
Choosing High increases the signal amplification, and choosing Low
lowers it.
Audio compression type
Sets the type of audio support for your movie.
o If you select Record no audio, your video is recorded without sound.
o If you select Record compressed audio, the audio is recorded and then
compressed as it is interleaved with the video. Recording with audio
compression makes the size of the movie smaller and is useful when you are
concerned about saving disk space. Movies recorded with compressed audio
can be played back only on systems with OS/2 Version 3 multimedia support.
o If you select Record uncompressed audio, the audio is recorded and
interleaved as it was recorded.
Record from
Sets the audio input source. The default is Line-in. Select
Microphone when you are using a camcorder to record live, or when you
want to record the audio live while recording the video from a
videodisc or videotape source.
You can check Record no audio to record video without audio. If you want to
create the audio separately, you can merge the video-only file with a waveform
audio file, using the AVI File Utility. You cannot merge a waveform file with
an AVI video that already has an audio track. However, you can use the AVI
File Utility to split the audio track from the movie file.
Most audio capture devices have two input jacks: line-in and microphone, which
means you can connect both a microphone and the audio output from a line
device, such as a videodisc player.

tint of the image to your liking. The Monitor window will reflect the video
adjustments.
To display the Video Adjustments window, you must be viewing the output from a
video source device. The window is not available when the source video object
is a file. Following are descriptions of video adjustments:
Contrast
The difference in brightness or color between a display image and the
area in which it is displayed. A contrast level of 0 is minimum
difference. A contrast level of 100 is maximum difference.
Brightness
Refers to the level of luminosity of the video signal. A brightness
level of 0 produces a dark black image. A brightness level of 100
produces a bright image.
Color
Refers to the depth of color intensity. A color level of 0 is no
color (greyscale). A color level of 100 is maximum color intensity.
(Also referred to as saturation.)
Tint
Describes the position of a color in a range from red to green. A
tint level of 0 is maximum red. A tint level of 100 is maximum green.
(Also referred to as hue.)
Note: Some video capture devices do not support all of the adjustments, such
as contrast. If the adjustment is unsupported, it is disabled. Refer
to the README file for more information about your video capture
device.

the controls from left to right:
Begin Mark
Marks the current position as the beginning of a video segment to be
edited or recorded. When Begin Mark is pressed, the Begin Mark value
appears below the Begin Mark button.
Media Slider
Shows the current position in the medium. Also shows a segment in the
medium that is selected for recording or editing. A position is
selected by pressing the left mouse button while the pointer is
anywhere on the slider. A segment is selected by selecting a position
on the slider and holding down the left mouse button to drag the
slider arm to a new position. Highlighting indicates the selected
segment. To change the current position without undoing a selected
segment, move the pointer to the new position and press the right
mouse button.
End Mark
Marks the current position as the end of a video segment to be edited
or recorded. When End Mark is pressed, the End Mark value appears
below the End Mark button.
Scan Backward
Plays the medium backward from the current position at high speed
without audio. The medium is played until the beginning of a selected
segment or the beginning of the medium is reached.
Stop
Stops playing, recording, scanning, seeking, or stepping.

appropriate button: Play, Scan Forward or Scan Backward.
Step Forward
Seeks to the next frame and displays it. Holding down the Step
Forward button scans a videodisc slowly forward.
Seek Backward
Seeks to the beginning of the medium. If the current position is
within a selected segment, the seek is to the beginning of the
selected segment. Select Seek Backward again to seek to the beginning
of the medium.
Seek Forward
Seeks to the end of the medium. If the current position is within a
selected segment, the seek is to the end of the selected segment.
Select Seek Forward again to seek to the end of the medium.
Record
Captures the source into a temporary file. If a movie file was loaded
before recording began, recording replaces its contents, starting
from the current position. If the length of the recording exceeds the
length of the movie file, the length of the movie file is extended.
Volume Slider
Raises and lowers the audio volume level. Audio volume is measured in
percentages of the highest volume level attainable. Tick marks divide
the slider into 25% intervals, with no sound being the lowest
selection and 100% being the highest. The buttons to the side of the
slider move the slider position in increments of 1% of the medium.
Mute
Toggles the volume off and on. The Mute button affects both the
source and recording devices. If the volume is muted during a
recording or playing operation, the operation is suspended.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 146. Selecting the Default Recording Profile ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The recorder maintains two recording profiles; one for real-time recording and
one for frame-step recording. Having separate profiles enables you to switch to
the appropriate profile when necessary, depending on the source you are using
for recording.
o If you are recording from a line device, such as a camcorder, VCR, or
videodisc player, select the real-time recording profile.
o If you are recording from a computer controlled-device, usually a videodisc
player, select the frame-step recording profile.
o If you are recording from an AVI digital video file, select the frame-step
recording profile.
The default real-time and frame-step recording profiles are sufficient for most
purposes, and using them will make learning to use the recorder easier. After
you are comfortable with the default settings, you might want to customize the
profiles.
To select a default recording profile:
1. Select Options.
2. Select Record Setup.
3. Select Real Time or Frame Step.
After you make a selection, the Record Setup notebook opens to display the
appropriate profile and selects the profile for recording. If you decide you do
not want to use the profile for recording, uncheck Use this profile for
recording?, which is the first item on the first page, and close the notebook.
Of the two profiles, the real-time profile is selected by default.

Digital video playback is accomplished using Software Motion Video (SMV), which
eliminates the need for video decompression hardware. SMV takes advantage of
OS/2 video enhancements, which have restrictions, given certain conditions.
Degradation of video playback can occur under the following conditions:
o The video window is too large for the speed of the processor.
o OS/2 video enhancements are not in the display driver being used.
o The screen is in 16-color VGA mode.
o A system with an SX processor, 16MB of memory, and an XGA adapter is being
used.
In the case of the system with an SX processor and 16MB of memory, removing a
megabyte or more of memory should help the performance of the XGA adapter. In
some systems with SX processors and XGA-2 adapters, the adapters might not be
configured correctly. In these systems, XGA-2 adapters require enabling of the
1 MB VRAM Aperture Base Address.
