  3.                IBM1S506 Driver - Installation Notes
  4.                ------------------------------------

  6.   Note: The driver in this package is a slightly newer version
  7.         than the driver shipped in the OS/2 2.1 Beta release.
  8.  
  9.         For previous OS/2 2.0 releases this driver should be
  10.         considered a replacement for previously released versions.
  11.  
  12.   Changes since previous version:

  15.   1.) Fixed boot problems when a configuration has a combination
  16.       of drives with <8 heads and >8 heads.
  17.  
  18.       Note: This problem IS FIXED in the OS/2 2.1 Beta.
  19.  
  20.   2.) Addressed compatibility problems with certain ESDI controllers.
  21.  
  22.       ESDI drives formatted with 'Sector Sparing' will require
  23.       setting the (/!R) switch on the BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD statement
  24.       in CONFIG.SYS. See IBM1S506.TXT for additional information.
  25.  
  26.       Note: This problem IS NOT FIXED in the OS/2 2.1 Beta and
  27.             will require use of the driver in package.

  29.   Problems this driver addresses:
  30.   -------------------------------

  32.   1.) Compatibility problems with MFM/RLL controllers requiring
  33.       usage of the Generic Int 13 driver as a workaround.
  34.  
  35.   2.) Compatibility problems with some IDE disks.
  36.  
  37.   3.) Compatibility problems with the OAK Technology chip set when
  38.       an IDE Paddle card is installed.
  39.  
  40.   4.) Compatibility problems with some laptop IDE drives (2.5" inch)
  41.       requiring excessive spin-up times.
  42.  
  43.   5.) Support of large IDE drives (>0.5 GB).
  44.  
  45.   6.) Support of large ESDI drives (>0.5 GB) without requiring
  46.       Head/Track Mapping modes.
  47.  
  48.   7.) Support of MFM/RLL drives with >1024 addressable cylinders on
  49.       some MFM/RLL controllers.
  50.  
  51.   8.) Support of a second IDE/ESDI controller.
  52.  
  53.       Used in laptop docking station applications or in small server
  54.       (non-SCSI) applications.

  57.   Problems this driver DOES NOT address:

  60.   1.) Problems with Quantum Hardcards.
  61.  
  62.       Some Hardcard models require a loadable DOS driver to operate. Quantum
  63.       is reportedly working on a (.ADD) driver compatible with OS/2 2.0.
  64.  
  65.       Hardcard owners should contact Quantum Corp directly concerning
  66.       availability of this driver.

  69.   2.) Compatibility problems with 8-Bit MFM/RLL controllers.
  70.  
  71.       Controllers such as ST-11M,R do not conform to PC-AT (ST-506)
  72.       register interfaces and are not supported by this driver.
  73.  
  74.       Support may be provided by the Generic Int 13 driver. However
  75.       use of these controllers is not recommended with OS/2 2.0.

  80.   Installation Instructions

  85.         to a directory and are currently in that directory.

  91.   On a system that has been previously installed. The driver
  92.   should replace the existing IBM1S506 driver.

  94.   For example:

  96.       (OS/2 Installed on D:)

  98.       ren D:\OS2\IBM1S506.ADD *.AD0
  99.       copy IBM1S506.ADD D:\OS2

  101.   Modify the existing IBM1S506 BASEDEV stmt in CONFIG.SYS as follows:

  103.       BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /v
  104.  
  105.   Shutdown and reboot the system.

  108.   Diskette Install

  111.   Note: Remember to make back-up copies of any diskettes prior
  112.         to modifying them!

  114.         Also, you are replacing files already on the diskettes.
  115.         If you do not see the files you are replacing currently
  116.         on the diskette, then you are updating the wrong diskette!
