  1. This package contains a complete replacement for the SOM.DLL                    
  2. file provided with the OS/2 2.0 GA product.  The new version of                 
  3. SOM.DLL contains changes to the dynamic class loading/unloading                 
  4. mechanism that have been found to provide better synergy with the               
  5. Workplace Shell APIs for class registration.  If you have noticed               
  6. problems unloading and then reloading the DLL(s) for classes you                
  7. have written, this version may provide better results.                          
  8.                                                                                 
  9. In order to replace the system-supplied version of SOM.DLL,                     
  10. download SOM DLLBIN (in BINARY mode!!!) to a temporary directory                
  11. as SOM.DLL.  Then boot OS/2 from the install diskette, insert                   
  12. diskette 1 when prompted, hit escape when the first install panel               
  13. appears to go to an OS/2 command prompt.  From the OS/2 command                 
  14. line, rename /OS2/DLL/SOM.DLL to /OS2/DLL/SOMDLL.BAK, then                      
  15. copy the newly downloaded SOM.DLL into /OS2/DLL.  (Note: the                    
  16. character "/" actually represents an OS/2 backslash.)  Reboot OS/2              
  17. to load and use the replacement DLL.  If you find that the                      
  18. workplace shell will no longer start-up, you have probably not                  
  19. downloaded SOM DLLBIN properly.  It must be downloaded as a BINARY              
  20. file, with no EBCDIC to ASCII translation.  In this case, restore               
  21. the original SOM.DLL from your backup copy (SOMDLL.BAK) above, and              
  22. download SOM DLLBIN correctly.  (You can verify that you have downloaded        
  23. correctly using the CRC PACKAGE on PCTOOLS to match the CRC values              
  24. with those shown in the SOMFIX PACKAGE file).

  26. The file SOM SYMBIN is a replacement for the SOM.SYM file provided              
  27. with the Kernel debugger diskettes that are included with the                   
  28. OS/2 2.0 Toolkit product.  If you are not using the Kernel debugger,            
  29. you can just ignore this file.
