  10. INSTALLF.EXE --
  11.  
  12. Please read the following information about the fix installation program BEFORE
  13. you attempt to install the fixes provided. The ABSTRACT explains how the fixes
  14. are applied to your system, and how they are managed so that additional fixes
  15. can be applied in the future. Following the ABSTRACT are the installation
  16. instructions, complete with examples of how to invoke the installation program.
  17. Following the installation instructions are the descriptions of the fixes you
  18. have received and the OS/2 system module being fixed.

  20. ABSTRACT:

  23. The fix diskette you received contains the following files:
  24.  
  25. INSTALLF.EXE -- the fix installation program.
  26.  
  27. MODULE.LOG   -- input file that tells the installation program which OS/2 system
  28.                 modules are being fixed, the file containing the fix for each
  29.                 module, and the location of the modules following an OS/2 2.1
  30.                 installation.
  31.  
  32. *.*          -- the replacement modules each file being fixed.
  33.                 
  34. DISCLAIMER -- 
  35.  
  36. This fix will only be supported until the release of the service pack for OS/2 2.1.
  37. At that time, to receive continued support you should obtain that service pack.

  40. **** NOTE 1 ********************************************************************
  41.  
  42. Presently Backout is not supported in INSTALLF.EXE. If you have a need to return
  43. your system to a previous fix level, you will be required to copy the original
  44. OS/2 2.1 GA level module from the \ARCHIVE directory into the directory where
  45. the corresponding system module exists. If you wish to re-install the fix then     
  46. you will have to manually copy the module back, because your log file will 
  47. indicate that the fix is already installed.

  49. **** NOTE 2 ********************************************************************
  50.  
  51. INSTALLF.EXE maintains a record of all fixes applied to your system in the log
  52. file LOGU001.OS2. This log file is maintained on the same drive where you have
  53. OS/2 2.1 installed, and in the directory \OS2\INSTALL. Another parameter you
  54. specify when invoking INSTALLF.EXE is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed. For
  55. example, if OS/2 2.1 is installed on the C: drive, the log file would be
  56. maintained in C:\OS2\INSTALL.
  57.  
  58. IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY that you maintain the location of the 2 items just
  59. described to you: 1.) the archived OS/2 2.1 GA-level system modules, 2.) the
  60. , and 2.) the log file LOGU001.OS2. The archived system
  61. modules and the log file are REQUIRED each time you want to apply fixes to your
  62. system. If you specified the disk drive on which you want to store the system
  63. modules, DO NOT delete the directory \ARCHIVE, AND, DO NOT delete the directory
  64. \OS2\INSTALL where the log file is stored. If you specified a diskette drive on
  65. which you want to store these files, DO NOT erase the contents or lose the
  66. diskettes. If these files are not available, you will have to re-install the
  67. OS/2 2.1 GA-level diskettes if you want to apply new fixes.

  71. KEY PROCEDURES PERFORMED BY INSTALLF.EXE:
  72. -----------------------------------------

  74. 1.) ARCHIVING -- This is the process of storing an OS/2 2.1 GA-level system
  75.                  module in the directory \ARCHIVE on the specified logical
  76.                  drive. If this is the first time you have applied a fix then
  77.          you can return to GA by copying this module back onto your     
  78.              system.     
  79.  
  80. 2.) BACKING-UP -- This is the process of saving cuurent modules that exist from
  81.                   previous fixes in the directory \BACKUP on the specified
  82.                   logical drive. If there is ever a need to return the system 
  83.           to a previous fix level, then you may manualy copy this module
  84.               back on to your system. If you do need these files then you    
  85.                can move them or delete them.

  88. 3.) SERVICE LOGGING -- INSTALLF.EXE maintains a record of all service activity
  89.                        performed on your system in the file LOGU001.OS2.
  90.                        INSTALLF.EXE requires this file to determine if fixes
  91.                        have ever been applied to your system, and if so, where
  92.                        to locate the files that have been stored. If you are
  93.                        installing multiple fixes from a pervasive 'pak',
  94.                        INSTALLF.EXE will record the service information to the
  95.                        temporary file LOGU001.BAK. When all fixes have been
  96.                        applied, LOGU001.BAK will be written to LOGU001.OS2. If
  97.                        you interrupt INSTALLF.EXE while it is applying fixes, do
  98.                        not erase LOGU001.BAK. INSTALLF.EXE needs this file to
  99.                        continue applying fixes when you re-run INSTALLF.EXE.

  103. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
  104. --------------------------

  107. To Install the fix(es), do the following:
  108.  
  109.     1. Boot your system with the OS/2 2.1 Installation Diskette.
  110.  
  111.     2. When prompted, insert Disk 1.
  112.  
  113.     3. When prompted to continue or escape, press the ESC key to get to a
  114.         command prompt. Continue to step 2.
  115.     
  116.     4. INSTALLF A: C: D: 
  117.  
  118.        A:   - drive and path where you are installing the fix from  
  119.        C:   - drive OS/2 is installed on ( usually C: )
  120.        D:   - drive where you are backing up the modules being replaced
  121.        
  122.       More information on INSTALLF:

  126.         where:
  127.  
  128.         source  is the source drive where the files from the fix diskette can be
  129.                 found. INSTALLF.EXE can apply patches from either your disk
  130.                 drive or diskette drive. If you choose to apply the patches from
  131.                 your disk drive, make sure you copy ALL files from the fix
  132.                 diskette to the disk drive. For example, if you copied the files
  133.                 from the fix diskette to C:\FIX, then source would be C:\FIX. If
  134.                 you want to apply fixes from the diskette drive, then source
  135.                 would be A:.
  136.  
  137.           dest  is the drive letter of the system partition where OS/2 2.1 is
  138.                 installed. For example, if OS/2 2.1 is installed on C:, then
  139.                 dest would be C:.
  140.  
  141.      arch-back  is the logical drive where you want the OS/2 2.1 GA level
  142.                 modules that are being patched stored, AND, where patch files
  143.                 from previous fixes are backed-up. The directories \ARCHIVE and
  144.                 \BACKUP will be created. For example, if you want these files
  145.                 stored on your D: drive, then arch-back would be D:. If you want
  146.                 these files stored on a diskette in your A: drive, then
  147.                 arch-back would be A:.
  148.  
  149.     EXAMPLE:  If you choose to install the patches from your A: diskette drive,
  150.               and OS/2 2.1 is installed on C:, and you want \ARCHIVE and \BACKUP
  151.               on your D: drive, then you would enter the following:

  153.                 INSTALLF A: C: D:
  154.

  156. Once INSTALLF.EXE has been started, it is important that you allow it to finish
  157. installing all of the patches that you have received. The message "Fix
  158. successfully installed" will be displayed when the installation is complete. If
  159. this message does not appear, or INSTALLF.EXE ended for some other reason,
  160. please follow the error message and re-run INSTALLF.EXE if necessary.

  165. Additional information:

  167.  The service log maintained in \OS2\INSTALL\LOGU001.OS2 is stored in an
  168.     unreadable format. If there is a service requirement to view the service
  169.     log, you can view the log file by entering the following:
  170.  
  171.       INSTALLF drive
  172.  
  173.         where:
  174.  
  175.          drive  is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed.
  176.  
  177.     EXAMPLE:  If OS/2 2.1 is installed on the C: drive, you would enter the
  178.               following:

  182.     If you would like to print the log file, simply redirect the output of the
  183.     previous command to a print device attached to your system. For example:

  189. We suggest that you store INSTALLF.EXE on your disk drive so that if you ever
  190. need to view the service log, the program is available to do so.
