  27.    SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION
  28.    _______________________

  30.    In certain instances, applying the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200)
  31.    results in overwriting users' current levels of high-resolution or
  32.    color support (greater than 640 x 480 x 16).  The condition occurs if
  33.    you have installed graphics display drivers obtained from sources other
  34.    than the OS/2 2.1 product package.  The OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200)
  35.    replaces display driver files such as, BVHVGA.DLL, BVHSVGA.DLL, VGA.SYS,
  36.    and VSVGA.SYS.  This might leave your high-resolution/color driver
  37.    partially installed.
  38.  
  39.    Use this package if you have installed display drivers from sources
  40.    other than the OS/2 product package and:
  41.  
  42.         - you want to install the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200).
  43.  
  44.                              OR
  45.  
  46.         - you have installed the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) and have
  47.           successfully restarted your system. (Your display driver might
  48.           be partially overwritten.)
  49.  
  50.                               OR
  51.  
  52.         - you have already installed the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200),
  53.           restarted your system, and the display is unreadable.
  54.  
  55.  
  56.    IBM has tested a representative set of graphics display drivers
  57.    supporting a broad range of popular display adapters and hardware
  58.    systems.  The tested systems and graphics adapters are listed in
  59.    this document.  However, the procedures described in this README file
  60.    apply to a broad range of drivers supporting the leading display
  61.    adapters.  If your display adapter is not included on the list of adapters
  62.    tested by IBM, refer to the OS/2 Hardware Compatibility List (PCMTAB.ZIP),
  63.    which is located on the following electronic services:
  64.  
  65.           - CompuServe** (IBM OS/2 Support Forum\Library 17\IBMFiles)
  66.           - IBM National Support Center Bulletin Board System
  67.             (PCCBBS, 919-517-0001).
  68.           - Internal IBM Tools Disk (MKTOOLS as PCMTAB PACKAGE)
  69.           - PRODIGY** (in the IBM Club, file download area)
  70.           - OS2BBS (in the Software D\L area)
  71.           - the anonymous FTP Internet (at software.watson.ibm.com).

  73.    Use the OS/2 Hardware Compatibility List to locate your display adapter
  74.    and chip set. Once you locate the chip set for your adapter, locate the
  75.    chip set that matches it in the list provided in Section 4.  This will
  76.    determine whether you should use the display driver procedures and
  77.    workarounds provided in this document.
  78.  
  79.    The diskette provided in this package contains:
  80.  
  81.          - Updates to the SETVGA command
  82.          - All files necessary to reset the video mode to VGA
  83.          - This README file with all the procedures necessary to reset the
  84.            video mode to VGA and restore high-resolution and color support
  85.            to your system.
  86.  
  87.    The information provided in this document should be used in the
  88.    following order:
  89.  
  90.          1. Install the current IBM VGA driver provided on the Display
  91.             Driver Utilities Update Diskette.  This ensures that you have a
  92.             fully installed display driver.
  93.  
  94.          2. Apply the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) if you have not
  95.             already done so.
  96.  
  97.             If you have installed the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) before
  98.             installing the IBM VGA display driver, you must install the
  99.             IBM VGA driver before you restore your high-resolution and
  100.             color support.
  101.  
  102.          3. Then restore your high-resolution and color support.
  103.  
  104.    NOTES:
  105.  
  106.       o  If you copy the files provided on the diskette that came
  107.          with this package to a location other than a diskette, please be
  108.          sure that you are not using the display driver utilities that were
  109.          originally installed with OS/2 2.1 or from the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak
  110.          (XR06200).
  111.  
  112.       o  DO NOT use Selective Install to reinstall VGA, high-resolution,
  113.          or color support to your OS/2 system unless the display driver
  114.          currently installed on your system was provided with OS/2.
  115.  
  116.       o  The updates provided on the diskette that came with this package,
  117.          can be used from a 1.44 megabyte, 3.5-inch diskette or from your
  118.          hard disk.  If you are using the 5.25-inch diskette package, you
  119.          must follow the steps below to unpack the updates from your
  120.          diskette to your hard disk.
  121.  
  122.             1. Copy the files on the 5.25-inch diskette provided in this
  123.                package to your hard disk.
  124.  
  125.             2. From the directory where the 211DDU.ZIP file is located,
  126.                  Type:
  127.  
  128.                      PKUNZIPF 211DDU  -D
  129.  
  130.                   and press Enter.
  131.  
  132.                 This creates a new directory on your OS/2 partition
  133.                 named \211DDU.
  134.  
  135.              3. Type:
  136.  
  137.                     CD 211DDU

  139.                   and press Enter.

  144.    SECTION 2: SETTING UP VGA MODE
  145.    ______________________________
  146.  
  147.    This section provides two ways for you to install the IBM VGA driver for
  148.    your system.
  149.  
  150.    Use Procedure 1 when you have installed display drivers that were
  151.    obtained from sources other than the OS/2 2.1 product package and:
  152.  
  153.         - you have NOT yet installed the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200)
  154.  
  155.                               OR
  156.  
  157.         - you have installed the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) and have
  158.           successfully restarted your system.  (Your display driver might
  159.           be partially overwritten.)
  160.  
  161.  
  162.    Use Procedure 2 when you have installed display drivers that were
  163.    obtained from sources other than the OS/2 2.1 product package and:
  164.  
  165.         - you have already installed the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200),
  166.           restarted your system, and the display is unreadable.

  173.      1. Open the "OS/2 System" folder.
  174.  
  175.      2. Open "Command Prompts".
  176.  
  177.      3. Open an OS/2 window or OS/2 full-screen session.
  178.  
  179.      4. Insert the the diskette provided in this package into drive A.
  180.  
  181.      5. Type:
  182.  
  183.           A:SETVGA D: A:
  184.  
  185.        (where A: represents the fully qualified path and D: is the drive
  186.         where OS/2 is installed)

  188.         and then press Enter.
  189.  
  190.         Note: If you are using the 5.25-inch package, you must type:

  193.                     (where C: is the partition where you have OS/2
  194.                      installed)

  198.      6. Shut down your system.

  200.      7. Remove the the diskette provided in this package from drive A.

  202.         Your system is now in VGA mode.

  204.    If you have NOT already installed the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200),
  205.    proceed to "Section 3: Applying the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200)."

  207.    If you have previously installed the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200),
  208.    proceed to Section 4 to restore your high-resolution and color support.

  211.    Procedure 2:

  214.    Use the following procedure when you have already installed the OS/2 2.1
  215.    ServicePak (XR06200), restarted your system, and the display is unreadable.
  216.  
  217.      1. Insert the OS/2 Installation Diskette into drive A.
  218.  
  219.      2. Turn on the computer, or restart your system.
  220.  
  221.      3. When prompted, remove the OS/2 Installation diskette, insert
  222.         Diskette 1, and press Enter.
  223.  
  224.      5. When you see the Welcome screen, press Esc to display the OS/2
  225.         command prompt.
  226.  
  227.      6. Remove Diskette 1 and then insert the the diskette provided in this
  228.         package into drive A.
  229.  
  230.      7. Type:
  231.  
  232.            A:SETVGA D: A:
  233.  
  234.        (where A: represents the fully qualified path and D: is the drive
  235.         where OS/2 is installed)
  236.  
  237.         and then press Enter.
  238.  
  239.         Note: If you are using the 5.25-inch package, you must type:

  242.                     (where C: is the partition where you have OS/2
  243.                      installed)

  248.       8. Shut down your system.

  250.       9. Remove the the diskette provided in this package, from drive A,
  251.          and then restart your system.

  253.          Your system is now in VGA mode.

  255.    Proceed to Section 4 to restore your high-resolution and color support.

  261.    SECTION 3: APPLYING THE OS/2 2.1 SERVICEPAK (XR06200)

  264.    If you have not already applied the ServicePak, you can either apply
  265.    service to the OS/2 boot partition only, or you can apply service to all
  266.    the partitions where you have OS/2 installed.
  267.

  269.    Applying Service to the OS/2 Boot Partition Only
  270.    ________________________________________________
  271.  
  272.      1. Restart your system.
  273.  
  274.      2. Open the "OS/2 System" folder.
  275.  
  276.      3. Open "Command Prompts".
  277.  
  278.      4. Open an OS/2 window or OS/2 full-screen session.
  279.  
  280.      5. Insert the ServicePak Installation diskette into drive A.
  281.  
  282.      6. Type:
  283.  
  284.            a:service
  285.  
  286.          and then press Enter.
  287.  
  288.          Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the
  289.          application of service.
  290.  
  291.       After you complete service, you can restore high-resolution and
  292.       color support by using the information in Section 4.
  293.

  295.    Applying Service to All the Partitions Where OS/2 is Installed
  296.    _______________________________________________________________

  298.      1. Insert the ServicePak Installation diskette into drive A, and
  299.         then restart your system.
  300.  
  301.      2. When prompted, remove the ServicePak Installation diskette, insert
  302.         Diskette 2, and press Enter.
  303.  
  304.         Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the
  305.         application of service.
  306.  
  307.       After you complete service, you can restore high-resolution and color
  308.       support by using the information in Section 4.
  309.

  313.    SECTION 4: RESTORING HIGH-RESOLUTION AND COLOR AFTER INSTALLING
  314.               OS/2 2.1 SERVICE PACK (XR06200)
  315.    ______________________________________________________________________

  318.    Install your display driver using the installation procedures
  319.    provided in the README file that comes with the display driver.  Refer
  320.    to the notes following the table for exceptions and workarounds that
  321.    apply to the display driver listed below.
  322.  
  323.  
  324.    NOTE: The version of DSPINSTL included in ServicePak XR06200, does not
  325.          copy older versions of VSVGA.SYS from your display driver to your
  326.          OS/2 system that has been updated with the ServicePak.  The
  327.          display driver will be partially installed and can cause
  328.          unpredictable results.  The workarounds for the ATI** and TSENG**
  329.          display drivers correct this problem.
  330.  
  331.          If you install display drivers other than those that came with the
  332.          OS/2 2.1 product package, files such as BVHVGA.DLL, BVHSVGA.DLL,
  333.          VGA.SYS and VSVGA.SYS might be replaced.  Replacing those files
  334.          removes any updates applied to the files when you installed the
  335.          OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200).

  382.    a. Install the ATI driver by following the instructions provided in the ATI
  383.       README file. Then, from the partition where OS/2 is installed, type:
  384.  
  385.             UNPACK A:ATIM32
  386.  
  387.        (where A: represents the fully qualified path where the ATI driver
  388.         is located)
  389.  
  390.        and press Enter.
  391.  
  392.       This updates three files on your OS/2 system.  Failure to follow
  393.       this procedure might cause problems when you run Windows** and DOS
  394.       applications in a window on the desktop.  This workaround copies the
  395.       VSVGA.SYS file from your display driver diskette to your computer.
  396.  
  397.     Note to users of the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) CD-ROM version.
  398.  
  399.      To reinstall the ATI driver:
  400.  
  401.        1. Stop the ServicePak installation.
  402.        2. Restart your system.
  403.        3. Follow the appropriate procedure to reinstall the VGA driver.
  404.        4. Restore your high-resolution.
  405.  
  406.    b. You can reinstall the S3 16-bit display driver for the 801, 805,
  407.       and 928 chip sets.  There a several versions of OS/2 drivers
  408.       (available on electronic services and from other vendors), supporting
  409.       the 90C801, 90C805, and 90C928 chip sets from the S3 Corporation
  410.       IBM provides service for the S3 32-bit display driver and
  411.       recommends that you install the new version of this driver included
  412.       in ServicePak XR06200.  This 32-bit display driver better
  413.       utilizes the S3 chip sets.
  414.  
  415.       Note: IBM recommends that you DO NOT reinstall the S3-supplied
  416.             16-bit driver, the STB-supplied S3 driver, or the IBM-supplied
  417.             S3-16M driver.
  418.  
  419.       To install the S3 32-bit display driver, follow these steps:
  420.  
  421.         1. Open the "OS/2 System" folder.
  422.  
  423.         2. Open "Command Prompts".
  424.  
  425.         3. Open an OS/2 window or OS/2 full-screen session.
  426.  
  427.         4. Type:
  428.  
  429.               DSPINSTL
  430.  
  431.           and then press Enter.
  432.  
  433.         5. When you see the Display Driver Install window, select "Primary
  434.            Display".
  435.  
  436.         6. Select "OK".
  437.  
  438.         7. When you see the Primary Display Adapter Type window, select
  439.            "32 bit S3 Display Drivers".
  440.  
  441.         8. Follow the instructions for the Monitor Configuration/Selection
  442.            Utility.  For more information on when to use this utility
  443.            to set the refresh rate, see the OS/2 2.1 Installation Guide,
  444.            Appendix A.

  449.      To reinstall the S3 driver:
  450.  
  451.          1. From an OS/2 command prompt, type:
  452.  
  453.              DSPINSTL
  454.  
  455.              and press Enter.
  456.  
  457.          2. Select "Primary Display".
  458.  
  459.          3. Select "OK".
  460.  
  461.          4. Choose the defaults for monitor setting.
  462.  
  463.          5. When the "Directory Screen" is displayed, select "Change".
  464.  
  465.          6. When the directory list is displayed, select the "SP6I617"
  466.             directory.
  467.  
  468.          7. Select "Set".
  469.  
  470.          8. Press Esc to return to the "Directory Screen".
  471.  
  472.          9. Select "Install".
  473.  
  474.    c. You can reinstall the Trident-supplied 16-bit display driver, but
  475.       the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) SVGA 32-bit display driver better
  476.       utilizes the Trident 8900C cards.  IBM provides service for the OS/2
  477.       2.1 ServicePak SVGA 32-bit display driver and recommends that you
  478.       install the new version of this driver.
  479.

  481.       Note: IBM recommends that you DO NOT reinstall the Trident driver
  482.             supplied on numerous bulletin boards, because it removes fixes
  483.             from the Base Video Handler and Virtual Device Driver for the
  484.             OS/2 VGA driver.
  485.  
  486.       To install the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200) SVGA 32-bit display
  487.       driver, follow these steps:
  488.  
  489.         1. Open the "OS/2 System" folder.
  490.  
  491.         2. Open "Command Prompts".
  492.  
  493.         3. Open an OS/2 window or OS/2 full-screen session.
  494.  
  495.         4. Type:
  496.  
  497.               DSPINSTL
  498.  
  499.            and then press Enter.
  500.  
  501.         5. When you see the Display Driver Install window, select "Primary
  502.            Display".
  503.  
  504.         6. Select "OK".
  505.  
  506.         7. When you see the Primary Display Adapter Type window, select
  507.            "Trident 8900C".
  508.  
  509.         8. Follow the instructions for the Monitor Configuration/Selection
  510.            Utility.  For more information on when to use this utility
  511.            to set the refresh rate, see the OS/2 2.1 Installation Guide,
  512.            Appendix A.

  514.    d. After you install the OS/2 2.1 ServicePak (XR06200), install the Weitek
  515.       display driver by following the instructions provided in the Weitek
  516.       README file.  IBM testing indicates that the Weitek display driver runs
  517.       successfully on several computers but encounters "snow" with some
  518.       configurations.

  520.  
  521.    e. TSENG drivers dated prior to 3-23-94 require the following
  522.       workaround.
  523.  
  524.         1. Reinstall the TSENG driver by following the instructions
  525.            located in the README file provided with the TSENG driver.
  526.  
  527.         2. From a command prompt in the partition where OS/2 is installed,
  528.            Type:
  529.  
  530.                 UNPACK A:VSVGA.SY_
  531.  
  532.              and press Enter.
  533.  
  534.              The VSVGA.SYS file is now updated with the correct version of
  535.              the file provided on the TSENG driver diskette.  This
  536.              workaround copies the VSVGA.SYS file from the display driver
  537.              diskette to your computer.
