  1. Late Release Notes for XFree86/OS2 3.3.1
  2. (last updated: 5 Aug 97)

  4. This file contains latest information that did not make it into
  5. the documentation by the time the version 3.3.1 was finalized.

  7. - XFree86-3.3.1 is mainly a bug fix release for 3.3 which should fix about
  8.   140 problems found with the 3.3 version on various platforms. The fixes 
  9.   may or may not have an impact on XFree86/OS2 operation.
  10.  
  11. - Read the XOS2FAQ.HTM file which comes with this distribution.
  12.   This file is HTML code and is best read with a Web reader, e.g. explore
  13.   or netscape. It is located in the \XFree86\lib\X11\doc directory.
  14.  
  15. - A problem has been found shortly before the finalization of XFree86-3.3
  16.   with Matrox and other PCI-based boards supported by the SVGA server.
  17.   If you have such a board, AND have installed certain OS/2 video drivers
  18.   (notorious is the Matrox 2.11 driver obviously for both Millenium and 
  19.   Mystique), the X server will fail to probe the  card correctly, and will 
  20.   fail entirely then. In this case, go through the standard xf86config 
  21.   dialogue and select your card as usual, but then edit the resulting 
  22.   \XFree86\lib\X11\XConfig file with an editor and add the following
  23.   line in the "ServerFlags" section:
  24.     PCIProbe2
  25.   This should fix the problem, and the server will work again.

  27. - The X servers use a new DLL named SHM.DLL which implements experimental
  28.   support for MIT-SHM. This might or might not work yet, but if so there 
  29.   should be a replacement for it in a future fix. If you upgrade from 3.3
  30.   by only updating the X server, get the file 
  31.   ftp://set.gmd.de/pub/misc/XFree86OS2/3.3.1/shm.zip 
  32.   as a stub support, else your server won't run.

  34. - There has been rumor that "the next version" will contain OpenGL support.
  35.   While there might be some XFree86 servers for some platforms which can
  36.   load a special OpenGL runtime module, the XFree86/OS2 servers won't. "The
  37.   next version" again refers to XFree86-4.0, which will deal with such
  38.   a runtime module.

  40. - Xprt, Xnest, and Xvfb are broken in this version, and are not in the
  41.   distribution (X331prt.zip, X331nest.zip, X331vfb.zip) even if some other
  42.   docs claim the converse. These three programs are not too interesting
  43.   anyway, IMHO.

  45. - I've got several reports that FP26 caused problems with XFree86 in 3.2 and
  46.   3.2A (server won't start up, even when no other configuration problem
  47.   exists, or crash intermittingly). Unfortunately, I can't reproduce the
  48.   effect, but you should be warned if you use Warp 3 with FP26. Going back
  49.   to an earlier FP (e.g. 17 or 22) or upgrading to Warp 4 has been reported
  50.   to cure the problem.

  52. - XF86SUP.SYS hasn't been changed since 3.2A, so if you upgrade from the 3.2A
  53.   version, you don't need a reboot.

  55. - As always, there is some goodie hidden in the distributed xinitrc.cmd file
  56.   which is not in the standard XFree86-non-OS/2 distribution. This is usually
  57.   some small, newly ported program. Last time it was some xloadimage program 
  58.   which could display GIF and JPG pictures on the background, this time it is 
  59.   something different. Use the provided xinitrc.cmd file, and watch what 
  60.   happens.

  62. - Reporting bugs:

  64.   There is the official XFree86/OS2 bugs page <http://set.gmd.de/~veit/os2/xf86bugs.html> 
  65.   which is updated when new bugs are found (maybe even together with
  66.   a workaround). Please consult this page before reporting a bug.

  68.   Read the FAQ and ALL OTHER DOCUMENTS that are available before claiming
  69.   something is a bug.

  71.   Older versions, such as 3.2 and 3.2A are no longer supported, once 
  72.   XFree86-3.3.1 is available. XFree86-3.3 has been withdrawn, and you'll
  73.   usually get the reply to try 3.3.1 first before claiming a bug in 3.3.
  74.   I won't react to bug reports that refer to old code (unless you find out 
  75.   that XYZZY worked with an old version of XFree86, and now no longer does).

  79. - Commercial users: there is no warranty, nor do you have any title 
  80.   on getting an immediate fix. Read the file COPYRIGHT for details.

  82. - If you would like to write an article in a newspaper or magazine about this
  83.   system, please feel free to do this (but understand: you get what you
  84.   have paid for - it is usually considered as bad style to bash on software
  85.   which you get for free).
