ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Help for the Setup Program ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Setup program enables you to do the following:
o View the current status of the network printers on your network.
o Add a new network printer to your network.
o Modify the card address of an existing network printer on your network.
o Use locally administered addressing for an existing network printer on your
network.
o Delete a network printer from your network.
o View error log information about your network printers.
The commands on the Setup menu are available only after you select a network
printer from the main window. Initially, the "NEW" printer is selected. Other
printers are selected with the mouse or the TAB and SHIFT+TAB keys.
The main window of the Setup program displays all of the available network
printers configured to work with this server.
New network printers are labeled "NEW", signifying that you must use the Setup
program to configure the network printer. Configured network printers are
displayed with their name and status information.
If no network printers are displayed, it means that the network printer is not
capable of communicating with this server. Make sure the Network Printer
Interface is installed correctly in your printer, the printer is physically
connected to your network, and that the printer is on.
Use the Add command to initially set up a network printer on your network.
After you have set up a network printer, you can use the other Setup commands
to modify or delete the network printer.
Use the Log commands to view the error log information kept by the Setup
program.
Use the Refresh commands to update printer status or set the refresh interval
for status updates.
Use the Help menus to look at how to use help. You can also use help to get
extended help, use the help index, or find out about the keys used in this
program.
If you are having trouble getting your network printer to print, refer to
"Troubleshooting" in the index.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Help for Setup Menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Setup menu is used to:
o Add a network printer
o Delete a network printer
o Modify the card address of an existing network printer on your network
o Use a locally administered address for an existing network printer on your
network
o Exit the Setup program
Before you can use this menu, make sure the Network Printer Interface hardware
is installed in the printer, the printer is physically connected to your
network, and that the printer is on.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Help for Add ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Add a Network Printer dialog box enables you to assign a name, descriptive
statement, card address, and queue to a new network printer.
In addition, this window enables you to select the printer driver or drivers
that you want to assign to the new network printer.
Help for Name
Type in the name you want to give to the network printer. You must type in a
name in this field.
The name can consist of any combination of letters (A-Z) and numbers (0-9).
The name can be up to 6 characters long.
Each printer name must be unique.
Examples:
MKTGLJ
ENGLJ
Help for Description
Type in a description you want to give to the network printer. This field is
optional.
The description can be up to 48 characters long and consist of numbers,
letters, spaces, and punctuation marks (except the semicolon [;]).
Examples:
Located in Marketing department near receptionist pool.
LaserJet printer located on the third floor in Accounting.
Help for Card Address
Select the 12-digit address from the list that corresponds to the Card Address
that is listed on the printer's self test page or status page.
Help for Queue
Select the name of the queue from the list that you want to assign to the
network printer.
If no queues exist, type in the name of the queue that you want Setup to create
for this printer. The name can consist of any combination of letters (A-Z) and
numbers (0-9) and can be up to 8 characters long.
Examples:
PSQueue
PCLQueue
Help for Printer Driver
Select the printer driver you want to assign to the network printer. You can
select more than one printer driver for each network printer.
The last printer driver you select becomes the default driver for the network
printer.
If no printer drivers appear in the window, exit this application and use the
Control Panel Installation menu to add a printer driver. For the LaserJet
IIISi, you need the HPPCL5.HP IIISi driver. For the LaserJet IIID, you need
the HPPCL5.HP IIID driver. For other LaserJets, you need a driver designed for
the particular model of LaserJet you have.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Help for Delete ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Delete a Network Printer dialog box enables you to delete an existing
network printer configuration from your network.
Deleting a configuration is necessary if you have already configured the
printer for this server and now you want to configure the same printer on a
different server. You must delete the printer configuration from this server
before you add the printer configuration to the new server.
Click on OK to delete the network printer. Click on Cancel to keep this network
printer and return to the previous window.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Help for Modify ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Modify a Network Printer dialog box enables you to change the card address
of an existing network printer. This is necessary if the network card in the
printer is replaced.
Select the 12-digit address from the list that corresponds to the Card Address
that is listed on the printer's self test page or status page after the new
network card is installed.
If you want to modify the queue or printer drivers, use Print Manager.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Help for Locally Administered Addressing ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Locally Administered Addressing dialog box enables you to change the card
address of an existing network printer from the universally administered
address (card address shown when adding the printer) to a locally administered
address of your choosing.
The recommended range for locally administered addresses is from 400000000000
to 400079999999 (hexadecimal). The allowable range is from 400000000000 to
4FFFFFFFFFFF (hexadecimal).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Help for Exit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this choice to exit the Setup program.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Help for Log Menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The log menu allows you to access an internal log of printer errors. You can:
o View the log
o Save the log to a file
o Set the level of logging
o Clear the log
The log file is kept in binary form in the HPREDIR.LOG file in the directory
where this software was installed.
The HPREDIR.EXE program writes to the log file when a network printer error
occurs.
The Setup program interprets the log file for you.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Help for View ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this choice to view the log of printer errors.
Each line shown in the view dialog box corresponds to a different error. Each
line has the name of the printer on which the error occurred, the date and time
of the error, an error number, and a description of the error.
Refer to your Network Administrator's Guide for a complete list of all error
messages.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Help for Save As ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this choice to save a copy of the printer error log to a file you specify.
Each line shown in the file corresponds to a different error. Each line has
the name of the printer on which the error occurred, the date and time of the
error, an error number, and a description of the error.
Refer to your Network Administrator's Guide for a complete list of all error
messages.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Help for Level ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this choice to select the level of information about a printer error the
Setup program displays.
Select All if you want the Setup program to display all of the information
available about each printer error.
Select Errors if you want the Setup program to display only information about
each printer error.
Select Warnings if you want information about errors and warnings.
Select None if you do not want the Setup program to display any information
about each printer error.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Help for Clear ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this choice to clear the log file.
All information about previous errors will be lost.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Help for Refresh Menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The refresh menu is used to control how often printer status is updated. You
can:
o Select a one time immediate update of printer status.
o Set the interval (in seconds) for how often the Setup program polls the
network for network printer status.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Help for Refresh Now ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Refresh now causes a one time immediate update of printer status.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Help for Refresh Interval ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Refresh choice sets the interval in seconds for how often the Setup program
will poll the network for network printer status.
Select a high number if you want the Setup program to poll the network
frequently. A high number, however, increases the network traffic and may slow
your network.
Select a low number if you want the Setup program to poll the network
infrequently. If you select a low number, recent changes to your network will
not appear until the Setup program polls the network again.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Help for About ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this choice to get copyright and version information about the Setup
program.
