(C) Copyright IBM Corp. 1992, 1994
TEXTorPS is an application program that can enhance the usability of the OS/2
PostScript Drivers by permitting the user to leave the printer in PostScript
mode and still print text sent to the printer spooler by applications which are
not PostScript aware.
When TEXTorPS is running, PostScript printer jobs are undisturbed, but other
text files are modified by the insertion of a PostScript program to interpret
the job as ASCII text. The user may specify the font, typesize, line spacing,
margins, orientation, page numbers and strings on each page.
The ASCII text mode which is supported is not the full PPDS datastream mode,
and does not support graphics, control characters other than CR/LF and FF, or
the block graphics characters. The National Language Characters of codepage 850
are available as an option.
Starting TEXTorPS
TEXTorPS monitors the default printer queue. Restart Textorps if the default
printer queue is changed. Textorps is not a printer object - don't drag files
to it. When Textorps is running, you may print to the default printer queue in
any of the standard ways. Select 'printer specific' if the spooler asks you
what kind of data you have. The command to start Textorps is
TEXTORPS
Program Parameter can select queue
In addition to the Queue window which can be used to select the monitored
printer queue, an integer parameter can be passed to the program to select the
queue. This is not the LPTn integer. For details, see the Monitored Printer
Queue entry.
Program Parameter can select format
An entire format parameter set can be specified by using the command
TEXTORPS /p-i
where i is an integer 1..4, or S, or actually, any single character. The hyphen
may be replaced by a colon or any other character. For details, see the
Format entry.
The length of time of display of the program logo with the copyright notice is
determined by the System Logo setting on the Logo page of System settings in
the Setup icon in the OS/2 System Folder.
If you want to install TEXTorPS for a printer on a LAN, you must define a
printer using the PostScript Driver set up for an unused LPTn port, in addition
to the LPTm port defined by the NET USE command. For example, suppose you have
issued the command
NET USE LPT3 \\server\queue
to redirect LPT3 to the LAN. Also create a printer object setup to output to
an unused printer port- say LPT2. On the TEXTorPS queue screen, set the
monitored queue (left list box) to LPT2 and set the NET USE Printer Port list
box to LPT3. If you have TCPIP installed, you can use LPRMON to monitor LPT2
and redirect output to the LAN. In that case you don't need LPT3 and would set
the NET USE Printer Port list box to "NO NET USE". You probably want to also
set the LPT2 printer as the default printer.
Output of either text or PostScript may be sent to LPT2. Files dragged to the
Print Manager may be indicated as "printer specific" to obtain the TEXTorPS
formatting. Selecting "plain text" will result in the system Courier
formatting and will continue to work with TEXTorPS installed.

Installing Textorps
In addition to copying Textorps to a directory on the path, or installing it on
the desktop, you may want to consider automatic startup by shadowing TextorPS
to the startup folder. To be able to use the online help information, be sure
to place
set help = d:\path
in config.sys, where
path
contains the directory in which TEXTORPS.HLP is installed.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Format ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Format menu allows rapid switching to one of 5 sets of formating options
specified as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 'Default. Selecting Load 1 is like opening a file
number 1 of parameters. Selecting Save always saves to the open file number-
there's no "Save As". When a parameter set is first used (empty), the Load has
no real effect other than to set the active parameter set name. If you want to
start defining parameter set 2 from default parameters, select Load Default and
then Load 2, for example.
An entire format parameter set can be specified by using the command
TEXTORPS /p-i
where i is an integer 1..4, or S, or actually, any single character. The hyphen
may be replaced by a colon or any other character. If a parameter set was
specified on the command line, it starts as the active parameter set.
The following actions are on the Format sub menu Click on one for more help.
o Load Default which loads the default parameter set.
o Load 1 which loads parameter set 1
o Load 2 which loads parameter set 2
o Load 3 which loads parameter set 3

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.1.1. Paper Size ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this List Box to inform the program of the paper size in your printer. Be
sure to also set the appropriate paper size on your printer front panel;
TEXTorPS does not force the correct size at present for maximum compatibility
with printers. You may specify the 7.25x10.5 inch executive size, the 8.5x11
inch, or 8.5x14 inch sizes, or the 182x257 mm or 210x297 mm sizes, or select
the A4, A5, B5, letter, or legal size names. It is no longer necessary to
specify margins in the same units as the paper size.
This option is on the Margins window.
Press Esc to Close Help Window
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.1.2. Edge Margins ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Specify the Top, Left, Right and Bottom distances between the printed body text
and the paper edges. If landscape orientation is specified, the top margin
is the margin above the printed text body along a long edge of the paper. Any
page numbers or page label strings are printed outside the body of the text
in the margin area.
This option is on the Margins window.
Press Esc to Close Help Window
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.1.3. Landscape Orientation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select this option to rotate printing by 90 degrees. In landscape mode on 8.5
by 11 paper with half inch margins, for example, the lines are 10 inches long
and there are fewer lines than in portrait mode (the default, non-landscape
mode).
This option is on the Margins window.
Press Esc to Close Help Window
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.1.4. Folio Mode ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select this option if the ultimate document will be copied to both sides of
each sheet and you wish the margins to be reflected for even numbered
pages. For example, to permit binding, you might want large left margins on
odd numbered pages. If left margin = 2 inches and right margin = 0.5 inches,
and Folio mode is selected, the left margin for even numbered pages will be 0.5
inches and the right margin for those pages will be 2.0 inches. At the same
time, text specified for the Top Right corner will be placed in the Top Left
corner for even numbered pages, so that it is at the outside edge for all
pages.
This option is on the Margins window.
Press Esc to Close Help Window
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.1.5. 1 Page/ Print Option ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The Default Queue setting will use the queue which is selected as the default
printer at the time TEXTorPS is started. If you change default printers,
TEXTorPS will not change the queue it is monitoring unless it is stopped and
restarted.
Multiple copies of TEXTorPS may be run at one time to monitor several queues.
To facilitate doing this routinely, the program parameter can be set to an
integer which identifies which queue to use from the list which shows on this
screen, with 0 representing the Default Queue, 1 the first queue below that,
etc.
o NET USE Printer Port
Use this option to select which printer port has been linked to a LAN queue
by a NET USE LPTn \\server\queue command. If you don't have a NET USE
command active, this setting should be "NO NET USE". Also it is "NO NET USE"
if the TCPIP LPRMON command is used to redirect the monitored queue.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.5.2. NET USE Printer Port ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If you are using the LAN command NET USE LPTn \\server\queue to define a LAN
printer, identify the logical printer port in the NET USE command on the
listbox "NET USE Port for output" which shows on the Queue screen. Make
certain that this logical port does not correspond to the "Monitored Printer
Queue" which is set in the listbox on the left side of the same screen. If
necessary, create an additional printer object set for an unused LPTn port, say
LPT2, for use as the default printer port and "monitored queue".
This option is on the Queue window.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.9. Exit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select this menu item or Press F3 to exit the program. It is necessary for the
printer to be on and the spooler working for this exit to complete. If you have
trouble, try End Task from the task list. That will work for most printer
drivers. The normal exit procedure will exit after any job presently being
spooled by TEXTorPS is completed. A flush job is sent to permit shutdown with
some printer drivers, but will be ignored by PostScript printers.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Pages ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The following actions are on the Pages Submenu. These options permit the manual
emulation of duplex printing by allowing the user to print even numbered pages,
then reinsert paper and print the odd numbered pages. The menu accelerator
sequences Alt-p-e , Alt-p-o, and Alt-p-a can be used in this process. Click on
one for more help.
