PrtScr is a PM program which allows capture of the desktop screen
image to a clipboard, a file, or a printer. By copying the contents
to the clipboard, the image can be copied into a word processor with
the 'paste' options.
o Selecting What To Capture/Print
o Configuring Your Desktop
Help is available for the following windows
o Setup Window
o Color Remap Window
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.1. Selecting What To Capture/Print ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can capture/print the complete Desktop, an active window, or a selected
area of the desktop. The location of the mouse pointer controls what is
captured when the PRINTSCREEN key is pressed.
o Capture active windows by moving the mouse pointer over the active window
and pressing the PRINTSCREEN key. The active window is the one which has the
current keyboard focus.
o Capture the complete desktop by moving the mouse pointer off of the active
window and pressing the PRINTSCREEN key.
o New to this version is the ability to capture a selected rectangle. The
procedure involves:
1. Pressing the CTRL-PRINTSCREEN key combination.
2. The mouse pointer will change from an arrow to a square box with an
arrow pointing to the top left corner. Move the pointer to the starting
point of the rectangle you wish to capture.
3. Press and hold mouse button 1 down, stretching the rectangle to the
area you wish to capture.
4. Release mouse button 1. PrtScr will then capture the selected area.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2. Configuring Your Desktop ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
OS/2 2.0 has a Print Screen program available which can be enabled or disabled
from the System Setup dialog. You should disable the Print Screen Key to use
this program. (Open OS/2 System icon->System Setup->System->Print Screen
tab->click disable button.)
If the Print Screen Key is not disabled, then PMPRTSCR supplied with OS/2 will
also be enabled and you could get a copy going to the printer each time you
press the Print Screen Key!

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Dummy ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. General Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The setup dialogue allows you to configure PrtScr. You can set the type of file
you wish to store the captured images and the destination of the output. For
example, you can store directly to the system clipboard, print directly to a
printer, or store the captured images to a file.
Storing to a file is the most common usage of the product. By storing the image
in a file, you can recall them at a later time and paste the images into the
clipboard or import the images into a word processor or presentation software.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2. Help For Setup No Remap ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Selecting NO REMAP accepts the colors as captured from the screen. If you are
in 256 color mode, then all output to the clipboard or to the file will be in
the same mode.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.3. Help For Setup Bitmap ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Selecting the "Bitmap" option allows all output of the PrtScr program to be
produced in the OS/2 bitmap format.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.4. Help For Force 8 Bit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Selecting this option only has an affect if your machine has more than 256
colors. What this option does is to decrease the size of the bitmap to a 256
color bitmap. However, you will need to do a proper color remapping in order
for the many colors to be properly reduced to 256 colors.
Note: The WPG and GIF format files are 8-bit files regardless of your screen
resolution. If you are operating in a mode with greater than 256 colors,
you will have to perform a recolor for these formats.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.5. Help For Setup Remap ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Selecting this option will allow you to remap the colors as defined on the
color mapping screen. When remapping is completed, you define the color index
stored in the bitmap.
The main purpose of remapping colors is to produce a better black and white
image without having to place your color scheme into a monochrome mode.
Note: Even if you have a remapped palette stored in the configuration, this
option allows you to override that process and stay with the original
palette as it is captured.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.6. Help For Setup Printer ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Selecting the "Printer" output options prints the screen image directly to the
output printer device. Data is not stored in either the clipboard or a file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.7. Next File Number ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Next File number spin button shows the next number that will be assigned to
a file when the following screen capture occurs. Names are of the form
PRTSCRxx.BMP where xx is a number between 00-99.
Note: If you reset this value, existing files with the same number will be
overwritten.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.8. Help For Setup WordPerfect ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Selecting the "WordPerfect" option allows all output of the PrtScr program to
be produced in the WordPerfect's .WPG format.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.9. Help For Setup GIF ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The GIF format is the CompuServe Graphics Interchange Format. Selecting this
option will build a .GIF file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.10. Help For Window's BMP ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Window's BMP type file is a Microsoft Window's bitmap.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.11. Help For PCX ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This format is PC Paintbrush format.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.12. Help For Setup File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Selecting the "File" output option prints the screen image directly into an
output file. The files are created in the specified subdirectory that you setup
in the setup option.
Filenames are formatted; "PRTSCRxx.BMP" or "PRTSCRxx.WPG" for bitmaps and
WordPerfect respectively where "xx" is a number between 00-99. The program
will remember the last number used and when restarted will pick back up where
it left off. Once "99" has been reached, the program will start back over at
"00".
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.13. Help For Setup Clipboard ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Selecting the "Clipboard" output option allows the output of PrtScr to be
stored directly into the OS/2 clipboard. This is useful for 'pasting' into word
processors which can use the clipboard.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.14. Help For Setup Directory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This specifies the default directory to store files built by PrtScr when you
select the "Files" option. All files are formatted; PRTSCRxx.BMP or
PRTSCRxx.WPG. These files will be stored in the specified subdirectory.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Color Remapping ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Dummy ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Additional help is provided for the following:
o General Information
o How to Remap the colors
o Color Ball
o Color Pallette
o Defaults
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Dummy ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.1. General Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The color remapping dialogue allows you to remap the colors stored in the
image. The primary purpose is to set the colors so that you can improve the
output quality on monochrome devices without having to place your desktop into
a monochrome mode.
It is also used to remap from 24-bit color mode down to an 8-bit color mode. If
you are operating in 65,536 colors and wish to map down to a 256 color bitmap,
then you can determine the color remapping process.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.2. How to remap the colors ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The color ball located on the left side of the screen contains the colors
available for use in the bitmap. The colors in the valueset in the lower left
hand of the screen make it eaiser to select basic colors like gray, white, and
black. These three colors are hard to select from the color ball. If at any
time you get lost, press the Default Pushbutton to set the colors back to the
original unaltered palette.
You can locate a color to be changed by taking the mouse and moving it over the
recolored image in the lower right hand side of the screen. As the mouse moves
over the image, the pointer will change to a down arrow. Click once with mouse
button 1 on the text or color you wish to change. The color will be located in
the color ball by moving the cross hairs.
Once a color has been located in the color ball, you can change the color by
double clicking with mouse button 1 on a color from either the black, white,
and gray palette or by simply moving the cross hairs with the mouse. By holding
the mouse button down while dragging over the color ball, the colors will
change in the remapped image in the lower right as the cross hairs are moved.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.3. Color Palette ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This area contains three colors: 1) Gray, 2) White, and 3) Black. It is hard to
locate these colors in the color ball, so these are provide to make it eaiser
to select these colors. As with the color ball method of color selection, you
first select the area for the color to be changed, and then double click on one
of the three available colors. The cross hairs will also move on the color ball
to match this color.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.4. Defaults ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Pressing this button will place the remapped image back to the original colors
as defined by the device driver. Use this if you get lost and need to start
over in your color remapping.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.5. Color Ball ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This object contains the source for color changes. Select the area from the
image in the lower right hand corner of the screen to be changed, then move the
cross hairs on the color ball to change the color.
