4216-031 AES README.TXT file.
∙ How do I install the code?
To install the code put the diskette in the A: drive and enter the follow-
ing at an OS/2 prompt.
A:INSTALL A:
There is a README.TXT file on the diskette with common questions and an-
swers.
∙ I am Experiencing problems when I run out of paper.
If you have attached your printer via the parallel port and are experienc-
ing problems when you run out of paper (or using the sheet feeder with tray
switching enabled) on the printer you should reinstall using the recom-
mended serial attachment. If 19200 Baud serial does not supply adequate
performance install as follows:
INSTALL A: /P
When the AES installation menu appears there will be a 57600 baud option.
If you select this option you will get better serial performance.
∙ I do not want the ICON to show up on my Desktop. Can I do this?
If you want 4216AES to run unseen, you can install as follows:
INSTALL A: /H
The install program will not set up AES to run as a detached process. You
can also use the /P option described above.
∙ How can I print from the DOS box and Windows?
Windows from the DOS box has not been tested. However, the following may
be helpful, but use at your own risk.
In the file WIN.INI change the 'ports' entries as follows.
LPT1:= --> LPT1.OS2=
LPT2:= --> LPT2.OS2=
LPT3:= --> LPT3.OS2=
∙ How do I change the baud rate of my 4216 printer?
If you did not select 'Cancel' when requested to set your printers switches
to Down-Down-Down-Down in the install program your printer is already set
correctly and you do not need to read further.
If you selected one of the COMx ports from the install program there is a
file in your AES install directory (C:\OS2\AES) called 'SETSER.PS'. This
is a PostScript job that will set your printers serial baud rate to the
value you requested in the install program. You should now do the follow-
ing.
1. Set the switches at the back of your printer to Down-Down-Down-Down.
2. From an OS/2 window enter (we are assuming COM1 is being used)
MODE
COM1:1200,N,8,1,TO=OFF,XON=OFF,IDSR=OFF,ODSR=ON,OCTS=ON,DTR=ON,RTS=OFF
3. From an OS/2 window enter
COPY SETSER.PS COM1:
4. A sheet of paper should print on your 4216 telling you the new serial
baud rate.
5. The switches should now be set to Up-Down-Down-Up.
∙ I have ended the 4216AES program. How can I restart it without having to
restart my PC?
In the sub-directory that you installed your AES code in (default is
C:\OS2\AES) there is a STARTAES.CMD file which can be executed from an OS/2
prompt. This will restart the code.
∙ How do I add Separator pages to my jobs?
For OS/2 1.1: Use the Control Panel and the options 'Setup' and 'Spooler
queues...'. Click on 'Names'. Add the following to the 'Network options:'
box.
SEPARATOR="C:\OS2\AES\4216PX.SEP" for your Proprinter XL Queue
SEPARATOR="C:\OS2\AES\4216PS.SEP" for your PostScript Queue
SEPARATOR="C:\OS2\AES\4216HP.SEP" for your Laserjet Plus Queue
SEPARATOR="C:\OS2\AES\4216D.SEP" for your Diablo Queue
For OS/2 1.2: Use the Print Manager and the options 'Setup' and 'Queues'.
Click on 'Change...'. Add the following to the 'Network options:' box.
SEPARATOR="C:\OS2\AES\4216PX.SEP" for your Proprinter XL Queue
SEPARATOR="C:\OS2\AES\4216PS.SEP" for your PostScript Queue
SEPARATOR="C:\OS2\AES\4216HP.SEP" for your Laserjet Plus Queue
SEPARATOR="C:\OS2\AES\4216D.SEP" for your Diablo Queue
Warning: The Print Manager treats a separator page as a separate job.
Therefore, if there are jobs in multiple queues attempting
to print the separator page will not print immediately prior
to the job it is separating. Therefore, we recommend that
you do not use separator pages.
4216-031 AES for OS/2 Q and A's.
∙ What is the recommended attachment to OS/2?
The recommended attachment of the 4216 printer to OS/2 is via the serial
port.
∙ Why is the serial connection the recommended attachment for OS/2?
It is more reliable than the parallel attachment.
∙ What is the fastest rate I can send data to the printer on the serial port?
The fastest fully supported data rate for RS232C is 19200. However, it is
possible to attach the 4216-031 to the serial port at a data rate of 57600.
It is recommended that you use a short shielded printer cable like IBM PN.
8509386. If you experience a data transmission problem at 57600 it will be
necessary to reinstall the AES code at 38400. If you still experience
problems at 38400 you should reinstall at a slower speed. If you still ex-
perience problems at 19200 for PS/2s (or 9600 for PC/ATs) there is some
other problem with the serial attachment that should be investigated.
∙ How do I install the code to allow me to us the 57600 serial option?
Place the install diskette in the diskette drive (I will assume the A:
drive for this example) and enter the following at an OS/2 prompt.
INSTALL A: /P
∙ I have chosen to install at 57600 on the serial. How does this perform
compared to the parallel attach?
Our very brief studies indicate that the performance at 57600 is comparable
to the parallel port on OS/2.
∙ Will this program work on my LAN?
This code will work with the LAN program that comes with OS/2 1.1 EE or
OS/2 1.2 EE.
∙ I have installed the AES code on my LAN server. When I print jobs from my
remote work station the jobs just sit in the spooler and never show a
printing status. What is wrong?
When setting up the LAN both the remote work station and the server must be
set up so that printer types are consistent. Refer to your LAN manuals to
do this. If the problem persists consult your IBM LAN support group.
∙ I have Microsoft OS/2 and a 3COM network. Will AES work for me?
The 4216AES code has only been tested on the IBM OS/2 SE 1.1, IBM OS/2 EE
1.1, IBM OS/2 SE 1.2, and IBM OS/2 EE 1.2 only. Any other configurations
have not been tested and the results are unknown and unsupported.
∙ The install program only gives me the option of three printers. The DOS
version allows me to define a LPT4 also. Can I do this?
As the OS/2 Print Manager is structured today it is possible to use LPT1,
LPT2, and LPT3 only.
∙ Can I connect more than one 4216-031 to my PC and run 4216AES to both
printers?
No. 4216AES will only drive one 4216 printer.
∙ I have a different printer connected to LPT2 and a 4216-031 connected to
LPT1. Will this work?
Yes. In the install program change the LPT2 line to 'none' and then con-
tinue with the install. Your LPT2 printer will be left alone. However,
this will limit you to only two modes to automatically switch between.
∙ After I have finished installing the code how do I print?
If you chose the default installation parameters LPT1 is a proprinter, LPT2
is a PostScript printer, and LPT3 is a Laserjet Plus printer. With this in
mind print to the desired printer as if there were three printers attached
to your OS/2 system.
∙ If I attach my printer using the serial port can applications go directly
to COM1?
No. The application should still send its output to LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3 (or
the queues associated with these printers).
∙ Are any changes required in DEFAULTS.031?
No. DEFAULTS.031 is not needed for the OS/2 installation.
∙ If print jobs get stuck in the queue is there any recovery?
This is a Print Manager issue. Refer to your OS/2 books.
∙ I have printed a job and the LED blinks for a while and then quits. There
is no output. What is wrong?
Be sure you are sending the proper data to the proper port. If you have a
proprinter file send it to the LPT that is defined as your proprinter. If
you send it to the LPT that is defined as your PostScript printer the LED
will blink for a while and then quit with nothing printing. Try printing
the file again but to the LPT defined as your proprinter.
∙ When I print a file the printer does print. However, the output is not
what I expected. It looks like a program listing. What is wrong?
If you send your PostScript job to the LPT that is defined as your pro-
printer the PostScript source will print instead of the formatted file you
were expecting. Try printing the file again but to the LPT that is defined
as your PostScript printer.
∙ The installation menu has an option about screen fonts, where are they?
The screen fonts are not ready at this time. They are being worked on.
