BEFORE YOU START
Special thanks to David K. Clark (DCLARK at AUSVM1) for the initial
code contained in several WFWINx packages. Also to Ahmad Ali (Ahmad at
BCRNOTES) for additional code and support.
This utility should only be used if you are unable to install Warp on
your system. It will update the Device Drivers on your Installation
DISK 1 for use during installation then update these drivers on your
hard disk at the end of the first phase of Warp installation (after
DISK 6 has been processed but before you re-boot to continue the
second phase of install).
If you already have Warp installed and are having problems you need to
contact IBM OS/2 support to inquire about a fix for your specific
problem. If one is available you will be given instructions on where
you can download the Fixpak that contains your fix.
The support phone numbers are in the Customer Service and Support
document in the box your copy of OS/2 Warp came in.
This utility will work for either a Warp diskette-based or CDROM-based
install.
Do the following to prepare to use this utility:
1. Use DISKCOPY in either DOS or OS/2 to copy Installation DISK 1.
Be sure to use 2MB capacity diskettes as 1MB capacity diskettes
will not work reliably when formatted to 1.44MB. Use this copy
when running this utility unless directed to do otherwise.
2. Place WARPINST.EXE in a directory by itself. Enter WARPINST. Since
this is a self-extracting ZIP file the original, un-compressed
files will be created in this directory.
3. Copy WARPINST.EXE to a diskette for safekeeping then delete it
from the hard disk.
4. Copy all the other files to another diskette for use during phase
2 if you plan to format the partition they are on during OS/2 Warp
installation.
Total space required for WARPINST.EXE and the un-zipped files is
1.25MB. Without WARPINST.EXE the space required is 800K so the device
driver files, UPDTINST.BAT/CMD and README.UPD file will fit on a
single 2MB diskette.

INSUFFICIENT SPACE ON DISKETTE
This utility will work with 3.5" and 5.25" installation diskettes.
If you are using 5.25" diskettes (or if you have vendor-supplied
device drivers), free diskette space is very limited. If you find
that the UPDTINST utility reports an error while updating the
diskette, you have probably run out of room on the diskette,
Try deleting one or more un-used files from your second 5.25"
diskette.
WARNING - DELETING FILES
If you delete files, be sure to delete only from the copy of the
diskette. Keep your original Warp Install diskette(s) intact. This
is very important during the first phase of a diskette based install.
After DISK 6 has been processed you are prompted to insert DISK 1. At
this point you should use the original, unmodified DISK 1 as the
install program may want to copy one or more of the files you deleted.
This would be the only point at which you will need the original,
unmodified DISK 1.
Depending on your hardware and the file system you will use during
installation, some of the following files may be deleted.
■ HPFS.IFS (already deleted for CDROM 5.25" diskette install). Only
delete this if you are not using HPFS.
■ TEDIT.EXE and TEDIT.HLP
■ If you are installing a CDROM version of Warp, you can also delete
one or more unneeded CDROM drivers (see UTILITY FILES below). Be
sure to remark out (REM) the corresponding lines in CONFIG.SYS
located on the diskette you are working with (the copy).
■ You may delete one or more unneeded disk controller drivers (see
UTILITY FILES below). Be sure to remark out (REM) the
corresponding lines in CONFIG.SYS on the diskette.
Additional files may need to be deleted to obtain more free disk
space. One approach would be to delete either AIC7770.ADD,
AIC7780.ADD, or both:
Determine if your hardware includes an Adaptec SCSI disk controller
card. The device driver AIC7770.ADD is for Adaptec AHA 2740/2742, AHA
2840/2842VL, and the AIC 7770 EISA/ISA SCSI chip. Delete AIC7780.ADD
if you have any of the above controllers. Delete AIC7770.ADD if you
don't have any of the above controller cards.
Insufficient space on diskette 3
28 Aug 1997 Based on Warp FixPak XR_W031
Alternatively, you may instead delete unused CDROM drivers. This
approach would be to delete SONY535.ADD, SONY31A.ADD and SONYCDS1.FLT:
Determine if your hardware includes an Sony CDROM drive. If you do
not have a Sony CDROM drive, then you can delete these files. If you
have a Sony CDROM drive and do not have a Phillips CDROM drive, then
you can delete LMS206.ADD instead.
Edit CONFIG.SYS on the updated diskette for files you deleted. Insert
a remark (REM) at the beginning of each line that refers to a file
that you deleted. Delete any 'SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1' lines. (This line
is added automatically by the UPDTINST utility.)
Proceed with these instructions, including running the UPDTINST
utility. The UPDTINST utility is designed to update files that are
actually on your Warp Install diskettes (Phase 1) or hard disk (Phase
2). Therefore, you will have no problems when you delete optional
files (the deleted files will not be re-added).

UPDATE INSTALLATION DISK 1 (PHASE 1)
You may run this utility either from native DOS, or any version of
OS/2 2.x.
FROM DOS:
1. Change your directory to the directory containing the unzipped
files.
2. Type UPDTINST A:
Where A: is the diskette drive where you will be inserting
the OS/2 Install DISK 1 that you want to have updated.
This can be A: or B:, depending on your hardware
configuration.
3. Proceed with the installation of Warp using the updated diskettes.
FROM OS/2 2.X.
1. Start an OS/2 Fullscreen or Windowed session.
2. Change your directory to the directory containing the unzipped
files.
3. Type UPDTINST A:
Where A: is the diskette drive where you will be inserting
the OS/2 Install DISK 1 that you want to have updated.
This can be A: or B:, depending on your hardware
configuration.
4. Proceed with the installation of Warp using the updated diskettes.

Warning - format partition during install
If you are going to format the partition that contains the directory
you have the unzipped files in then you need to copy them along with
the UPDTINST.BAT and UPDTINST.CMD files to diskette before starting
the Warp install. You will not be able to run the WARPINST.EXE again
during the hard disk update (phase 2) since DOS support for Warp has
not been installed yet. You might want to place WARPINST.EXE on one
diskette and unzipped files on another diskette.
If you run this utility multiple times against the same set of
diskettes, you will need to edit CONFIG.SYS and remove duplicate lines
that contain SET COPYFROMFLOPPY= and SET WARPINST= lines. This will
conserve valuable diskette free space.
Warning - format partition during install 6

UPDATE YOUR HARD DISK (PHASE 2)
At the end of the first phase of Warp install, you are prompted to
remove DISK 6 (for diskette based install) then press Enter to
shutdown the system
DO NOT do this. Just remove DISK 6 if necessary and EXIT the install.
Do the following to update any device drivers that were installed in
your OS/2 Warp boot partition during the first phase of install with
the ones from this utility.
1. Open the OS/2 System Folder and the Command Prompts folder then
start an OS/2 Window or Fullscreen session.
2. Change to the directory where the unzipped files and the
UPDTINST.CMD file are located.
Note: If you formatted the partition these files were in during
install then place the diskette with the unzipped files in A: and
change to the A: drive.
3. Type UPDTINST C:
where C: is the drive you are installing OS/2 Warp on.
The UPDTINST program will make multiple passes updating device drivers
in one directory during each pass. It will add to or create
\OS2\INSTALL\SERVICE.LOG information on what files are updated.
It will also add a line to your C:\CONFIG.SYS like the following:
SET WARPINST=UPDTINST 04 Feb 1996 22:50:01 Build: 8.239
You can then enter echo %warpinst% from a OS/2 session to display this
data when needed. You can also see it by entering the SET command but
this will display all the environmental variables.

UTILITY FILES
Below is a list of device driver files that may be on the diskette.
The actual files on your diskette will vary depending on which version
of OS/2 Warp you are installing and if it's the CDROM or the diskette
version.
DISK and CDROM drivers are indicated for you in case you need to
delete some additional files to make room on the diskette you are
updating.
