  15.                   OS/2 Warp Version 3 continues the OS/2 tradition of providing
  16.            32-bit OS/2, DOS, and Windows software support so that you can take
  17.            full advantage of the power of your personal computer and preserve
  18.            your investment in application programs.  OS/2 Warp, the eighth
  19.            release of this popular, award winning operating system, is a stable,
  20.            mature platform positioned by IBM to set the standard for ease-of-use
  21.            and productivity in the personal computer industry worldwide.  The
  22.            two Warp offerings replace OS/2 for Windows and OS/2 2.1.
  23.                   OS/2 WARP VERSION 3 is designed to install over Windows+ 3.1,

  100. OVERVIEW   OS/2 WARP VERSION 3 (OS/2 WARP)
  101.            OS/2 Warp Version 3 is the follow-on release to OS/2 Version 2.1 and
  102.            OS/2  for Windows.  It represents IBM's continuing effort to enhance
  103.            this award winning operating system to appeal to a much broader
  104.            segment of the personal computer environment.  OS/2 Warp Version 3
  105.            has simplified installation, enhanced usability, a refined user
  106.            interface, improved "fit and finish" and is performance tuned to run
  107.            on entry memory systems.  In addition, new hardware support is
  108.            included for mobile computers, CD-ROM drives, SCSI adapters,
  109.            printers, audio devices and video accelerators.  A BonusPak for
  110.            OS/2 with a set of productivity applications and online connection
  111.            software is included with OS/2 Warp Version 3 so you can use your
  112.            system immediately after installation.  All of these features make
  113.            OS/2 Warp Version 3 ideally suited to home, home office and mobile
  114.            users, while maintaining value to corporate customers.
  115.                   OS/2 Warp Version 3 is released in two editions:
  116.            o   OS/2 Warp Version 3

  118.                   OS/2 Warp Version 3 is the replacement for OS/2 for Windows.
  119.            OS/2 Warp Version 3 with WinOS2 is the replacement for

  121.            existing Windows 3.1 or it's updates, Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or
  122.            Windows for Workgroups 3.11 will work with the Windows code enabling
  123.            the system to run OS/2, DOS and Windows application programs
  124.            simultaneously and seamlessly on the same display.  OS/2 Warp
  125.            Version 3 when installed on a system without Windows will run

  130.            USABILITY ENHANCEMENTS
  131.            The new LAUNCHPAD is a customizable tool bar on the desktop that
  132.            allows access to any object on the system with a single mouse click.
  133.            The LaunchPad can be in either vertical or horizontal orientation or
  134.            be set to float to the top of the desktop.  The LaunchPad is added
  135.            automatically on install and can use either regular sized icons or
  136.            the new mini color icons.  The user can add their most frequently
  137.            used objects to the LaunchPad, including folders, printers, or any
  138.            object on the system and access them or switch between open objects
  139.            with a single mouse click.
  140.                   A tutorial takes the user through an introduction to OS/2 Warp
  141.            Version 3 and how to work with objects.  It shows how to move, copy,
  142.            create shadows and how to work with printers.  It also explains how
  143.            to set up OS/2, DOS and Windows applications.  Each subject covered
  144.            in the tutorial has three levels of tips, one for the DOS user, one
  145.            for Windows users and one for the expert OS/2 user.  The tutorial is
  146.            in graphic design and has a very useful index and graphical help
  147.            facility.
  148.                   The WorkPlace shell is enhanced with a new look.  All of the
  149.            icons are redesigned in three dimensional color.  Many of the icons
  150.            are animated, for instance an icon of a folder changes to an open
  151.            folder when opened and back to a closed folder when closed.  The
  152.            default color palette is 16 solid colors, with a 256 color palette
  153.            available for systems with SVGA capability.
  154.            INSTALLATION ENHANCEMENTS
  155.            OS/2 Warp Version 3 simplifies installation for most users.  A new
  156.            Easy-Install will install OS/2 Warp Version 3 in a configuration
  157.            suitable for most personal computers without asking the user
  158.            additional questions.  An advanced install option helps experienced
  159.            users customize their systems.  When installed over an existing DOS
  160.            system, Dual Boot is automatically installed without requiring the
  161.            user to modify the DOS config.sys file and re-boot.  The appropriate
  162.            command lines are added automatically without a caution message.
  163.            Installation time is reduced significantly for diskette and CD-ROM
  164.            media.  The number of OS/2 diskettes are reduced through
  165.            state-of-the-art compression and extended Density Format technology
  166.            (XDF).  XDF allows 1.86MB to be put on media that previously
  167.            contained 1.44MB to reduce the number of diskettes to be loaded.
  168.                   OS/2 Warp Version 3 provides remote, unattended installation,
  169.            configuration, and distribution (CID).  Multimedia is CID enabled but
  170.            requires an "MINSTALL" to activate it.  The accompanying BonusPak for
  171.            OS/2 is not CID enabled.
  172.                   Multimedia is integrated into OS/2 Warp Version 3 and installs
  173.            automatically when the appropriate system hardware is detected,
  174.            eliminating a separate installation process.  The enhanced hardware
  175.            detection also simplifies installation of many system device drivers
  176.            for displays, hard disks, SCSI devices, CD-ROM drives and PCMCIA
  177.            cards.  Multiple printers can be installed during the initial
  178.            installation significantly simplifying the process for those
  179.            customers with multiple printers.  DOS application program migration
  180.            into OS/2 is expanded by the addition of more than 300 popular DOS
  181.            applications to the migration data base.  This allows OS/2 V3 to
  182.            automatically configure their DOS settings to be tuned for optimum
  183.            performance running simultaneously and seamlessly with other
  184.            applications.  The numeric error codes previously displayed when
  185.            OS/2 install encountered a problem are replaced in most cases by an
  186.            informational message to direct the user to the cause of the problem.
  187.            PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTS
  188.            OS/2 Version 3 is extensively reprogrammed and tuned to operate more
  189.            responsively in any system memory configuration but particularly on
  190.            4MB entry level personal computers.  PM-WIN, the desktop window
  191.            management system, is now available in 32-bit code to make front of
  192.            screen response significantly better.  The Workplace Shell is
  193.            enhanced to open objects faster, populate folders faster and load
  194.            applications faster.  The system is page tuned to ensure that the
  195.            most frequently used pages are in memory when needed, reducing the
  196.            amount of swapping to the hard disk.  There is an option in the
  197.            WinOS2 setup folder called Fast Load that basically preloads and
  198.            starts a Windows virtual machine so that Windows application programs
  199.            load very quickly.
  200.            ENHANCED SUPPORT FOR DISPLAYS
  201.            The OS/2 V3 package now includes 32-bit device drivers supporting the
  202.            graphics accelerator chips found on leading personal systems and
  203.            graphics adapters, such as Actix, Boca Research, Diamond, Number
  204.            Nine, Orchid, and others.
  205.                   IBM has added new device drivers for these chip sets, in
  206.            addition to the IBM XGA (R), XGA-2, IBM 8514, and S3 86C801/805/928
  207.            chips, already supported in OS/2 2.1x.

  215.                   These graphics display drivers provide users with accelerated
  216.            graphics and advanced color resolutions when operated in Presentation
  217.            Manager (R) and WinOS2 seamless and full-screen sessions.
  218.            ENHANCED SUPPORT FOR CD-ROM DRIVES AND ADAPTERS:
  219.            OS/2 Warp Version 3 now contains support for leading CD-ROM drives,
  220.            including proprietary, SCSI-based, and the new ATAPI-compliant CD-ROM
  221.            drives.  (AT (R) Packet Interface Version 2.1 is the industry
  222.            initiative to standardize CD-ROM attachment to IDE controllers).
  223.                   The new device drivers included in the OS/2 V3 package include
  224.            support for Chinon, IBM, Mitsumi, NEC, Panasonic, Philips (LMS),
  225.            Sony, Texel, Toshiba, and others.
  226.            MOBILE COMPUTER SUPPORT ENHANCEMENTS
  227.            OS/2 Warp Version 3 has many new features designed to support new
  228.            state-of-the-art hardware.  PlayAtWill provides plug and play
  229.            capability for PCMCIA devices such as fax modem cards, ATA hard
  230.            drives, flash memory adapters and token-ring or other network
  231.            adapters.  This support allows hot plugging; the cards can be
  232.            installed or changed while running and the system will recognize,
  233.            configure and initialize the card so that it is operational without
  234.            reconfiguring and rebooting the system.  You can install or change
  235.            PCMCIA cards on the fly for maximum system flexibility.  OS/2 Warp
  236.            Version 3 also features comet cursor, the ability to adjust the
  237.            cursor for maximum visibility on mobile displays.  The cursor can be
  238.            made bigger or smaller or color reversed for use with monochrome
  239.            displays.
  240.            BONUSPAK FOR OS/2
  241.            OS/2 Warp Version 3 is shipped with an accompanying BonusPak for
  242.            OS/2 containing a set of productivity and online connection software.
  243.            This value-packed suite of application programs provides everything
  244.            you need to use your personal computer immediately.  The BonusPak
  245.            includes the following software programs:
  246.            o   IBM WORKS is a collection of productivity tools and application
  247.                programs designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of users.
  248.                This collection will benefit users in corporate environments,
  249.                small business, home business and for personal use at home.  IBM
  250.                Works includes:
  251.                -   Word Processor:  A full-function word processor that includes
  252.                    advanced features such as tables, merge printing, graphics
  253.                    objects, in addition to function found in full function word
  254.                    processors.
  255.                -   Spreadsheet:  A full-function spreadsheet that includes a
  256.                    variety of features designed to meet the needs of many
  257.                    applications.  Combine the spreadsheet capability with the
  258.                    chart application and you can produce a compound document
  259.                    with text, numbers and charts on a single page.
  260.                -   Chart:  A versatile charting application that can produce a
  261.                    variety of chart types and allows enhancement with text and
  262.                    drawing tools.  Charts can be printed on their own or
  263.                    combined into other IBM Works documents.
  264.                -   Database:  A powerful, easy-to-use database application
  265.                    program that can organize both text and graphical
  266.                    information, and import and export files in a variety of
  267.                    formats.  The database application works with the IBM Works

  271.                -   IBM Works Personal Information Manager (PIM):  A collection

  276.                -   FaxWorks for OS/2:  A 32-bit fax software program sends and

  283.            o   IBM INTERNET CONNECTION FOR OS/2 a complete Internet software
  284.                package that gives you access to the vast resources of the
  285.                Internet.  This Internet application takes the complexity out of
  286.                the command-line-based Internet applications of today and provide
  287.                the user with a "one button" install and one button registration
  288.                and hookup to the Internet.  When used with the Advantis default
  289.                service provider software, the Internet becomes easily accessible
  290.                and fun to explore.  The IBM Internet Connection for OS/2
  291.                consists of the following:
  292.                -   UltiMail Lite:  An easy-to-use interface for creating,
  293.                    sending, receiving and storing electronic mail.  It is a
  294.                    simplified version of the standards-based, client/server
  295.                    version of Ultimail for OS/2.  Because it supports the SMTP
  296.                    and MIME standards for mail, images and binary attachments
  297.                    (such as programs and files) can be included as part of a
  298.                    mail item.
  299.                -   Gopher Client:  A graphical, user friendly interface to the
  300.                    Internet enabling the user to locate and display or transfer
  301.                    information to or from the Internet.  The Internet consists
  302.                    of more than 30 million computers; Gopher helps you navigate
  303.                    comfortably and confidently among these systems.
  304.                -   TelnetPM:  Allows the user to login to other computers on the
  305.                    Internet.  Programs and information located on other
  306.                    computers can be accessed as though they were on your own
  307.                    computer.  Supports VT100 and VT220 emulation.
  308.                -   PMANT:  An OS/2 Presentation Manager application that allows
  309.                    access to information and programs located on Internet hosts
  310.                    that support 3270 sessions such as VM or MVS, using TN3270
  311.                    emulation.
  312.                -   FTPPM:  An OS/2 Presentation Manager application that allows
  313.                    you to easily share, store and distribute data between your
  314.                    computer and other computers on the Internet.  If you are
  315.                    authorized access to a given computer, you can manipulate
  316.                    files on that computer as if it were your own.
  317.            o   WEBEXPLORER BETA:  The IBM WebExplorer beta software is available
  318.                electronically via the IBM Internet Connection for OS/2.  This is
  319.                prerelease software that users can easily download and use by
  320.                simply clicking on an icon on the Gopher Server or IBM Home Page.
  321.                With WebExplorer, users can access the World Wide Web (WWW)
  322.                through a graphical user interface.  The WWW links resources
  323.                together in an easy-to-use fashion.  For example, a user can get
  324.                a map of a country, click on a city to retrieve local
  325.                information, see photographs, and read about current
  326.                demographics.  With WebExplorer, users traverse the Internet by
  327.                moving from one document to another via links or hyperlinks, and
  328.                can save and annotate documents.  The general availability level
  329.                of the WebExplorer is planned to be available electronically in
  330.                December 1994.
  331.            o   COMPUSERVE INFORMATION MANAGER FOR OS/2:  Developed by CompuServe
  332.                for OS/2 Version 3, this program helps you get the most from your
  333.                CompuServe membership.  An object-oriented user interface allows
  334.                you to access, sort and utilize the online information and
  335.                services quickly and easily.  There is a simple sign-up icon, if
  336.                you are not currently registered with CompuServe but would like
  337.                to try the service.
  338.            o   IBM PERSON TO PERSON FOR OS/2:  Allows people to work together
  339.                without actually being together, with their personal computer and
  340.                a data link.  This link can be established over modems, LANs,
  341.                ISDN or the Internet.  Data to be worked on is placed into the
  342.                shared clipboard and can be modified in real time.  All parties
  343.                see the same data at the same time.  Other functions allow
  344.                sending data and the ability to carry on a keyboard dialog.
  345.            o   MULTIMEDIA VIEWER:  An object-oriented tool that enables users to
  346.                organize, manage and play multimedia image, audio and video
  347.                files.  Miniature picture views (thumbnails) of files make it
  348.                easy to identify, organize and select multimedia data.  Media
  349.                browsers will display or play a file by double-clicking on the
  350.                thumbnail frame.
  351.            o   VIDEO IN FOR OS/2:  Enables users to capture digital video and
  352.                compress the data into files on their hardfile.  Both IBM
  353.                Ultimotion (TM) and Indeo AVI format are supported.  The stored
  354.                video files can then be played back on and OS/2 V3 system.
  355.            THE IBM DEVELOPER'S TOOLKIT FOR OS/2 WARP VERSION 3
  356.            The IBM Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp Version 3 will be made
  357.            available on CD-ROM as part of The Developer's Connection for OS/2.
  358.            Prior to this release, IBM Developer's Toolkit was available as a
  359.            separate product.  The IBM Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp
  360.            Version 3 is positioned to assist developers of OS/2 specific
  361.            applications.  The Multimedia Presentation Manager Toolkit/2 product
  362.            is integrated into this version of the IBM Developer's Toolkit.
  363.                   The Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp Version 3 includes:

  405.                   OS/2 FOR SYMMETRICAL MULTIPROCESSING is the high-end member of

  422.            HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:  The minimum hardware configuration for
  423.            OS/2 Warp Version 3 is as follows:
  424.            o   Intel 386 SX-compatible, or higher, personal computer
  425.            o   4MB system memory and a hard disk with 35MB to 55MB free space
  426.                available to the operating system depending upon installation
  427.                options selected.
  428.                -   Up to 30MB additional hard disk space may be required for the
  429.                    BonusPak applications depending upon user installation
  430.                    selections.
