CA-REALIZER 2.0 BRINGS FREEDOM OF CHOICE
FOR WINDOWS AND OS/2 DEVELOPERS
Both BASIC Development Environments In One Box For $99
"Applications Written On One Platform Port Instantly To The Other"
ISLANDIA, N.Y., November 1, 1993--Bringing to market the first
Windows--OS/2 visual programming environment that is as powerful as
it is easy-to-use, Computer Associates today began shipping
CA-REALIZER 2.0 at an introductory price of $99 through March 31,
1994.
Regularly priced at $247, CA-REALIZER 2.0 defines a new generation of
development tools for GUI applications minus the complexities of C
and development kits. By substituting visual tools for low level
coding, CA-REALIZER so significantly shortens the development cycle
that productivity can more than double--even where developers are
unfamiliar with the product.
"Faster, more intuitive, and even more powerful, CA-REALIZER 2.0 not
only permits but encourages freedom of choice for developers," said
Jack Kramer, CA director of application development products. "The
same CA-REALIZER code that creates native Windows applications can
simply be recompiled for native OS/2 applications.
"The process couldn't be simpler. There's now no need for
programmers to build separate applications for each environment.
Applications written on one platform port instantly to the other."
CA-REALIZER handles the mechanics of event-driven programming,
message passing, process sharing and other complexities--all behind
the scenes. It combines visual development tools, Programmable
Application Tools, and a structured superset of BASIC extended to
access Windows and OS/2 objects and resources.
Applications built with CA-REALIZER may be distributed free of
royalty or license fees.
CA-REALIZER's already powerful BASIC has been greatly enhanced, so
that compiled applications run many times faster than before. ODBC
support and Xbase file access make possible the easy development of
powerful database-oriented applications and client/server solutions.
CA-REALIZER eliminates the need for lengthy training demanded by the
complexities of low-level language. With CA-REALIZER, developers
create applications in a fraction of the time needed with traditional
tools. CA-REALIZER handles the intricacies of GUI programming,
including memory management, event handling and multitasking. This
permits developers to focus on application-specific code.
"The introduction of CA-REALIZER 2.0 is cause for celebration for the
many developers of applications who prefer to use the BASIC
language," stated John Soyring, director of software development
programs for IBM Personal Software Products. "BASIC programmers
worldwide can now use a single, powerful tool set to rapidly develop
applications for both IBM OS/2 2.1 and Microsoft Windows 3.1."
IBM will include a limited version of CA-REALIZER 2.0 on The
Developer Connection for OS/2 CD-ROM.
What Users Are Saying:
Chris Moore, president, Moore Consulting, Mesquite, Texas: "With
CA-REALIZER 2.0, I can build the same OS/2 and Windows applications
simultaneously, even starting development in Windows and continuing
it in OS/2. From a programming standpoint there are no differences
and no conversions are needed. The integration is seamless.
CA-REALIZER will even make a set of Windows or OS/2 install disks."
Joseph A. Tibollo, manager of PC development, BACK Information
Services, Toronto: "The bottom line is productivity -- CA-REALIZER
2.0's expanded matrix functions give it an edge because less code is
needed. Fewer lines of code means tighter code and faster
development cycles. CA-REALIZER 2.0 helps us be more productive."
Critical Enhancements
Multi-Platform Functionality--CA-REALIZER eliminates the need for
duplicate development in Windows and OS/2. Applications written on
one platform may be ported instantly to the other. This further
shortens the development cycle: productivity can double.
FormDev--FormDev allows developers to quickly design the visual
elements of a program using standard graphical objects.
CA-REALIZER's unique Programmable Application Tools make even such
complex items as spreadsheets, graphs and OLE objects incredibly easy
to build into applications. There is a new toolbar for easy layout
and modification of form objects, an object library for the creation
of form objects for reuse and distribution, and a built-in dynamic
menu editor. Standard custom controls can now be added to the object
palette.
FormDev automatically generates database query and entry forms
directly from existing Xbase files. Multiple forms may be edited
simultaneously and application files maintained together as an
integrated project. When FormDev code is edited, it can be
re-imported so that no changes are lost.
CA-REALIZER BASIC--CA-REALIZER is a rich development language with
more than 370 commands. Enhancements include true record structures,
nested families, matrix functions, and multidimensional arrays in up
to 30 dynamically expandable dimensions. Compatibility with
Microsoft's QuickBASIC has been improved, allowing for easy porting
of older DOS applications.
Programmable Application Tools--CA-REALIZER 2.0 includes such
high-level built-in tools as charts, spreadsheets, boards, logs,
animation, graphics tablets, and a scheduler -- all improved.
Charts now include pie, candlestick, I-beam, horizontal-bar,
filled-area and Gantt types, with over 300 plots in a single pane and
full control over fonts, colors, grids and text labels. The
spreadsheet tool now supports selection of rows, columns, continuous
regions or the entire sheet for cutting, pasting or other action.
Sheets display two-dimensional arrays expandable in either direction.
Developers retain full control over fonts and styles.
ODBC and Xbase Support--CA-REALIZER supports the Open Database
Connectivity (ODBC) standard, which provides access to all ODBC data
servers, including CA-DATACOM and CA-IDMS. CA-REALIZER imports and
exports Xbase (.DBF) files, automatically generating data entry forms
in FormDev.
CA-BLE--CA-REALIZER is the basis for CA's BASIC Language Engine
(CA-BLE), a new cross-product and cross-platform macro-language that
is being integrated into versions of CA products currently in
development. CA-SuperProject 3.0 is the first CA application to use
CA-REALIZER as its macro language across Windows and OS/2.
CA-BLE offers an end-user macro environment for creating and
executing complex sequences of instructions. CA-BLE will allow many
applications to work together as one; CA-BLE-ready applications share
data and instructions, pulling together disparate applications and
creating custom solution suites.
CA-RET--CA-REALIZER is now integrated with CA-RET, a powerful WYSIWYG
visual report writer that produces sophisticated reports from Xbase
and ASCII files as well as from data sent through DDE.
Project Builder--CA-REALIZER's Project Builder generates executable
programs for distribution, free of royalties or license fees.
Project Builder automates the creation of installation disks,
allowing professional delivery of the finished application.
System Requirements--CA-REALIZER is compatible with any system
running Windows 3.1 or OS/2 2.1.
"CA-REALIZER 2.0 shows that CA is serious about cross-platform
application development," said John D. Faig, senior research analyst,
workgroup computing strategies for Meta Group. "CA is providing a
common tool for developers who are comfortable with writing code as
well as developers who prefer a more visual object-oriented
approach."
Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE: CA), with over 7,000
employees around the world, is the leading software company for
integrated systems, database management, business applications and
application development solutions. These programs operate across a
full spectrum of mainframe, midrange and desktop computers. Founded
