IBM OS/2 WINS ZIFF-DAVIS EUROPE SOFTWARE EXCELLENCE AWARD
June 22, 1993
IBM OS/2 2.0 won the "Environment and Desktop Award", and was a
finalist in the "Technical Excellence" category at the Ziff-Davis
Europe Software Excellence Awards. The award was presented in
Cannes, France, on June 7, 1993.
Dr. Dave McAughtry, Director of IBM Personal Software Products Europe,
said:
"In today's competitive environment, usability is key. We're
delighted to have won an award from Ziff-Davis for our OS/2
user interface technology. But we won't rest on our laurels.
I'm determined that OS/2 will set the standard for desktop
operating systems of the 90s."
The Software Excellence Awards are determined by a panel from the
Ziff-Davis publishing group. The Senior Software Editors of three
Ziff-Davis Europe magazines ("PC Magazine" from the UK, "PC Expert"
from France and "PC Professionell" from Germany) evaluated software
released between April 1, 1992, and March 30, 1993.
IBM OS/2 2.0 was the outright winner of the "Environment and Desktop
Award", where the other finalists were Microsoft Windows for Workgroups,
Hewlett-Packard New Wave, and Norton Desktop for Windows.
OS/2 was also a finalist for the overall "Technical Excellence Award",
which was won by Borland Paradox for Windows; the only other finalist
in this top-of-show category was Lotus AmiPro v 3.
In May, IBM announced version 2.1 of its award-winning OS/2 operating
system, which will be released in late June. This builds on the success
of version 2.0 by adding support for Windows 3.1 applications, and
includes a full-function Multimedia system, MMPM/2. Version 2.1 also
provides support for many more printers, CD-ROMs and types of screen,
and has higher performance, especially for graphics applications.
With more and more application programs from major software houses
becoming available every week, OS/2 is set to build on its substantial
lead as the premier 32-bit operating system for PCs.
Receiving the award, Gordon Bell, European Marketing Manager for IBM
Personal Software Products Europe, said:
"I am delighted that OS/2 has won this prestigious award for its
highly acclaimed user interface. There are more than 2 million
users of OS/2 version 2.0, and for many of them the Workplace Shell
user interface is the most compelling reason to buy the software --
even above its unparalleled reliability, thanks to Crash
Protection (TM), and its powerful 32-bit performance.
"We made a key decision with OS/2 version 2 to break with the older
user interface model used by OS/2 version 1 and Windows 3.x, as it
was limiting our ability to provide usability enhancements to our
users. The highly configurable desktop of OS/2 2.0 has been vital
to our success: a user can set it up to match exactly the way he
or she wants it to look.
"And I can promise that this is only a milestone. We will continue
to provide the best user interface technology to our users.
Future enhancements will extend the drag-and-drop usability
of the Workplace Shell to 'hot linking' and compound documents,
and of course will be fully compatible with the Workplace design
in today's OS/2 2.1."
