Gamers get Warped this Christmas
Eight New OS/2 Warp Games On The Way For Action-Hungry Gamers
AUSTIN, Texas, December 13, 1995 . . .This month OS/2* Warp
users can get their hands on eight new, native OS/2 games for a
mind-blowing 32-bit gaming experience.
"OS/2 Warp is the strongest gaming platform around and,
judging by our sales, OS/2 customers are buying games at record
rates," said Bradley Wardell, president of Stardock Systems, Inc.
and developer of OS/2 games such as Galactic Civilizations. "In
fact, for the past year, users have consistently voted Galactic
Civilizations into the top five most popular games on the weekly
Internet Top 100."
The new games line-up includes the MicroLearn Game Pack
Volume II** from MSR Development Corporation; SimCity 2000**,
SimTown** and Widget Workshop** from Maxis; and Galactic
Civilizations** 2.0 and Avarice** Preview from Stardock Systems.
Stardock also will release betas of Master of the Empire** and
Entrepreneur** in December.
MSR's MicroLearn Game Pack Volume II, a collection of eight
arcade-style brain teasers on the market since October, has
already proven to be a hot holiday seller. "Interest is really
picking up for the MicroLearn Game Pack," said Dudley Westlake,
executive vice president, MSR. "It was the number-two selling
game at Indelible Blue in November and its overall sales for the
month were triple those for October." The game pack challenges
players to mind-exhausting logic, maze and concentration matches.
Maxis' popular SimCity 2000, shipping for the OS/2 platform
this week, puts players in the mayor's office and provides all
the tools needed to plan, lay out, build and manage a city
against threats from natural and man-made forces. The makers of
SimCity 2000 enhanced the popular SimCity by adding a terrain
editor, a more intuitive user interface and an underground level
for creating water pipelines and a subway system. SimCity 2000
combines dozens of authentic city features, realistic
three-dimensional graphics and the kind of engrossing gameplay
that made the original SimCity so successful. SimTown brings
SimCity to an easier level for children who are ages 8-12, while
Widget Workshop allows kids to play the role of mad scientist in
a computerized laboratory. SimTown and Widget Workshop will be
available later this month.
Galactic Civilizations 2.0, the sequel to Stardock's
award-winning space strategy game, comes with improved graphics
and music, and networking hooks with add-on capabilities so that
a third player can be added to the game over the Internet.
"Stardock's Galactic Civilizations 2.0 builds upon the
proven foundation of OS/2 Warp and the absorbing gameplay of
Galactic Civilizations 1.0 to set a new standard in
high-performance strategy gaming," said Kris Kwilas, a student at
the University of Illinois and avid GalCiv player. "With an
advanced artificial intelligence engine, 24-bit graphics, a
stunning stereo soundtrack, and hooks for gaming over the
Internet, Galactic Civilizations 2.0 creates an addiction that
many gamers will find hard to resist."
Stardock's new Avarice Preview is a virtual reality
adventure/mystery that uses OS/2's 32-bit memory addressing and
multithreading to render unprecedented realism as players sleuth
through their rich uncle's home to discover the secrets of his
estate. Master of the Empire, Stardock's planetary conquest
game, pits players against human or computer controlled empires
on a quest to conquer the world, city by city. This beta allows
players to get involved with the game's development in order to
help make Master of the Empire a next-generation strategy game.
Stardock's Entrepreneur mirrors today's business landscape.
Players start a company, develop products and try to conquer the
world. Through business alliances and wars, the fate of the
corporate world rests in the players' hands.
