  1. Rightware Inc. is pleased to announce LinkRight for Lans for OS/2.   
  2.  
  3. LinkRight for LANs has two basic uses.  You can establish a connection 
  4. between two systems and transfer files between them, or you can clone 
  5. complete systems across the network.  LinkRight for LANs uses NetBIOS.
  6. The next release will include support for Novell IPX/SPX and for
  7. TCP/IP.
  8.  
  9. LinkRight for Lans allows you to transfer files from one system to 
  10. another on your network.  It works much like the serial and parallel
  11. port version of LinkRight in that one system is the Local system which 
  12. controls everything and the other system is the Remote system that sends 
  13. or receives files at the request of the Local system.
  14.  
  15. Included with the package are 3 versions for 3 different situations.
  16. An Administrator version is for cloning systems.  The Administrator 
  17. version includes the multicasting feature for sending one to many.  
  18. The User version is for normal file transfers between two systems on 
  19. the network.  A command line version is included for use on a system
  20. that has been booted from OS/2 floppies with no Presentation Manager
  21. installed.

  23. LinkRight for Lans can be used to clone systems across the network.
  24. It uses Netbios Multicasting so you can send one to many.  The basic
  25. procedure is to create your seed system, pack it into a single big
  26. file, and broadcast that file, and unpack it on the receiving end(s).
  27. We have tried to make it as easy and automated as possible.

  29. Our initial measure of timing is that you can clone a 40 MB partition to
  30. one machine in about 15 minutes.  Do 30 machines in an hour.  Do 400
  31. machines in 8 hours.  This does not include the setup time required
  32. to boot the target systems from bootable OS/2 floppies, do partitioning
  33. and formatting, etc.

  35. LinkRight Utilities
  36.  
  37. Included with LinkRight for LANs are some stand-alone utilities that you
  38. can use.  These utilities do not require a network connection or PM so 
  39. they can be used from bootable floppies or a system that does not have 
  40. a network connection.  These utilities are built for OS/2 and handle
  41. a number of OS/2 specific situations.

  43. PACKPART.EXE can be used to pack an entire partition into a single big 
  44. file.

  46. SHOWPACK.EXE can be used to display the files and directories in a packed 
  47. file.

  49. SHOWPART.EXE can be used to display the files and directories in a 
  50. partition.

  52. LRCRC.EXE can be used to do a CRC and Checksum on a single file.

  54. LISTDIFF.EXE can be used to compare two files that were created using 
  55. SHOWPART.EXE or SHOWPACK.EXE.

  57. SORTPACK.EXE can be used to sort a packed file. If you created a
  58. packed file using PACKPART.EXE, the packed file will be automatically
  59. sorted.  If you created a packed file by using the Administrator 
  60. Version and packing received files on the fly, the packed file will
  61. not be sorted and you will need to run SORTPACK.EXE before using 
  62. SHOWPACK.EXE.

  64. LRNBIO.EXE is a NetBIOS test program.  You can use this program to
  65. test all the network functionality that LinkRight for LANs needs to
  66. operate properly.  This test program is available separately on 
  67. Compuserve forum OS2AVEN lib 1 filename LRNBIO.ZIP.  You can download
  68. and use this test program to see if LinkRight for LANs will work on your
  69. network before you purchase the product.

  71. You can use these utilities to verify a complete OS/2 installation.
  72. At a later time, after the system has been used for days, weeks, or
  73. months, you can compare the ORIGINAL.LST to the CURRENT.LST to see
  74. if any drivers, .dll's, or executables have been trashed.  If the 
  75. partition that contains the important OS/2 files is also used for
  76. data, this partition could have a large number of files in CURRENT.LST
  77. that do not exist in ORIGINAL.LST so you can use /I to ignore these
  78. user data files and only look for the files from ORIGINAL.LST.
