  7. As promised, here's the scoop on the announcement today. It's rather
  8. long and complex, and I'm done my best to consolidate all the info and
  9. lay it out so it's readable...hope I've achieved that goal....and I hope
  10. you all like what we're doing with C Set....Max

  14. Today (10/28/93) IBM Software Solutions Toronto Lab announces three OS/2
  15. C Set ++ products:

  17. C Set ++ V2.1
  18. C Set ++ FirstStep
  19. C Set ++ Class Libraries Source V2.1

  21. Availability is 11/9/93 in the US. Please be aware that not all countries
  22. have announced these products today. If your country has not, be patient.
  23. I expect they will announce shortly.

  25. C SET ++ V2.1

  27. This is the latest release of the full C Set ++ product, and it replaces
  28. the current C Set ++ V2.0. Highlights are:
  29. - TK 2.1 now included
  30. - WorkFrame 2 V2.1 (WPS enabled) included (WF V1.1 also remains in the
  31.   product)
  32. - ICLUI Drag/Drop classes available
  33. - KASE:Set GUI Builder included
  34. - CSDs 1 and 2 incorporated
  35. - CD-ROM with documentation (CD-ROM Pak) available as an option (CD-ROM
  36.   without doc still available)
  37. - New pricing options (LAN and volume)
  38. - Upgrade pricing

  40. C SET ++ FIRSTSTEP

  42. This is a slimmed down version of C Set ++ at a slimmed down price, great
  43. for getting started in C Set ++. FirstStep has:

  45. - the same compiler/debugger code as C Set ++ except that it doesn't
  46.   have optimization.
  47. - three class libraries
  48.    - Standard Class Library
  49.    - Collection Class Library
  50.    - Application Support Class Library (string, date, time)
  51. - Toolkit 2.1 (same as C Set ++)
  52. - WorkFrame/2 V1.1 (C Set ++ V2.1 has both V1.1 and V2.1
  53.  
  54. EXTRA (the code analyser) and the Browser aren't in FirstStep, nor is
  55. the User Interface library.  These things aren't essential to start with
  56. C++, but they're a tremendously useful once you get going, or if you
  57. program for a living. They're in the full C Set ++ V2.1 package, which
  58. obviously costs more.

  60. C SET ++ CLASS LIBRARIES SOURCE V2.1

  62. Source code is now available for the User Interface and Collection Class
  63. Libraries.  This is a separate product, at a separate price.  Source
  64. code for other parts of C Set ++ is not available.

  66. Which to buy?
  67. ------------
  68. It depends on how much function you want and how much you want to pay.
  69. C Set ++ is loaded with features and functions and is a "professional "
  70. level product.  FirstStep is a slimmed down version of C Set ++ with a
  71. correspondingly lower price, great for those people just getting started
  72. with C or C++, or on a tight budget.  If you want all the bells and
  73. whistles, C Set ++ is the one to choose.  But if you want to try out the
  74. product, or you don't need all the class libraries, or the code analyser
  75. and such, then you should go for FirstStep.

  77. PRICING

  79. Because of the new licensing options and the volume packs and the
  80. upgrades from previous products, there are many part numbers.  This note
  81. does NOT cover all the part numbers associated with the three new
  82. products, but gives the main numbers you need. If you need further help,
  83. contact IBM through your local source (IBM office, IBM rep, dealer,
  84. distributor, CompuServe, IBMLink TalkLink BBS, workframe@vnet.ibm.com or
  85. cset2@vnet.ibm.com, etc, etc).

  87. These prices are IBM announced prices.  Some part numbers have a
  88. 'street' price which is the price you will pay at the IBM 1-800-3IBM-OS2
  89. number.  Your dealer/distributor may sell for less.  All prices quoted
