MILLER FREEMAN ANNOUNCES CONSOLIDATION OF OS/2 MARKET RESOURCES
(San Francisco) October 18, 1995 -- Miller Freeman, Inc., owner
and publisher of OS/2 Magazine, OS/2 Developer, and of the OS/2
World Conference and Exhibition, has announced the consolidation
of its OS/2 magazines and show into one business unit.
Effective October 1, 1995, the three properties are being
consolidated into Miller Freeman's Software Development unit.
"The centralization of these OS/2 properties into a single
business unit allows us to devote our full attention to
delivering superior products to the nearly 10 million users of
OS/2," said Regina Starr Ridley, vice president of the Software
Development Division. "Our advertising customers will benefit
with the most effective way of reaching the OS/2 market through
single points of contact. Our readers and show attendees will
benefit from the combined resources of two talented and respected
editorial staffs, joined by experienced columnists and
contributors."
"The new group will serve the information needs of developers,
corporate users and administrators, and technically advanced
users working on the OS/2 platform," according to Peter
Westerman, publisher of OS/2 Developer, and now publisher of OS/2
Magazine. "IBM's strength is in its ability to deliver mixed
platform-scalable solutions to customers. OS/2 is a key component
of IBM's strategy. Promoting software development for OS/2 is
required for the continued expansion of the platform. We'll
focus our efforts on providing the information our audiences need
to effectively use this powerful, stable operating system."
Beginning with the January 1996 issue, OS/2 Developer and OS/2
Magazine will be combined into one publication, under the name
OS/2 Magazine. This combined magazine will provide the
independent, technical, and business problem-oriented information
both publications are relied upon for in the OS/2 market.
"OS/2 Magazine is continuing its evolution as the leading OS/2
technical periodical. Our mission is to provide the information
our readers depend on in the day-to-day use of OS/2, from
consumers to information-services, from technical management to
software development," said Alan Zeichick, editor-in-chief of
OS/2 Magazine. "Combining the resources of the monthly OS/2
Magazine and bimonthly OS/2 Developer into one monthly
publication increases our editorial reach, and will allow us to
provide better technical information, and in a more timely way,
than the two magazines were able to do separately."
This resource consolidation also creates new opportunities for
vendors seeking to reach and sell into the expanding OS/2 market.
"In today's increasingly competitive software market, the most
successful vendors are looking for niches which offer consistent
and long-term growth. Much attention has been focused on
Microsoft's new operating system; some vendors will successfully
make the transition to profitability under Windows 95, but many
will not," said Catherine McConville, OS/2 Magazine's national
sales manager. "With the next major upgrade revenue opportunity
for Windows years away, the OS/2 market provides marketers with a
definable, targetable, and highly lucrative market for their
products and services. We intend to continue delivering buyers to
these companies."
