OS/2 SHAREWARE BBS EXPANDS LINE COUNT
October 15, 1993
Fairfax, VA . . . Due to a strong surge in demand the OS/2
Shareware BBS expanded its telephone line count to 12 today,
increasing the capacity of the system by 50%. The OS/2 Shareware BBS
contains the world's largest collection of OS/2 freeware, shareware,
and public domain programs and information.
"Getting through on the public lines required perseverance."
said Pete Norloff, owner and operator of the bulletin board system.
"The demand for this information is so great that additional capacity
was imperative."
"We finally outgrew the third machine that has hosted the BBS."
said Norloff, "We are now running on a single Intelisys 486 DX2/66
EISA/LB system with 32 MB ram, 2.3 GB of hard drive space, and S3
based accelerated VGA from Actix. Support for multiple high speed
serial ports is provided by a RISC-coprocessed Digiboard 16em. SCSI
disk support is provided by a RISC-coprocessed Adaptec 2742T. The
single machine easily supports 12 nodes plus local activity and
support functions. It will have no problems with an additional 4
lines and could probably be pushed to 24 or 32 lines with a little
more tuning.
"The whole operation runs smoothly thanks to OS/2 2.1's high
performance multitasking. It's not unusual to have all the nodes
active with callers downloading files and creating bundles of mail
for QWK compatible offline mail readers. Even with that high level
of activity, it's rare that a caller sees any indication that anyone
else is online."
A similar solution under DOS would have required a stack of at
least 13 computers consuming electricity and space and generating a
lot of heat. Running everything on a single computer reduces the
problems of component failure as well.
Callers can expect to find all the most recent software
available for OS/2 on the BBS. Programs range from communications
software to memory monitor utilities to video drivers to picture
display programs. OS/2 fixes are posted soon after IBM makes them
available. Text files providing tips and techniques as well as
general usage information are very popular downloads as well.

The OS/2 Shareware BBS has been online continuously since March
1990 and has taken over 240,000 calls to date. It is presently
taking approximately 23,000 calls a month from 5000 active callers in
27 countries. The OS/2 file collection is now over 5600 files
totalling over 700 MB. 54 message forums on a variety of OS/2 topics
from four computer networks are available to callers. The BBS is
located in Fairfax, Virginia and may be reached by dialing 703-385-
