  1.                  "UNIX TO OS/2 2.0 MIGRATION WORKSHOP"
  2.                        DESCRIPTION & SURVEY

  4. This library file provides a more detailed description of a proposed
  5. workshop that would assist customers in porting their UNIX applications
  6. to the OS/2 2.0 environment.  A message was posted to the 'Migration'
  7. forum section which briefly described this offering on 07/30/92.
  8.  
  9. A survey is also attached that will provide us some feedback to
  10. determine the need for such a workshop for the UNIX community.

  13. WORKSHOP CONCEPT
  14. ================
  15. The workshop is one week long.  It is a combination of classroom
  16. lectures and extensive hands-on lab sessions.
  17.  
  18. The classroom lectures would concentrate on educating the student on the
  19. major differences/similarities between the 2 platforms.  Examples of
  20. what some of the lectures would cover include:
  21. - Memory management
  22. - Event handling
  23. - Graphical User Interfaces
  24. - Tools to build applications
  25. Many examples of how you would implement a common piece of UNIX code in
  26. the OS/2 2.0 environment will be discussed.
  27.  
  28. The lab sessions are the "meat" of the workshop.  The customer would
  29. bring in the application that they wish to be ported and any associated
  30. tools that are required to build the application.  This data would be
  31. installed on an appropriate piece of hardware (RISC 6000 or PS/2).  A
  32. "target" PS/2 machine would also be provided to run the ported
  33. application.  During the course of the week, the customer would work on
  34. porting pieces of their UNIX application to the OS/2 2.0 platform.

  36. The instructors for this workshop would be well-versed in both UNIX and
  37. OS/2 2.0.  They will also act in a consulting capacity during the lab
  38. sessions.

  40. It is not the intent of this workshop to have a completely ported
  41. application by the end of the week.  It is primarily a "jumpstart"
  42. session that facilitates a much faster porting process to be completed
  43. at a later date.
