  4. TITLE       SYTOS PLUS/IBM FILE BACKUP UTILITIES FOR IBM OS/2 VERSION 1.2 AND DOS
  5.        VERSIONS 3.3/4.0
  6. ABSTRACT      The Sytos Plus (1)/IBM File Backup Utilities licensed programs
  7.        provide high performance, versatile tape and diskette backup/restore
  8.        function, designed for ease of use.    One program supports the
  9.        Operating System/2 (TM) (OS/2 (R)) Standard Edition Version 1.2 and
  10.        the IBM OS/2 Extended Edition Version 1.2 operating system
  11.        environments.  The other version supports the IBM DOS Versions 3.3X
  12.        and 4.0X environments.  Included in both programs are enhancements to
  13.        the SY-TOS (1)/IBM 6157 Tape Utilities Version 3.0 in the areas of
  14.        operating systems support and file backup management.  The user
  15.        interface is based on the Common User Access (CUA) recommendations.
  16.        The OS/2 version is a Presentation Manager (TM) application.  The IBM
  17.        6157-001 and 6157-002 tape drives and IBM 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch
  18.        internal and external diskette drives for the PS/2 (R) computers and
  19.        IBM Personal Computers are supported.  An option to compress
  20.        backed-up files can condense files up to 70% of the original file
  21.        size, reducing the backup media used by over half.  These programs
  22.        support backup requirements for the IBM OS/2 Local Area Network (LAN)
  23.        Server Version 1.2 and the IBM Personal Computer LAN Program
  24.        Version 1.3.
  25.           These programs are translated in the English language only.
  26.        Keyboard input and visual display of single-byte national language
  27.        characters are supported.
  28.           The planned availability date for Sytos Plus/IBM OS/2 File
  29.        Backup Utilities and for Sytos Plus/IBM DOS File Backup Utilities is

  50.        DESCRIPTION
  51.        SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
  52.        The Sytos Plus program is a file management utility designed to
  53.        archive, backup, compare and restore files using IBM 6157 tape drives
  54.        and IBM diskettes.  Network servers and stand-alone IBM Personal
  55.        Computers and IBM Personal System/2 systems are supported.  The Sytos
  56.        Plus program supports the IBM OS/2 Version 1.2 High-Performance File
  57.        System (HPFS) and the File Allocation Table (FAT) file system used in
  58.        OS/2 and DOS operating systems.  The Sytos Plus/IBM OS/2 File Backup
  59.        Utilities HPFS support includes long file names and extended
  60.        attributes.
  61.           Features relevant to the network environment for the IBM OS/2
  62.        LAN Server and the IBM Personal Computer LAN Program environments
  63.        include:
  64.        o   Ability to schedule unattended backup procedures of file servers
  65.        o   Prior to backup, on a server basis, optional message sent to all
  66.            users with active sessions
  67.        o   Flexible options to retry the backup of inaccessible files during
  68.            a backup procedure; prior to retry, additional message sent to
  69.            applicable users
  70.        o   The ability to backup files from another server's disk
  71.        o   Multitape volumes for systems with disk capacity larger than tape
  72.            capacity
  73.        o   Preservation and restoration of network security and access
  74.            rights
  75.        o   Automatic indexing of backed-up files.
  76.        USER PRODUCTIVITY
  77.        The Sytos Plus user interface is based on the Common User Access
  78.        (CUA) recommendations that represent the personal computer industry's
  79.        movement toward standardization.  The OS/2 version is a Presentation
  80.        Manager application.  The user interface offers an intuitive
  81.        point-and-shoot progression of windows for easy specification of
  82.        files from source volumes, directories within source volumes or
  83.        individual files.  More specific categories of files can be chosen by
  84.        designating date ranges, changed status for incremental backup, or
  85.        "wildcards" (for example, * and ?).
  86.           A responsive online help facility promotes learning, usability
  87.        and productivity.  Sample procedures are provided for commonly used
  88.        tasks to help reduce learning time.
  89.        INVESTMENT PROTECTION
  90.        The compressed backed-up files option can condense files up to 70%
  91.        (50% average) of the original file size.  This feature can more than
  92.        double the realized storage capacity of the backup device.  For
  93.        example, up to 500MB of compressed data could use the same storage
  94.        space as 150MB of uncompressed data.
  95.           The Sytos Plus program is upward compatible with its
  96.        predecessor product, SY-TOS/IBM 6157 Tape Utilities Version 3.0,
  97.        assuming the "file-by-file" backup option was used.  The Sytos Plus
  98.        universal file format is designed to allow file interchange between
  99.        the supported operating systems.

  133.            OS/2 environments, one MB beyond the amount of memory used for

  136.        o   Backup device (tape or diskette).  A compression feature
  137.            increases the storage capacity up to 70% (50% average).    Tape
  138.            backup devices supported are:
  139.            -   IBM 6157 Tape Drive Model 001 or 002.  Model 001 accommodates
  140.            60MB uncompressed data and up to 200MB compressed data.
  141.            Model 002 accommodates 150MB uncompressed data and up to
  142.            500MB compressed data.  One of the following attachment
  143.            features is required with the 6157.

  169.        LIMITATIONS
  170.        o   Because of the memory requirements for the SERVER configuration
  171.            of the IBM Personal Computer LAN Program Version 1.3, it is
  172.            suggested that Sytos Plus (DOS version) be installed and executed
  173.            only from systems configured as REDIRECTOR, RECEIVER and/or
  174.            MESSENGER.
  175.        o   With the error correction code option active, the capacity of the
  176.            backup device is reduced approximately 6%.
  177.        PLANNING INFORMATION
  178.           The customer is responsible for configuring the system with
  179.        the necessary hardware to serve the application.  The customer is
  180.        also responsible for program setup and operation, implementation
  181.        backup procedures and applicable problem determination procedures.
  182.        The user should be familiar with the operation of the applicable IBM
  183.        hardware and operating system.

  200.        option and a log option.
  201.           User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
  202.        implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
  203.        appropriate controls in application systems and communication
  204.        facilities.
  205. ORDERING   ORDERING INFORMATION
  206.           Orders for new licenses will be accepted now.  Unless a later
  207.        date is specified, orders will be assigned a schedule date of
  208.        October 5, 1990.
  209.           Shipment of orders will commence on the availability date.
  210.        Orders entered after the planned availability dates will be scheduled
  211.        for shipment on the Friday following the week of order entry or as
  212.        soon thereafter as supply permits.
