  2.                      IBM PSnS: Backup Control for OS/2
  3.  
  4. GENERAL:
  5.

  7. IBM PSnS is a 32-bit, fully HPFS and EA aware backup control
  8. program for OS/2 version 2.x developed by IBM UK Ltd's Warwick
  9. Development Group. Fully configurable for standalone PCs and
  10. networked workstations connected to file servers, mini and main-
  11. frame systems, it monitors filechanges as a background process
  12. under OS/2 2.x at intervals set by the user or systems supervi-
  13. sor. For compatibility with OS/2 version 1.2 and higher, a 16-bit
  14. version is provided.

  16. Backup and Restore are fully user configurable, providing auto-
  17. matic and manual incremental and full backups according to pre-
  18. configured global and local rulebooks, and selective and full
  19. restore according to user choice from the backup log maintained
  20. by PSnS. Global/local rulebook backup control is of particular
  21. advantage to the LAN system operator, enabling LAN or company-
  22. wide control of critical data backup through global rulebook
  23. settings while providing individual users with backup control
  24. over personal data through local rulebook settings they can
  25. implement according to choice and individual needs.

  28. HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:

  30. IBM PS/2, ValuePoint and compatibles
  31. IBM PC/AT 286 and compatibles (PSnS 16-bit for OS/2 1.2 & 1.3)

  33. MEMORY AND DISK REQUIREMENTS:
  34.  
  35. 384KB additional memory under OS/2
  36. PSnS uses approxiamtely 250KB of disk space
  37.  
  38. NETWORK OR HOST SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

  40. PSnS may be used in a LAN or attached to a host computer. Three
  41. options are available:
  42.  
  43. *  LAN
  44. *  IBM processor host attachment
  45. *  IBM Applications Systems host attachment
  46.  
  47. OPERATING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
  48.  
  49. PSnS operates under IBM OS/2 version 1.2 and above.
  50.  
  51. LANs are supported by the IBM Personal Computer LAN program or
  52. other LAN sharing programs that provide transparent access from
  53. an application in one PC to a disk on another PC.
  54.  
  55. Note: Since PSnS uses OS/2's enhanced Presentation Manager
  56. facilities it will not run under version 1.0 or 1.1 of OS/2.
  57.  
  58. BACKUP DEVICES SUPPORTED:
  59.  
  60. Standard OS/2 devices:
  61.  
  62. *  Fixed disk drives
  63. *  Diskette drives
  64. *  Network drives
  65.  
  66. Non-OS/2 supported devices:
  67.  
  68. *  Optical drives
  69. *  Host mini computers
  70. *  Host mainframe computers
  71. *  Removable media

  73. Note:
  74.  
  75. A drive is directly supported by OS/2 if OS/2 commands such as
  76. DIR and COPY work for that drive. If such commands function for a
  77. drive, it is directly supported by OS/2
  78.  
  79. Devices and removable media *not* directly supported by OS/2 are
  80. available to PSnS once it has been configured to recognise them
  81. and has been provided with the necessary commands applicable to
  82. each particular device during PSnS configuration.

  84. SUPPORTED NETWORK AND HOST SYSTEM ATTACHMENTS:
  85.  
  86. PSnS may be used in a Local Area Network (LAN) or attached to a
  87. host computer. Three options are available:
  88.  
  89. *  Local Area Network
  90.  
  91. PSnS may be used on a LAN where backup copies and global rule-
  92. books may be stored on remote disks or other devices. PSnS may be
  93. used in this manner on all LANs that are supported by DOS or OS/2
  94. for remote server functions.
  95.  
  96. *  IBM mainframe host attachment
  97.  
  98. An IBM mainframe system may be used to store backup copies. Using
  99. a mainframe host, the hardware and software requirements are the
  100. same as those for IBM's ECF (Enhanced Connectivity Facility), as
  101. the host is supported through ECF. Access to the host may be
  102. provided over any of the LANs mentioned here.

  104. *  IBM Applications System 400 (AS/400) family host attachment
  105.  
  106. Backup copies may be stored on these Application System hosts:
  107.  
  108. -- IBM AS/400             
  109.  
  110. -- IBM System/38
  111.  
  112. PCs can be connected over an IBM Token-Ring, LAN or over remote
  113. communications lines, if used. The PC hardware requirements are
  114. the same as those for the PC support being used. PSnS require-
  115. ments must also be met.

  117. Note on LAN compatibility:
  118.  
  119. As PSnS uses standard OS/2 calls for operation it is compatible
  120. with all networking software certified as OS/2-compatible.
