IBM PSnS: Backup Control for OS/2
GENERAL:
IBM PSnS is a 32-bit, fully HPFS and EA aware backup control
program for OS/2 version 2.x developed by IBM UK Ltd's Warwick
Development Group. Fully configurable for standalone PCs and
networked workstations connected to file servers, mini and main-
frame systems, it monitors filechanges as a background process
under OS/2 2.x at intervals set by the user or systems supervi-
sor. For compatibility with OS/2 version 1.2 and higher, a 16-bit
version is provided.
Backup and Restore are fully user configurable, providing auto-
matic and manual incremental and full backups according to pre-
configured global and local rulebooks, and selective and full
restore according to user choice from the backup log maintained
by PSnS. Global/local rulebook backup control is of particular
advantage to the LAN system operator, enabling LAN or company-
wide control of critical data backup through global rulebook
settings while providing individual users with backup control
over personal data through local rulebook settings they can
implement according to choice and individual needs.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
IBM PS/2, ValuePoint and compatibles
IBM PC/AT 286 and compatibles (PSnS 16-bit for OS/2 1.2 & 1.3)
MEMORY AND DISK REQUIREMENTS:
384KB additional memory under OS/2
PSnS uses approxiamtely 250KB of disk space
NETWORK OR HOST SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
PSnS may be used in a LAN or attached to a host computer. Three
options are available:
* LAN
* IBM processor host attachment
* IBM Applications Systems host attachment
OPERATING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
PSnS operates under IBM OS/2 version 1.2 and above.
LANs are supported by the IBM Personal Computer LAN program or
other LAN sharing programs that provide transparent access from
an application in one PC to a disk on another PC.
Note: Since PSnS uses OS/2's enhanced Presentation Manager
facilities it will not run under version 1.0 or 1.1 of OS/2.
BACKUP DEVICES SUPPORTED:
Standard OS/2 devices:
* Fixed disk drives
* Diskette drives
* Network drives
Non-OS/2 supported devices:
* Optical drives
* Host mini computers
* Host mainframe computers
* Removable media
Note:
A drive is directly supported by OS/2 if OS/2 commands such as
DIR and COPY work for that drive. If such commands function for a
drive, it is directly supported by OS/2
Devices and removable media *not* directly supported by OS/2 are
available to PSnS once it has been configured to recognise them
and has been provided with the necessary commands applicable to
each particular device during PSnS configuration.
SUPPORTED NETWORK AND HOST SYSTEM ATTACHMENTS:
PSnS may be used in a Local Area Network (LAN) or attached to a
host computer. Three options are available:
* Local Area Network
PSnS may be used on a LAN where backup copies and global rule-
books may be stored on remote disks or other devices. PSnS may be
used in this manner on all LANs that are supported by DOS or OS/2
for remote server functions.
* IBM mainframe host attachment
An IBM mainframe system may be used to store backup copies. Using
a mainframe host, the hardware and software requirements are the
same as those for IBM's ECF (Enhanced Connectivity Facility), as
the host is supported through ECF. Access to the host may be
provided over any of the LANs mentioned here.
* IBM Applications System 400 (AS/400) family host attachment
Backup copies may be stored on these Application System hosts:
-- IBM AS/400
-- IBM System/38
PCs can be connected over an IBM Token-Ring, LAN or over remote
communications lines, if used. The PC hardware requirements are
the same as those for the PC support being used. PSnS require-
ments must also be met.
Note on LAN compatibility:
As PSnS uses standard OS/2 calls for operation it is compatible
with all networking software certified as OS/2-compatible.
CURRENT VERSION AVAILABLE: 2.01
NEW ENHANCED VERSION 2.10, RELEASE EXPECTED SHORTLY.
