  17. PURDYS, NY. -- September 4, 1991 - C.O.L. Systems, Inc. has released
  18. the LAN version of the Osrm2 System.  This system, Version 1.3,
  19. provides resource monitoring, performance analysis and capacity
  20. planning capabilities for multiple servers or workstations running
  21. OS/2 over a local area network.
  22.         COL was first to provide resource monitoring and report
  23. generation for the OS/2 environment, collecting resource information
  24. for CPU, Disk, Memory, Swap, Interrupt, Thread, and Application
  25. activity with the Osrm2 Real Time Monitor.
  26.         The resource monitor, previously of C.O.L. design, has been
  27. rewritten to use the recently announced System Performance Monitor/2
  28. Data Collection Facility (DCF) from IBM.  "IBM has the handle on
  29. resource activity as measured in the kernel," says Frank Castellucci,
  30. president of C.O.L., " We will continue to improve upon the delivery,
  31. manipulation, analysis and management of the data."
  32.         "We have built a central data collector and router for client
  33. resource monitors running throughout the network," added Castellucci,
  34. "In addition, we provide the Osrm2 Administrator Utility, which allows
  35. the LAN administrator to monitor performance from any workstation on
  36. the same network."
  37.         The Osrm2 Server Component centrally stores and manages sampled
  38. resource statistics from Osrm2 monitors running on client servers or
  39. workstations.  These records provide the historic data used for
  40. performance analysis and capacity planning.
  41.         LAN administrators use the Osrm2 Administrator Utility, a
  42. "floating standalone" application, from any workstation that has a
  43. requester to the Osrm2 Server Component. "By making the utility free
  44. of any dynamic link library requirements the administrator can walk
  45. around with the utility on a floppy," Castellucci says, "Whenever the
  46. admin wants to monitor systems activity across the network, they can
  47. just load the Administrator, and within seconds real time statistics,
  48. graphical viewports and exceptions can be displayed".  Exceptions are
  49. generated when a user-configured performance alert (e.g. CPU usage
  50. exceeds 90%) occurs.
  51.         The Administrator utility creates graphical views of systems
  52. activity for one, or all active Osrm2 monitored nodes.  It also
  53. provides detailed applications activity information showing which
  54. applications are running, CPU usage, memory used, number of threads
  55. and I/O activity per application. In addition, it monitors exceptions,
  56. changing the colors of each node's graphical representation from
  57. green, to yellow, to red, depending on the severity of the problems.

  62.         The Osrm2 Analysis & Reporting Utility, creates presentation
  63. quality graphs and reports using the Osrm2 historical data. "The
  64. Analysis & Reporting Utility allows users to analyze system
  65. performance over a period of time to spot trends in their
  66. environment", says Castellucci,  "With this information a user can
  67. determine if adjustments are necessary to their overall systems
  68. configuration or workloads."
  69.         The Osrm2 Modeler creates base-line models of users systems
  70. from historic data, and then allows users to perform sophisticated
  71. "What if" analysis to determine optimum machine to workload
  72. requirements.  "The Modeler provides true capacity planning
  73. capabilities for the OS/2 environment", says Castellucci, "by enabling
  74. organizations to answer questions such as - What happens to overall
  75. system performance if we increase our workload, or install a faster
  76. disk at each server or add more memory?".
  77.         The Osrm2 LAN System, which requires OS/2, Named Pipes, and
  78. IBM SPM/2 (distributed feature only) began shipping September 3, 1991.
  79. Both the Osrm2 Analysis & Reporting Utility and the Osrm2 Modeler will
  80. be available 4Q91.
  81.         An Osrm2 LAN System license starts at $415 per node for a 6
  82. node configuration. Additional configurations are available as well as
  83. volume discounts.  COL is offering a 20% discount on all Osrm2 LAN
  84. ver 1.3 products purchased before December 1, 1991.
