C.O.L. DELIVERS LAN VERSION OF OS/2
PERFORMANCE MONITORING TOOLS
PURDYS, NY. -- September 4, 1991 - C.O.L. Systems, Inc. has released
the LAN version of the Osrm2 System. This system, Version 1.3,
provides resource monitoring, performance analysis and capacity
planning capabilities for multiple servers or workstations running
OS/2 over a local area network.
COL was first to provide resource monitoring and report
generation for the OS/2 environment, collecting resource information
for CPU, Disk, Memory, Swap, Interrupt, Thread, and Application
activity with the Osrm2 Real Time Monitor.
The resource monitor, previously of C.O.L. design, has been
rewritten to use the recently announced System Performance Monitor/2
Data Collection Facility (DCF) from IBM. "IBM has the handle on
resource activity as measured in the kernel," says Frank Castellucci,
president of C.O.L., " We will continue to improve upon the delivery,
manipulation, analysis and management of the data."
"We have built a central data collector and router for client
resource monitors running throughout the network," added Castellucci,
"In addition, we provide the Osrm2 Administrator Utility, which allows
the LAN administrator to monitor performance from any workstation on
the same network."
The Osrm2 Server Component centrally stores and manages sampled
resource statistics from Osrm2 monitors running on client servers or
workstations. These records provide the historic data used for
performance analysis and capacity planning.
LAN administrators use the Osrm2 Administrator Utility, a
"floating standalone" application, from any workstation that has a
requester to the Osrm2 Server Component. "By making the utility free
of any dynamic link library requirements the administrator can walk
around with the utility on a floppy," Castellucci says, "Whenever the
admin wants to monitor systems activity across the network, they can
just load the Administrator, and within seconds real time statistics,
graphical viewports and exceptions can be displayed". Exceptions are
generated when a user-configured performance alert (e.g. CPU usage
exceeds 90%) occurs.
The Administrator utility creates graphical views of systems
activity for one, or all active Osrm2 monitored nodes. It also
provides detailed applications activity information showing which
applications are running, CPU usage, memory used, number of threads
and I/O activity per application. In addition, it monitors exceptions,
changing the colors of each node's graphical representation from
green, to yellow, to red, depending on the severity of the problems.

The Osrm2 Analysis & Reporting Utility, creates presentation
quality graphs and reports using the Osrm2 historical data. "The
Analysis & Reporting Utility allows users to analyze system
performance over a period of time to spot trends in their
environment", says Castellucci, "With this information a user can
determine if adjustments are necessary to their overall systems
configuration or workloads."
The Osrm2 Modeler creates base-line models of users systems
from historic data, and then allows users to perform sophisticated
"What if" analysis to determine optimum machine to workload
requirements. "The Modeler provides true capacity planning
capabilities for the OS/2 environment", says Castellucci, "by enabling
organizations to answer questions such as - What happens to overall
system performance if we increase our workload, or install a faster
disk at each server or add more memory?".
The Osrm2 LAN System, which requires OS/2, Named Pipes, and
IBM SPM/2 (distributed feature only) began shipping September 3, 1991.
Both the Osrm2 Analysis & Reporting Utility and the Osrm2 Modeler will
be available 4Q91.
An Osrm2 LAN System license starts at $415 per node for a 6
node configuration. Additional configurations are available as well as
volume discounts. COL is offering a 20% discount on all Osrm2 LAN
ver 1.3 products purchased before December 1, 1991.
