OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
IBM Network Transport Services/2 (NTS/2) provides LAN Adapter and
Protocol Support (LAPS), a suite of network communication software.
NTS/2 is a combination of:
1. Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) compliant transport
protocol and network adapter software,
2. Novell NetWare requester enablement for OS/2,
3. OS/2 2.0 DOS support for NetBios and IEEE 802.2 APIs, and
4. Configuration Installation Distribution enabled software.
NOTE: The LAPS function was released earlier this year in the LAN
Enabler/2 Version 2.0 product.
A suite of NDIS network adapter software is shipped with NTS/2
including a series of NDIS network adapter software that has been
certified by an independent IBM certified test organization.is (See
section under Investment Protection for a description of NDIS.)
When available, new NDIS network adapter software from both
IBM and qualified OEM vendors may be down-loaded from the IBM
National Support Center Bulletin Board System.
NTS/2 enables Novell NetWare Requester for OS/2 to share a
single network adapter with NDIS based network applications, for
example, IBM OS/2 Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
(OS/2 TCP/IP), IBM OS/2 LAN Requester, and IBM OS/2 Extended Services
1.0. An example of how these applications share the adapter would be
to use a single Ethernet adapter to concurrently access both a Novell
NetWare Version 3.11 server and an IBM LAN Server Version 3.0 server.
This ability reduces the network hardware and network management
costs.
In addition to the OS/2 API support, NTS/2 provides the OS/2
2.0 virtual LAN support for the IEEE 802.2 and NetBios APIs. This
will enable DOS NetBios and IEEE 802.2 applications running in the
OS/2 2.0 DOS machine environment to share an adapter with other DOS
and OS/2 NetBios applications running on the same machine.
Integrated with NTS/2 is LAN Configuration Installation
Distribution (CID) Utility which enables the LAN Adapter and Protocol
Support (LAPS) installation diskette images to be installed and
configured at a client workstation from a code server and supports
the installation of other OS/2 CID-enabled products.
CID is a centrally managed, OS/2-based set of components that
can store, distribute, and maintain software on a NetBios-based LAN.
From one code server, a series of CID-enabled product installations
can be performed with minimal user interaction at the client
workstations.
NTS/2 LAN Configuration Installation Distribution Utility
provides a software download manager and a file redirector that allow
an administrator to automate the redirected installation and
configuration of OS/2-based products.
The installation process is performed by an individual who
initiates the installation process at a workstation and performs
other tasks such as removing/replacing diskettes when prompted and
rebooting the system when prompted. This individual would not be
required to know the responses to detailed product installation
questions.
The answers to each product installation questions are kept in
response files which contain specific responses to each installation
question. The response files are unique to each product. Each
product provides either a utility or a model which the system
administrator can use to generate the response files.
A procedure file which may be tailored is set up by a system
administrator and stored on the code server. This procedure file may
contain a series of chained commands which initiate product
installations for other CID enabled products such as IBM LAN Server
3.0. Though each product is individually enabled for CID, there is
the obvious requirement to allow the complete install to be invoked
as a single process instead of several individual processes. LAN CID
Utility provides this capability.
NTS/2 offers additional performance improvements and enhanced
network services over previous OS/2 releases containing LAPS.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT/SYSTEMS HANDLING
The LAN CID Utility provided with NTS/2 reduces workstation
installation and configuration set-up costs for any CID-enabled
product. Tailored response files generated by a system administrator
and downloaded to workstations reduce the involvement of individual
LAN users in the installation and configuration of CID-enabled
products.
Because the system administrator is responsible for the
accuracy of the installation and configuration response file
contents, a stable network environment is imposed for all the client
workstations. Installation and configuration errors are reduced,
given that the CID enabled products provide either a utility or a
model from which the administrator generates the response files which
are distributed to the client workstations.
Maintenance time is reduced with the code distribution
capabilities.
NTS/2 provides further cost reductions by enabling network
adapters to be shared with the Novell NetWare Requester for OS/2 as
noted in the Business Solutions section.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
The customer's investment in LAN software and communications
equipment is protected through the support of the industry standards
and architectures for:
o IEEE 802.2
o IEEE 802.3
o IEEE 802.5
o NetBios
o Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS).
Applications which rely upon these standards will not require
modifications to take advantage of the functions provided by IBM
NTS/2.
NDIS is a standard interface for network adapter software and
the transport protocols over which applications send data. NDIS
separates the protocol handling from hardware manipulation by
defining functions needed by transport protocols and network adapter
software. NDIS has become an industry standard providing a common
open interface that enables manufacturers of network adapters and LAN
software to communicate.
The network adapter software provides the communication
between a network adapter and the transport protocol. The main
function of the network adapter software is to support network
transmissions. The transport protocol provides the communication
between an application and the network adapter software.
Novell Requester applications will continue to run without
change, thus protecting the customer's application investment.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT
The functions described under Business Solutions enable the future
growth in a customer's LAN environment. NDIS provides for future
acquisitions of new adapter drivers as they become available and are
tested for compliance.
The Novell NetWare Requester is enabled by NTS/2. The
customer's LAN environment is expanded by allowing the Novell NetWare
Requester for OS/2 and NDIS based network applications (for example
IBM's OS/2 LAN Requester) to share a single network adapter and
concurrently access NetWare Servers (Version 3.11 and later) and IBM
LAN Servers. Existing NetWare Requester applications and utilities
will run unchanged over NDIS compliant network adapters.
The ability for DOS NetBios and IEEE 802.2 applications
running in the OS/2 2.0 DOS machine environment to share an adapter
with other applications encourages future application growth without
concern over other applications which may be competing for the
adapter.
The support of well known standards and architectures such as
IEEE 802.2 and NetBios provides a consistent application platform for
new and modified applications.
USER PRODUCTIVITY
User productivity is enhanced with the LAN Configuration Installation
Distribution Utility which enables the LAN Adapter and Protocol
Support (LAPS) installation diskette images to be installed and
configured at a client workstation from a code server along with
other CID enabled products.
CID is a centrally-managed, OS/2-based set of components that
can store, distribute, and maintain software on a NetBios-based LAN.
From one code server, a series of CID-enabled product installations
can be performed with minimal user interaction at the client
workstations.
NTS/2 provides a software download manager and a file
redirector that allow an administrator to automate the redirected
installation and configuration of OS/2-based products.
The installation process is performed by an individual who
initiates the installation process at a workstation and performs
other tasks such as removing/replacing diskettes when prompted and
rebooting the system when prompted. This individual would not be
required to know the responses to detailed product installation
questions.
OPEN ENTERPRISE: IBM NTS/2 fully supports the architectures for:
o IEEE 802.2
o IEEE 802.3
o IEEE 802.5.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
NTS/2 is a solution for a LAN environment in which there is no
enterprise host system. An example of this would be a small business
or a small, stand-alone workgroup LAN environment. It is intended to
be used for installation performed by an individual who initiates the
installation process at a workstation and performs other tasks such
as removing/replacing diskettes when prompted and rebooting the
system when prompted. NTS/2 does not provide distribution services.
NetView (R) DM/2 can be used in either the LAN environment without an
enterprise host, or in conjunction with NetView DM for MVS in an
enterprise LAN environment made up of large complex workgroup LANs
with an MVS host. In both environments, it provides an unattended
installation solution and extends the CID process over the Wide Area
Network. Distribution services, such as scheduling and
administrative tracking, are also provided by NetView DM/2.
NetView DM/2 is the only solution that provides unattended
installation as well as installation of non-CID enabled products such
as end user applications. In addition, NetView DM/2 provides the
capability to clone software across LANs.
