TITLE NETVIEW DISTRIBUTION MANAGER/2
ABSTRACT NetView (R) Distribution Manager/2 (NetView DM/2) at an Operating
System/2 (R) (OS/2 (R)) Programmable Workstation (PWS), in
conjunction with NetView Distribution Manager (NetView DM) Release 3
for MVS at a central site, will distribute data files and software;
will install software at a workstation; and later, install updates as
required. This includes IBM OS/2 operating system software as well
as application software. The workstations can be attached directly
to a host (where NetView Distribution Manager Release 3 is
installed), or on a local area network (LAN) which is attached to a
host (where NetView Distribution Manager Release 3 is installed) or
on a stand-alone LAN (without interaction with NetView Distribution
Manager Release 3).
NetView DM/2 is composed of two features, the Base and the LAN
Download Utility (LDU).
The Base feature addresses distribution and change management
functions on host-attached workstations (by communicating with
NetView Distribution Manager Release 3 using LU 6.2 and SNA/DS
protocols), and distribution of software and data to Receiver
workstations on a LAN.
The LAN Download Utility feature (IBM Customer Agreement
Distributed Feature) allows distribution of software and data from a
LAN Distributor workstation to Receiver workstations on a LAN.
The Distributor workstation must be OS/2 Extended Edition
(OS/2 EE) based and have the NetView DM/2 base feature. The Receiver
workstations may be OS/2 or DOS-based and have the NetView DM/2 LDU
feature. The Distributor/Receiver capabilities may be exploited on
LANs that have no host connection.
Planned Availability Date: June 28, 1991.

PRODUCT POSITIONING
NetView DM/2, in conjunction with NetView DM Release 3 for
MVS, provides:
o A centrally managed alternative to diskettes for distributing and
installing PWS system and application software (vendor and
customer) and data files.
o Support of a variety of PWS enterprise network configurations,
such as:
- Single OS/2 PWSs directly connected to a host System/370 (TM)
or System/390 (TM).
- Single OS/2 PWSs connected to a host System/370 or System/390
via other OS/2s acting as intermediate nodes.
The intermediate node function of NetView DM/2 is a
means to reduce the transmission overhead on NetView DM for
MVS (because of the fan-out capabilities fewer copies of the
same object need to be transmitted) and to improve the
transmission line utilization.
- OS/2 PWSs in a LAN which is connected to a host System/370 or
System/390 either directly or via another OS/2 providing
Distributor functions for the LAN.
NetView DM/2 Distributors for the LAN can be any OS/2
PWS in the LAN. The supported NetView DM/2 Receivers can
either be OS/2 or DOS PWSs.
o Distribution and installation processes initiated by the NetView
DM user at the host.
o Distribution and installation processes controlled from the host
and initiated by the OS/2 end user, if an enabling application
running on top of the NetView DM Release 3 Distribution and
Change Control Application Programming Interface (D&CC API) is
developed by the customer.
o Tracking of distributed and installed software, software updates,
and data files kept at the host for PWSs with the NetView DM/2
base feature installed.
o Tracking of software installations and software-update
installations initiated by the PWS end user is kept at the host,
even if delivery/installation is via diskettes. The PWS must
have the NetView DM/2 base feature installed.
NetView DM/2 also provides support for software distribution
and change management in stand-alone or interconnected LANs with no
interaction with NetView DM. This support includes:
o Local maintenance of system and application software at the PWS
having Distributor functions for the LAN.
o User data and software distribution to/from the PWS having
Distributor functions for the LAN.
o First-time installation of system and application software at the
PWSs having Receiver functions for the LAN.
o Software and user data download from the PWS Distributor to the
PWS Receivers.

DESCRIPTION
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
NetView DM/2 enables automated distribution and change management
functions to host-connected OS/2 workstations, as well as to OS/2 or
DOS workstations in host-connected or stand-alone LANs. NetView DM/2
exploits LU6.2 protocols (for communication between the
host-connected workstation and NetView Distribution Manager at the
host) and implements a wide range of SNA/DS, SNA/FS, and SNA/MS-CM
functions, which altogether provide comprehensive network change
management functionality.
NetView DM/2 provides:
o First-time installation and subsequent updates of system and
application software by implementing the following change
management functions:
- Installation of a software package
- Acceptance/removal of the results of an installation
- Activation of the installed object
- Initiation of a command procedure through remote scheduling
o System, application software and user data distribution by
supporting NetView DM requests to:
- SEND a data object to be stored as an OS/2 file
- RETRIEVE an OS/2 file
- DELETE an OS/2 file
o Download of system, application software and user data to OS/2 or
DOS Receiver workstations in a LAN.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
NetView Distribution Manager/2 enhances business solutions by
facilitating data exchange between a System/370 (TM) or System/390
(TM) host and enterprise workstation networks. Systems and
application software maintenance will benefit from the automated
operations allowed by this new product of the NetView DM family.
(TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
USER PRODUCTIVITY
NetView DM/2 users will benefit largely from the automated ways of
receiving changes to software and data files. Furthermore, NetView
DM/2 provides:
o A command-level interface to allow user procedures to issue
commands to:
- Create a change package
- Send an object to NetView DM Release 3 or to another NetView
DM/2
- Control the activity of NetView DM/2
- Access the File Services catalog
o An interactive interface (Systems Application Architecture (R)
(SAA (TM)) CUA compliant) which supports, through dialogs, the
above services.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT
NetView DM/2 enables network growth by allowing management and
control of workstations with automated and unattended operations for
distribution and change management functions.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
NetView DM/2 protects the customer investments by using SNA
architectures and well-established operating systems and software
environments.

STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION
In the future, IBM intends to bring NetView Distribution Manager for
MVS, NetView Distribution Manager/2 and SAA Delivery Manager into a
closer working relationship in order to provide a comprehensive
enterprise-wide distribution and change management product family.
These new capabilities will be based on the administrative and end
user interface capabilities of SAA Delivery Manager and the
distribution and control capabilities of NetView Distribution
Manager.
In addition, IBM intends to extend the support of centrally
controlled software distribution and management offered by NetView
DM/2 to LAN-attached OS/2 and DOS clients. This will provide full
change management reporting and recovery capability to the client
workstation. This support will be available for both host-attached
and stand-alone LANs.
