  14.            IBM MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION MANAGER/2
  15.            USER PRODUCTIVITY:  The key benefit of multimedia is an enhanced
  16.            quality of information and communication.  When audio and image are
  17.            combined with text and graphics, customers can access richer forms of
  18.            information, and communication becomes more effective.  Multimedia
  19.            Presentation Manager/2 enables this increase in productivity.
  20.                   The Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 system supports the
  21.            playback of digital audio files and the recording of audio signals
  22.            into digital format.  This facilitates the creation of online
  23.            presentations, such as an image "slide show" with accompanying audio.
  24.            Such presentations have many uses in industrial training, education,
  25.            merchandising and business presentation environments.  Multimedia
  26.            Presentation Manager/2 also enables audio annotation in conventional
  27.            productivity applications, such as spreadsheets and word processors.
  28.                   Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 recognizes a variety of
  29.            audio and image data types.  The user can concentrate on the value of
  30.            the information itself, and not be concerned with the data type.
  31.            This also increases the availability of different types and formats
  32.            of information to the end user, which in turn increases productivity.
  33.                   The Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 user interface conforms
  34.            to the 1991 Common User Access (TM) architecture.  A standard user
  35.            interface allows users to control the data in a consistent manner.
  36.            This includes, for example, playing and rewinding audio clips and
  37.            adjusting and muting volume.  Users can be more effective with every
  38.            product that uses these interface functions, since the methods for
  39.            controlling their data is consistent across the different products.
  40.                   Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 provides synchronization
  41.            support by taking advantage of the multitasking capabilities in OS/2
  42.            (R) 2.0.  For example, multiple audio streams can be played back
  43.            simultaneously, and the system will keep them synchronized
  44.            automatically.  This is useful for playing background music with a
  45.            foreground voice-over or for mixing different audio tracks.
  46.                   Finally, the installation and online information of Multimedia
  47.            Presentation Manager/2 makes each user's job easier.  The graphical
  48.            install program is designed to be a "one-button" process if the user
  49.            so desires.  However, if customization is required, the user can
  50.            select components, which can save disk space and available memory at
  51.            run time.  Context-sensitive helps are included throughout Multimedia
  52.            Presentation Manager/2 to enable access to the most up-to-date
  53.            product information.

  68.            Presentation Manager/2 works to protect investments.  The open

  73.            customers' current investments.
  74.                   Investments related to compact disc are protected in several
  75.            ways.  CDs are an excellent vehicle for program distribution, large
  76.            databases, audio, animation, and eventually, full motion video.
  77.            Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 support includes CD-ROM, CD-DA, and
  78.            CD-ROM/XA.
  79.            BUSINESS SOLUTIONS:  Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 will be an
  80.            important component of every customers business goals.  Since
  81.            multimedia increases the effectiveness of information and
  82.            communication, Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 facilitates decision
  83.            making within the enterprise.  With standard user interface controls
  84.            and productivity applets, users are more efficient and training costs
  85.            are reduced.  The open, extendable architecture of Multimedia

  88.            SYSTEM MANAGEMENT:  The Multimedia Presentation Manager/2
  89.            installation makes system setup easier.  The default, one-button
  90.            approach optimizes the install process.  The selective install
  91.            optimizes disk space and available run-time memory.
  92.                   Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 assists the user in system
  93.            management by providing several small system applications called
  94.            applets.  The applets are described in the TECHNICAL INFORMATION
  95.            section.  The system applets provide a consistent method of changing
  96.            device and system settings.  The user simply opens Multimedia Setup
  97.            notebook, selects the device and modifies the settings as necessary.
  98.            This is also consistent with the methods used by OS/2 to modify
  99.            settings.

  101.            BUSINESS SOLUTIONS:  The functions of Multimedia Presentation
  102.            Manager/2 and the components of the Multimedia Presentation Manager
  103.            Toolkit/2 help software developers achieve their business goals,
  104.            namely to produce quality multimedia products with efficiency.
  105.                   The Media Control Interface and the Multimedia I/O functions
  106.            of Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 make device and data
  107.            independence part of every product.  Code need not be written to
  108.            accommodate every possible end user configuration, as this is handled
  109.            by Multimedia Presentation Manager/2.  By using Multimedia
  110.            Presentation Manager/2, products can exploit the functions of today
  111.            and adapt to those of tomorrow.

  120.            Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 system.  Also, samples may be used
  121.            freely within the product and adapted to suit the needs of the

  123.            USER PRODUCTIVITY:  Product developers can increase productivity
  124.            through Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 and the Multimedia
  125.            Presentation Manager Toolkit/2.  This starts with product
  126.            installation by CD-ROM.  Also, Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 APIs
  127.            provide comprehensive multimedia device and data handling functions,
  128.            and the Toolkit includes sample programs that use these APIs.  As a
  129.            result, less development time is needed to manage the multimedia
  130.            aspect of the product.  Also, online documentation means faster
  131.            access to product details.
  132.            INVESTMENT PROTECTION AND GROWTH ENABLEMENT:  Software developers'
  133.            investments are protected by Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 and
  134.            the Toolkit through support for a common programming interface and

  222.            PLANNING INFORMATION
  223.            IBM MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION MANAGER/2:  The following functions are
  224.            available in Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 and are comparable to
  225.            functions in multimedia products already in the marketplace.
  226.            o   Media Control Interface Support
  227.                       The Media Control Interface provides a consistent device
  228.                independent API between different Media devices, as initially
  229.                specified by IBM/Microsoft.  The Media Control Interface
  230.                activates Media Control Drivers that communicate with the
  231.                multimedia device drivers.  The Media Control Drivers tell the
  232.                device drivers what to do with the multimedia data.  Examples of
  233.                these Media Control Interface commands include open and close
  234.                device, play, record, rewind, stop, pause, seek and query status.
  235.            o   Waveform Audio Support
  236.                       Provides the Media Control Driver for playing and
  237.                recording audio data.
  238.            o   CD Digital Audio Support
  239.                       Provides the Media Control Driver for playing and
  240.                controlling standard CD Digital Audio.  The digital audio may be
  241.                played through a CD-ROM drive internal DAC and out of the CD-ROM
  242.                earphone jack, or streamed to a compatible audio adapter.
  243.            o   MIDI Sequencing and Synthesizer support
  244.                       Provides for Media Control of audio adapters that provide
  245.                internal synthesizer support of MIDI data.
  246.            o   Amp/Mixer Support
  247.                       Provides the Media Control of hardware supported mixing of
  248.                audio streams from two sources.  An example of this function is
  249.                mixing a mono-wave track for background music and a foreground
  250.                voice over narration.  It also provides control over the audio
  251.                adapter's settings, such as treble, bass, volume, balance and
  252.                pitch.  In addition, it can be used to vary volume or balance
  253.                over time.
  254.            o   Videodisc control
  255.                       Provides for Media Control of an analog videodisc.  The
  256.                Media Control Driver for the Pioneer LDV8000, 4400, and 4200
  257.                series will be included.
  258.            o   Multimedia I/O Manager
  259.                       Provides the basis of the Multimedia I/O (MMIO) subsystem,
  260.                which allows application independence from data object format.
  261.                The native data format types were initially specified by the
  262.                Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF), by IBM/Microsoft.  In
  263.                addition, MMIO offers support for installable data handlers.
  264.            o   M-Audio Capture And Playback Adapter Device Driver (including DOS
  265.                Virtual Machine AudioDD (Audio VDD) Interface Support)
  266.                       This is the physical device driver for the M-ACPA.  It
  267.                provides the AudioDD interface to OS/2 and DOS Virtual Machines
  268.                programs, as well as the physical device driver interface for
  269.                M-ACPA to the Audio and MIDI Media Control Drivers.
  270.                NOTE: With the Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 Audio VDD and
  271.                the Windows Multimedia Extensions installed as part of the WIN
  272.                OS/2 environment, then Windows Multimedia applications and
  273.                Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 applications can run in a
  274.                single OS/2 2.0 system.
  275.            o   Control Applets
  276.                -   MM Setup
  277.                           Allows the user to easily modify and fine tune his
  278.                    Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 configuration, associate
  279.                    file types with multimedia devices, and control the system
  280.                    close captioning flag.  If an application uses audio
  281.                    narration, it can query the state of the system close
  282.                    captioning to decide whether close captioning is required.
  283.            o   Media Player Applets
  284.                       These applets are used to play different kinds of audio,
  285.                specifically digital audio files, MIDI files, and audio compact
  286.                discs.  Each player is installed automatically if the system
  287.                configuration supports that type of audio.  They can control any
  288.                audio device which supports simple Media Control commands like
  289.                play, stop, rewind, and seek.
  290.                       Digital audio can also be recorded through a microphone or
  291.                line-in jack.  The recording format is 8-Bit PCM 22Khz mono,
  292.                equivalent to FM Stereo.  These digital audio files can be used
  293.                by products that use audio.
  294.            o   MM Installation
  295.                       This program installs the Multimedia Presentation
  296.                Manager/2 diskettes and the Multimedia Presentation Manager
  297.                Toolkit/2.  It is a CUA (TM) application that minimizes the
  298.                requirements for user interaction via the OS/2 workplace shell
  299.                object oriented interface.  It also provides the user with the
  300.                capability of installing Media Control Drivers and hardware
  301.                physical device drivers provided by other sources without having
  302.                to re-install the entire system.
  303.                   The following multimedia functions are available only on the
  304.            OS/2 multimedia offering.  Many of these functions are feasible only
  305.            due to the advantages of the OS/2 operating system base.  The nature
  306.            of OS/2, being a preemptive multitasking operating system, with
  307.            multithreaded processing support, offers performance advantages to
  308.            the multimedia platform, where extremely high throughput rates are
  309.            required and multiple multimedia data streams are being processed
  310.            concurrently.  In addition, the OS/2 multimedia product offers the
  311.            programming advantage of the flat memory model, which alleviates the
  312.            difficulties of managing segments for large programs and data object
  313.            handling characteristic of multimedia applications.
  314.            o   Synchronization/Streaming Programming Interface
  315.                       This provides the multimedia applications with control for
  316.                synchronizing multimedia data streams (such as audio and video).
  317.                It also provides the multimedia applications finer control of the
  318.                flow of his data streams to the media devices.  Since the
  319.                Sync/Stream Manager uses the Fast Threads of OS/2 V2.0,
  320.                applications can have real time control of multimedia devices,
  321.                without impacting the system.  The Sync/Stream Manager can also
  322.                be multi-tasked.
  323.            o   Control Applet -- Volume Control
  324.                       Allows a user to control audio output level on a system
  325.                wide basis, or to completely mute the output.
  326.            o   CD-ROM/XA interleaved data and compressed audio support
  327.                       This provides the Media Control Driver for splitting
  328.                CD-ROM/XA interleaved data and compressed audio, and plays the
  329.                audio stream through the audio adapter, while passing the data or
  330.                video stream to an application program.
  331.            o   Extendable Data Object Format Support
  332.                       MMIO data handlers, either from Multimedia Presentation
  333.                Manager/2 Release 1 or from an application provider, can be
  334.                installed into the system as an extension to MMIO.  In addition
  335.                to RIFF support, Release 1 will provide MMIO Handlers for the
  336.                following data file formats:
  337.                -   PCM, ADPCM Audio Files
  338.                -   AVC Audio Files
  339.                -   MIDI Format 0 and Format 1
  340.                -   OS/2 Bitmaps
  341.                -   M-Motion Still Images
  342.                -   AVC Images
  343.                           Data handlers can be written to support additional
  344.                    MMIO controls for data translations.  With these controls,
  345.                    and the appropriate support in the data handler to perform
  346.                    the translation, an application can work with media data
  347.                    either in its native form, or in a media format native to
  348.                    Multimedia Presentation Manager/2.
  349.            o   Multimedia Data Converter Applet
  350.                       This Applet provides a user interface to the installed
  351.                MMIO data handlers with translation support enabled, allowing a
  352.                user to convert his data files between the various data types for
  353.                which support is installed.
  354.            o   Standard Multimedia PM Controls
  355.                       Multimedia PM Controls, knobs (or circular sliders) and
  356.                animated pushbuttons are made available to all applications.
  357.            o   Publication:  Getting Started -- Introduces components of the
  358.                Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 and assists with installation.

  375.                    interface of MCI.  Also, the string test can be used as a
  376.                    powerful debugging tool when developing media drivers.
  377.                -   Clock Utility -- Displays an analog clock that chimes.
  378.                    Illustrates the use of memory playlist to create sound
  379.                    effects dynamically.  Also, illustrates the use of the
  380.                    Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 closed captioning flag.
  381.                -   AVC I/O Procedure Installation Utility -- Illustrates how an
  382.                    application installs and de-installs a custom MMIO procedure.
  383.                -   Case Converter I/O Proc -- This is a simple I/O procedure
  384.                    that will convert characters from uppercase to lower and vise
  385.                    versa.  It illustrates the concept of writing a custom I/O
  386.                    Proc and can be used as a template.

  388.                    media control driver to the media control interface of
