  5. ABSTRACT          The IBM LAN Enabler 2.0 offers the OS/2 (R) Requester, LAN
  6.            Support Program and DOS LAN Requester (DLR), identical in function to
  7.            the requesters included with the IBM OS/2 LAN Server 2.0, in a
  8.            separate licensed program.  Connectivity to 80286 and 80386
  9.            workstations is enabled, including OS/2 LAN Server 2.0, Microsoft (1)
  10.            LAN Manager 2.0 and other compatible servers.  This allows customers
  11.            using IBM OS/2 2.0 to access NetBios, NDIS-based and 802.2-based
  12.            subsystems at an economical price.
  13.                   IBM OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 Softcopy Library provides the
  14.            publications for OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 on 3.5-inch media.  These
  15.            publications are for display using BookMaster (R) READ products.

  38.            DESCRIPTION
  39.            EXPLOITATION
  40.            IBM LAN Enabler Version 2.0 provides customers with a LAN enablement
  41.            option for OS/2 SE 1.3 and OS/2 2.0.  This allows customers running
  42.            OS/2 to run NetBios, NDIS and 802.2 applications without acquiring
  43.            OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 or Extended Services/2.
  44.                   The OS/2 LAN Requester included in this program package
  45.            provides connectivity to servers from both 80286 and 80386
  46.            architecture workstations, including IBM LAN Server 2.0, Microsoft
  47.            LAN Manager 2.0, and other compatible servers.
  48.            FUNCTIONALITY
  49.            The Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) is a standard
  50.            interface for network adapter drivers and protocol drivers.  NDIS
  51.            separates protocol handling from hardware manipulation by defining
  52.            functions that protocol drivers and network adapter drivers need.
  53.            NDIS has become an industry standard, providing a common open
  54.            interface that enables different manufacturers of network adapters
  55.            and LAN software to communicate.
  56.                   A network adapter driver provides the communication between a
  57.            network adapter and a protocol.  The main function of the network
  58.            adapter driver is to support network transmissions.  A protocol
  59.            driver provides the communication between an application and a
  60.            network adapter driver.
  61.                   LAN Adapter and Protocol Support, network communication
  62.            software, is a combination of NDIS-compliant protocols drivers, API
  63.            support software, and configuration and installation software for
  64.            these drivers.  LAN Adapter and Protocol Support is included in both
  65.            IBM Extended Services for OS/2, IBM OS/2 LAN Server Version 2.0 and
  66.            in IBM LAN Enabler Version 2.0.  It consists of the network
  67.            communication software necessary to support the LAN connectivity
  68.            needed by Extended Services/2 and OS/2 LAN Server 2.0.
  69.                   In addition to the OS/2 API support, LAN Adapter and Protocol
  70.            Support provides OS/2 2.0 Virtual LAN Support.  This will enable
  71.            existing DOS NetBios applications (used in LAN applications) running
  72.            in the OS/2 2.0 Virtual DOS Machine environment to share an adapter
  73.            with other DOS and OS/2 NetBios applications running on the same
  74.            machine.
  75.                   A suite of NDIS network adapter drivers is shipped with
  76.            Extended Services/2, OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 and now IBM LAN Enabler
  77.            Version 2.0.  New NDIS network adapter drivers from both IBM and
  78.            qualified OEM vendors are made available by downloading from the IBM
  79.            National Support Center Bulletin Board System.

  179.            implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
  180.            appropriate controls in application systems and communication

  182. ORDERING   ORDERING INFORMATION
  183.                   Orders for new licenses will be accepted now.  Unless a later
  184.            date is specified, orders entered prior to June 5, 1992, will be
  185.            assigned a schedule date of June 5, 1992.  Shipment of orders will
  186.            commence on June 5, 1992.  Orders entered after June 5, 1992, will be
  187.            scheduled for shipment on the Friday following the week of order
  188.            entry or as soon thereafter as supply permits.
