  8.      LAS VEGAS, Oct. 21 . . . IBM today announced two offerings of OS/2*
  9.      LAN Server 2.0, providing major advances in helping customers build,
  10.      administer and adapt their local area networks to suit their business
  11.      needs.

  13.      The new server products offer significantly improved performance,
  14.      enhanced security and fault tolerance for running mission-critical
  15.      applications at the desktop, more flexible support for different types
  16.      of local area networks, and a rich set of new functions to help the
  17.      LAN administrator with a new, tiered pricing model.
  18.  
  19.      The new server also offers customers a choice between both an entry
  20.      and an advanced package.  And OS/2 LAN Server now comes as an inte-
  21.      grated solution that includes all server functions, requesters and
  22.      necessary LAN transport facilities.  LAN Server 2.0 can provide base
  23.      OS/2 client support for roughly a third the cost of LAN Server 1.3.

  25.      "OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 makes workgroup networks and enterprise LANs
  26.      extremely productive environments," said Art Olbert, Personal Systems
  27.      director of LAN Systems.  "IBM will grow LAN Server with our LAN
  28.      systems strategy, keeping pace with our customers' rapidly expanding
  29.      demands."

  31.                          ADVANCED PACKAGE/ENTRY PACKAGE

  33.      The Advanced Package of OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 provides dramatic perform-
  34.      ance improvements through the enhanced High Performance File System
  35.      (HPFS), which exploits the power of 386SX** and higher processors.
  36.      End users can expect to see a response time up to twice as fast as
  37.      that available on OS/2 LAN Server 1.3 when they access files through
  38.      the new high-performance server.

  40.      The Advanced Package also provides significant fault-tolerance
  41.      protection, so customers can use their departmental networks with
  42.      greater confidence that their information is protected.  This
  43.      protection is achieved through disk mirroring and disk duplexing.

  45.      The Entry Package of OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 is an excellent choice for
  46.      customers seeking significant cost advantages in building departmental
  47.      or small business local area networks.

  49.      Both Server 2.0 products support OS/2 (1.3 and 2.0), DOS and
  50.      Windows*** clients, as well as supporting Token-Ring, Ethernet and PC
  51.      Network LANs. Either package can be run with or without Extended
  52.      Services.

  54.      In response to the need for flexibility and openness in building
  55.      customer networks, LAN Server 2.0 can also run on the :hardware of
  56.      selected manufacturers and a broad range of other vendor hardware
  57.      products.

  59.      Both server packages also offer many other new advantages:

  61.           -- Customers won't have to wait to integrate many new
  62.              adapter technologies with their server software because
  63.              of OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 support for the Network Device
  64.              Interface Specification (NDIS).  Now LAN Server can
  65.              support the wide array of NDIS-compliant LAN adapters
  66.              available or under development in the industry today.

  68.           -- For businesses that require sharing of unique resources,
  69.              such as accounting information, a single server can link
  70.              up to four departmental LANs, and a single client can
  71.              participate in up to four LANs, by using four adapter
  72.              cards.

  75.              network is achieved for both server packages through
  76.              improved support for LAN adapters and faster local area
  77.              network protocols.

  88.                           NEW MANAGEMENT CAPABILITIES

  90.      As businesses are more dependent on local area networks, the need to
  91.      manage LANs effectively becomes increasingly important.  OS/2 LAN
  92.      Server 2.0 offers a number of features to help LAN administrators and
  93.      users work more effectively.  Examples include:

  95.           -- Enhanced support for OS/2 and DOS medialess PCs. This is
  96.              important for customers who want improved levels of
  97.              security and reduced cost.

  99.           -- Improved problem management -- such as notifying network
  100.              administrators of printer and disk storage problems.

  102.      OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 Advanced Package costs $2,295.00 with a $75.00 per
  103.      client cost.  While it supports all the new OS/2 2.0 functions as
  104.      clients, it requires OS/2 1.3 Standard Edition as base software for
  105.      the server machine.

  107.      OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 Entry Package costs $795.00 with a $75.00 per
  108.      client fee.  This product may use OS/2 SE 1.3, or OS/2 2.0 as its base
  109.      operating system software.

  111.      For the single fee of $75.00, a client workstation can be any or all
  112.      of the following: an OS/2 2.0, or OS/2 1.3 client; a DOS 3.3 or above
  113.      client; a DOS Windows 3.0 client.  Both packages will be available in
  114.      April of 1992.
