  9. TITLE      EASEL FOR OPERATING SYSTEM/2 EXTENDED EDITION
  10. ABSTRACT          Easel (1) for Operating System/2 (TM) Extended Edition (Easel
  11.            OS/2 (TM) EE) consists of two IBM licensed programs that provide a
  12.            highly productive programming facility and an operating environment
  13.            to assist customers in migrating to programmable workstations from
  14.            terminals.  These products are Easel for OS/2 Extended Edition
  15.            Development system and Easel for OS/2 Extended Edition Runtime
  16.            facility.
  17.                   The Easel OS/2 EE Development system runs on an IBM OS/2
  18.            Extended Edition programmable workstation.  Programmers can use the
  19.            Easel OS/2 EE Development system to write new graphical front-end
  20.            applications for existing terminal-based host applications.  An
  21.            interactive common user access (CUA) screen layout facility based on
  22.            the OS/2 Presentation Manager (TM) is provided to assist programmers
  23.            in developing application screens.  The Easel OS/2 EE Development
  24.            system also provides language statements to access host screen
  25.            contents via the terminal emulation facilities of the OS/2
  26.            Communications Manager.  Additional application logic can be provided
  27.            in the front-end application, while the host applications can
  28.            continue to run unchanged.  These facilities assist programmers in
  29.            developing applications that can conform with the CUA guidelines of
  30.            Systems Application Architecture (TM) (SAA).
  31.                   The Easel OS/2 EE Runtime facility provides the capability to
  32.            execute these new front-end applications on an IBM OS/2 Extended
  33.            Edition programmable workstation.  Users at these workstations can
  34.            benefit from consistent CUA graphics and cooperative processing,
  35.            while users at terminals can operate without change.

  58. OVERVIEW   HIGHLIGHTS
  59.            o   Provides a highly productive programming facility to assist
  60.                customers in migrating the user interface of host applications

  63.                    Manager in IBM OS/2 Extended Edition that provides guidance

  75.            DESCRIPTION
  76.                   Easel OS/2 EE provides facilities to develop and execute
  77.            graphical front ends to existing host 3270 and asynchronous
  78.            applications.  These graphical front ends can conform to the
  79.            guidelines for SAA CUA and execute on a programmable workstation
  80.            (PWS) using IBM Operating System/2 Extended Edition Version 1.1.
  81.            This Easel OS/2 EE offering consists of two separately licensed
  82.            programs:  the Easel OS/2 EE Development system and the Easel OS/2 EE
  83.            Runtime facility.
  84.                   The Easel OS/2 EE Development system operates on an IBM OS/2
  85.            Extended Edition workstation, and provides the following:
  86.            o   An interactive CUA layout facility to define the graphical
  87.                application screens.  As Easel OS/2 EE is based on the
  88.                Presentation Manager in OS/2 Extended Edition Version 1.1, there
  89.                are some exceptions to the new CUA guidelines.  The exceptions
  90.                will be documented in the EASEL OS/2 EE DEVELOPER'S GUIDE
  91.            o   A high level language that is event-driven and block-structured.
  92.                Trace and debug facilities are included.  This language is
  93.                readily learned by programmers who are familiar with a high-level
  94.                programming language like COBOL, and provides capability for
  95.                graphics and communications programming.  Programmers use this
  96.                language in conjunction with the screens defined by use of the
  97.                interactive layout facility to create applications that can
  98.                conform to CUA guidelines
  99.            o   A FIELDS tool to analyze the 3270 data streams used by the
  100.                existing host application.  Host graphic data is not supported.
  101.                   The Easel OS/2 EE Runtime facility is required on an OS/2
  102.            Extended Edition PWS to execute the front-end application that has
  103.            been developed by the development system.  No modifications or
  104.            changes are needed to the host applications.
  105.                   Many installed applications using host-attached terminals can
  106.            be enhanced by Easel OS/2 EE programmed front ends on an OS/2
  107.            Extended Edition PWS.  Easel OS/2 EE serves as a translator between
  108.            the PWS and the host application, giving the application a whole new
  109.            look from the perspective of the end user.  These front-end
  110.            applications can apply new CUA screen design concepts that may
  111.            provide more information with fewer panels.  The data can be
  112.            displayed as colorful, graphical, easy-to-understand information.
  113.            Application users can use a PWS with a keyboard and/or a mouse to
  114.            interact with host applications.  For example, users can select from
  115.            information in scrollable windows, rather than having to keyboard
  116.            codes from printed lists.  With Easel OS/2 EE, the mainframe
  117.            application can be made available to PWS users in a simple,
  118.            controlled way, making it easier for end users to learn and to use
  119.            applications.
  120.                   Information can be displayed in business graphics form by the
  121.            Easel OS/2 EE application by use of the routines provided.  These
  122.            routines enhance programmer productivity by supporting the display of
  123.            business information in more meaningful forms.
  124.            NATIONAL LANGUAGE SUPPORT:  Easel OS/2 EE is enabled for National
  125.            Language Support for single byte, left-to-right language
  126.            applications.  Easel OS/2 EE meets the requirements for selection of
  127.            keyboards and code pages for languages in Europe, Canada, and Latin
  128.            America.  Application programmers may find that Easel OS/2 EE offers
  129.            a technique to support translated host applications by providing
  130.            front-end applications in different national languages.
  131.            STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION
  132.            It is IBM's intent to support the Easel for OS/2 EE product on
  133.            Version 1.2 of OS/2 Extended Edition.  In addition, IBM intends to
  134.            support the 5250 Workstation feature via the Communications Manager.

  155.            Extended Edition Version 1.1 and supports the devices supported by
  156.            IBM OS/2 Extended Edition 1.1 with the following limitations:
  157.            o   Communications support is provided by the Communications Manager
  158.                -   Asynchronous communication is supported by ACDI
  159.                -   IBM 3270 communication is supported by EHLLAPI
  160.                -   No other terminal emulator support is provided at this time.
  161.            o   Display support is provided for the following adapters and
  162.                displays for the Personal Computer AT (R) and PC XT (TM) 286:
  163.                -   IBM Enhanced Graphics Adapter with the IBM Enhanced Color
  164.                    Display
  165.                -   Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Display Adapter with one of
  166.                    the following displays:

  199.            PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS:  Easel OS/2 EE requires IBM Operating
  200.            System/2 Extended Edition Version 1.1.  The IBM OS/2 Extended Edition
  201.            Version 1.1 Programmer Toolkit is not required for use of the Easel
  202.            OS/2 EE Development facility, but it is recommended for customers who
  203.            intend to extend the capabilities of Easel OS/2 EE programs.
  204.            PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:  Refer to Programming Announcements
  205.            287-100, dated April 4, 1987, and 288-690, dated November 11, 1988,
  206.            for factors that impact performance of OS/2 Extended Edition systems
  207.            and applications.
  208.            PLANNING INFORMATION
  209.                   For information on the installation and use of Easel OS/2 EE
  210.            refer to the EASEL OS/2 EE GENERAL INFORMATION MANUAL.
  211.                   Application Systems Division (ASD) Product Support Operations
  212.            will respond, on a call-back basis, to questions concerning the
  213.            installability, use, operation and function of the program in this
  214.            announcement.  Calls may be placed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

  220.            available in a 3.5-inch (1.44Mb) double-sided diskette version and a

  228.            SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
  229.                   The Easel OS/2 EE product uses the security and auditability
  230.            features of the applicable prerequisite hardware and software.
  231.                   User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
  232.            implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
  233.            appropriate controls in application systems and communication
  234.            facilities.
  235. ORDERING   ORDERING INFORMATION
  236.                   Orders for new licenses will be accepted now.  Unless a later
  237.            date is specified, orders entered prior to August 25, 1989, will be
  238.            scheduled for shipment September 1, 1989.
  239.                   To order, specify the program name, order type, quantity and
  240.            media.  The available order types are as follows:

  243.            TERMS AND CONDITIONS
  244.            LICENSING:  Easel OS/2 EE is licensed under the terms and conditions
  245.            of the IBM Program License Agreement.  A copy of the agreement is
  246.            included in the program package.

  261.            VOLUME DISCOUNT:  Volume discounting is available under the terms and

  264.            Computers/System Programs for Qualified Educational
  265.            Institutions/Hospitals.  The Easel OS/2 EE Development system is
  266.            included in the Eligible Program List for Personal Computers/System
  267.            Programs and Personal Computers/System Programs for Qualified
  268.            Educational Institutions/Hospitals.  It may be added to the
  269.            applicable category in the space provided on the Eligible Program
  270.            List.  Program Packages are included in Category A under 5871-BBB.
  271.            Additional licenses are available only under the VPA and are included
  272.            in Category A under 5872-BBB.
  273.            TESTING PERIOD:  Program Packages:  Two months for up to three copies
  274.            of each eligible program ordered under a VPA Addendum.  Additional

  276.            EDUCATIONAL ALLOWANCE:  A 20 percent educational allowance is
