TITLE IBM DATABASE 2 OS/2 -- VERSION 1 AND IBM SAA DISTRIBUTED DATABASE
CONNECTION SERVICES/2 -- VERSION 2
ABSTRACT Today, IBM is announcing two new relational database products
for the 32-bit OS/2 (R) operating system environment:
o IBM DATABASE 2 (TM) OS/2 -- Version 1 (DB2 (R)/2 Version 1)
o IBM SAA (TM) Distributed Database Connection Services/2 --
Version 2 (DDCS/2 Version 2)
Single-User and Client/Server versions of both DB2/2 Version 1
and DDCS/2 Version 2 are provided.
IBM DATABASE 2 OS/2 -- Version 1 is a relational database
management system and a member of the IBM Relational Database family
of products along with DB2 (R) for MVS, SQL/DS (TM) for VM and VSE,
and SQL/400 (R) for OS/400 (R). DB2/2 Version 1 extends IBM's SAA
relational database technology to the single-user workstation and
client/server LAN environment and is a key component in IBM's
Information Warehouse (TM) framework.
DB2/2 Version 1 supports access to OS/2 database servers from
OS/2, DOS and DOS Windows (1) database client workstations. DB2/2
Version 1 is a 32-bit product and includes the functions previously
provided in the OS/2 Extended Services 1.0 Database Manager products.
DB2/2 Version 1 also includes additional new functions that are
focused on application portability, DB2 compatibility, SQL and
industry standards compliance, new connectivity options, integrity
enhancements, reliability, availability, systems management, and
performance.
DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 provide relational
database access solutions for line of business, decision support, and
online transaction processing applications that may reside on a LAN
or in a host environment. Application programming interfaces (APIs)
and tools are provided for programmers as well as a database command
line processor. Query Manager is also provided for use by both
novice and experienced users.
DDCS/2 Version 2 products provide workstation application
access to enterprise data. DDCS/2 Version 2 provides the ability to
develop and run application programs that connect to, access, and
update host databases from OS/2, DOS and DOS Windows database client
workstations. The same database clients installed to access DB2/2
Version 1 database servers on the LAN can also access and update host
databases through DDCS/2 Version 2. To a user or application
program, the host database can be thought of as an extension of the
OS/2 database server capabilities.
DDCS/2 Version 2 is a 32-bit product and includes the same
functionality provided in DDCS/2 1.0. Connectivity to Database 2
(DB2) Version 2 Release 3, Structured Query Language/Data Services
(SQL/DS) Version 3 Release 3, and Operating System/400 (R) (OS/400)
Version 2 Release 1.1 host relational databases is supported.
DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 can be acquired
separately, but used in conjunction with the new IBM Communications
Manager/2 products also being announced today.
DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 are designed to run in
conjunction with IBM OS/2 Version 2.0 with Servicepak Level XR06055,
or later. DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 are also designed to
run on selected IBM and non-IBM hardware that support OS/2 2.0 with
Servicepak Level XR06055, or later.
The first customer shipment of DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2
Version 2 will be by March 26, 1993, to an already selected set of

DESCRIPTION
GROWTH ENABLEMENT
The IBM OS/2 operating system is a key component of IBM's software
strategy for the enterprise. IBM DATABASE 2 OS/2 -- Version 1 and
IBM SAA Distributed Database Connection Services/2 -- Version 2 are
IBM's relational database products for the workstation and
client/server LAN environment. They are key players in IBM's OS/2
system integration platform.
Today's businesses are demanding improved access to data; data
that is located across the office, the country, and around the world.
Customers are making decisions on where is the best place to store
data and how can users quickly get access to it. How should they
fill the gap between host production databases and simplistic desktop
file systems? New applications need to be developed and legacy data
needs to be preserved.
DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 have been designed for
growth and can answer the requirements for host database access as
well as providing support for building new line-of-business
applications for the client/server LAN environment. Data access and
data sharing are of primary importance in both of these environments.
Because DB2/2 Version 1 has many built-in functions for
mission-critical applications and a robust database engine, similar
in design to that of DB2 on MVS, it provides an excellent platform
for database application development.
Using the Single-User version of DB2/2 Version 1, users can
create and access databases located on their own workstation. As
time goes on, and the users' needs expand, their workstations may
become part of a LAN environment. Concurrently, the need for access
to data on remote database servers on the LAN also may be required.
Because DB2/2 Version 1 includes database client support, users do
not have to upgrade to or buy a different product in order to use
remote databases.
Some businesses prefer to have dedicated database servers
centrally located, with all access to its databases coming from
multiple remote database clients throughout the LAN. This approach
allows for centralized control of the data from a systems management
point of view. Database client-only workstations also are a
lower-cost price alternative because the cost of the database client
software is less and the amount of RAM and DASD required for each
workstation is smaller. IBM's new high capacity workstations, with
large amounts of memory and DASD support, are excellent choices for
server workstations whose databases will be accessed concurrently by
multiple users.
Many businesses are employing data staging, where a database
workstation on the LAN connects to a host database using DDCS/2
Version 2 to download a snapshot of its data to a LAN database server
on a periodic basis, for example, once a day. This approach allows
client/server users and application programs to have access to host
data for informational purposes and at the same time keeps the host
database running as a production system. Additionally, host
applications can be moved to the workstation platform, providing the
ability to offload work from the host and downsize key business
applications to the client/server environment. The Client/Server
version of DB2/2 Version 1 and the Multi-User Gateway version of
DDCS/2 Version 2 products provide the database client and database
server functionality to answer these requirements.
Some businesses have a requirement to access LAN databases for
some applications but to directly access host databases for others.
The DDCS/2 Version 2 products provide for direct read and update
access to IBM's host relational database family members. When direct
access and performance are highly important, the Single-User version
of DDCS/2 Version 2 can be installed on a workstation to provide a
dedicated route to DB2, SQL/DS or OS/400 databases. Access to the
host is available through DDCS/2 Version 2 from the user's own
workstation. This product can also be a key entry point into
evaluating the DDCS/2 Version 2 functions because of its low cost.
The DDCS/2 Version 2 Multi-User Gateway product functions as a
gateway workstation for OS/2, DOS, and DOS Windows database clients
who pass requests to it for processing. The DDCS/2 workstation
receives concurrent requests from multiple OS/2, DOS, and/or DOS
Windows database client workstations and, in turn, re-routes these
requests to the appropriate host database for processing.
Customers are integrating their workstations and resources
into wider corporate networks. DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2
provide solutions for both the workstation and host database platform
now and in the future. As the customer's business requirements
expand and more users need access to the data, DB2/2 Version 1 and
DDCS/2 Version 2 products provide low-cost entry points into the
distributed client/server LAN and host database environments.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
Migration and coexistence of database manager products and databases
is important. Given the size of today's local area network
environments, customers cannot always upgrade to a new offering
immediately upon availability. Interoperability between the old and
new versions of software is a requirement.
IBM DATABASE 2 OS/2 -- Version 1 and IBM SAA Distributed
Database Connection Services/2 -- Version 2 accept requests from
downlevel versions of OS/2 EE 1.3 and OS/2 ES 1.0 database clients.
Additionally, DB2/2 clients can access ES 1.0 database servers.
DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 have been designed to run
and take advantage of the new Network Transport Services/2 (NTS/2)
and Communications Manager/2 products. In addition, DB2/2 Version 1
and DDCS/2 Version 2 can be installed and run with ES 1.0
Communications Manager where required. These communications products
are also used in conjunction with IBM's LAN Server products and may
already be installed. As such, the database user can take advantage
of and share these functional capabilities concurrently through the
multi-tasking capabilities of the OS/2 2.0 operating system.
A migration and upgrade path to the new DB2/2 Version 1 and
Communications Manager/2 products is being offered. There are some
existing customers who must phase in their new applications over an
extended period of time, however, and who will want to use the new
database product in conjunction with the old communications product.
DB2/2 Version 1 can run in conjunction with ES 1.0 Communications
Manager and OS/2 2.0 with Servicepak XR06055, or later.
Application development is time consuming. To protect
customer investments, existing 16-bit OS/2 database applications will
continue to run on DB2/2 Version 1 database servers without the need
for recompilation or relinking. This is provided by "thunking"
support. Thunks are the layers of code necessary to convert from a
16-bit context to a 32-bit context and vice versa. DB2/2 Version 1
will also support the continued development of applications using the
16-bit Microsoft C Compiler Version 6.0 and MicroFocus COBOL Compiler
Version 3.0. Thunks will not be provided, however, for any new
interfaces created exclusively for use by the 32-bit DB2/2 Version 1.
Extended Services 1.0 Database Manager supports the
development of 32-bit applications using IBM C Set/2. Although not
required, when migrating these 32-bit applications for use with DB2/2
Version 1, it is recommended that they be recompiled and relinked so
that they can access the new DB2/2 Version 1 interfaces directly to
improve performance.
Customer investments in both host-based and workstation-based
relational data will be protected by IBM's Distributed Relational
Database Architecture (DRDA (TM)). DRDA and the DDCS/2 products that
implement the architecture on the OS/2 platform enable applications
running on DOS, DOS Windows, or OS/2 workstations to transparently
access data stored in DB2, SQL/DS, or OS/400 relational databases.
Properly written applications can routinely switch back and forth
between local OS/2 databases and host databases without recompilation
or other changes. Applications can therefore access all of the
relational data within an enterprise, regardless of which IBM
relational database contains the data.
DDCS/2 can also be used effectively as part of an OS/2-based
application development downloading scenario, where the application
being developed on OS/2 will ultimately be ported back to the host
and run there in production mode. An application could access a
local OS/2 database during unit test for convenience and then switch
back to the host database during system test to access a potentially
broader range of data from multiple sources or other applications
stored at the host.
DDCS/2 can also be used to add routine capabilities to an
application to download or upload data to and from the host. This
capability, as an alternative to the SQLQMF facility, is
bi-directional, keeps logging requirements to a minimum by varying
the COMMIT frequencies, and can be written with a checkpoint restart
capability.

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 are Systems Application
Architecture (R) (SAA) products. As such, one or more of the
following business solutions can be addressed:
o Database applications can be developed on the workstation that
accesses databases in the client/server LAN environment only; or
o Database applications can be developed on the workstation for
ultimate use in a production database environment on the host; or
o Database applications can be developed for execution at more than
one IBM relational database platform; or
o Database applications can be developed on the workstation that
accesses both databases on the LAN and at the host.
In DB2/2 Version 1, more DB2 compatibility functions have been
added as well as expanded support for SAA SQL Level 2. Using the SAA
SQL Common Programming Interface, business solutions can be developed
for one database platform that can easily be ported to other.
DDCS/2 Version 2 supports the IBM direction for distributed
database management by providing Remote Unit of Work (RUOW)
capability between OS/2 database applications and remote relational
databases. Based on the IBM Distributed Relational Database
Architecture (DRDA), the RUOW support allows end users and
applications to access relational data on other IBM relational
database management systems.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
Managing a diverse number of workstations and configurations in a
client/server environment is complex and time consuming. Often
hundreds or thousands of workstations must be managed.
The IBM LAN NetView family of products will support the
management of DB2/2 servers, gateways, and clients. This support is
provided in the LAN NetView Agents Extended product, which includes
an agent for the DB2/2 product. Managing applications running on a
LAN NetView management station will be able to use the DB2/2 agent
for managing DB2/2 Version 1 and its databases.
DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 are enabled to be
installed remotely using IBM's Configuration, Installation and
Distribution (CID) technology, allowing database programs to be
installed remotely from a code server.
In addition to building your own database systems management
applications, the IBM DataHub (TM) family of products provides key
database management functions for relational databases. For more
information on the DataHub family of products, please refer to
Programming Announcement 292-586, dated October 6, 1992.
DB2/2 Version 1 provides problem determination and problem
source identification by its support of the First Failure Support
Technology/2. This includes the ability to log errors and to save
and capture relevant information for network reporting and alert
generation.
DB2/2 Version 1 also provides an Operational Status
Application Programming Interface (API) to obtain information on what
users or applications are connected to a database and the status of
current transactions. A Presentation Manager (R)-based set of
database administration tools is also included with DB2/2 Version 1
to support configuration, directory and recovery tasks.

USER PRODUCTIVITY
DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 enhance user productivity in the
following ways:
o Installation
The DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 installation
programs are OS/2 Workplace Shell (TM) CUA (TM) programs designed
for faster and easier installation. In addition, the DB2/2
Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 components, the OS/2 Distributed
Feature Database Client Enabler code, Query Manager and Query
Manager Distributed Feature can be remotely installed through the
use of IBM's CID technology.
o Consistency in application development has been maintained
between the OS/2 EE/ES Database Manager versions and DB2/2
Version 1.
Customers' 16-bit applications and supported 16-bit
compilers can continue to be used. In addition, 16-bit
applications can be ported and converted to 32-bit database
applications.
o Improved DB2 compatibility and SQL SAA Level 2 functions have
been provided, allowing for easier portability of SQL
applications across IBM's relational database platforms, reducing
unique application development code for each platform.
o Three interfaces to DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2
functions are provided to support application programmers and
novice users alike.
These interfaces include:
- For programmers, an application programming interface for use
in embedding SQL in C, COBOL, and FORTRAN programming
languages. Additionally, when using SAA Procedures
Language/2 REXX, an interface is provided to call DB2/2
Version 1 interfaces directly from the REXX program.
- For programmers and experienced users, a command line
processor for entering SQL statements and database commands
directly from the OS/2 command line.
- For novice users, the OS/2 Query Manager providing a prompted
user interface for entering and updating data, and for
developing queries and reports on data stored in a database.
o Transparent access to databases is provided without having to
know the routing structure and location of the database.
The database can be cataloged once and from then on, be
selected by name only. This shields the communications
connectivity considerations from the daily user or application.
o Performance enhancements will be through the exploitation of
OS/2's flat memory model as well as when accessing large
databases running on high capacity workstations.
SYSTEMS APPLICATION ARCHITECTURE (SAA)
IBM DATABASE 2 OS/2 -- Version 1 and IBM SAA Distributed Database
Connection Services/2 -- Version 2 are members of IBM's Systems
Application Architecture database family of products. These products
provide for the development of portable applications and the
interconnection of cooperative SAA systems.
Specifically, DB2/2 Version 1:
o Supports the relational model of data, consistent with IBM DB2,
SQL/DS, and OS/400 host database products.
o Supports the Structured Query Language based on the
implementation of SQL in DB2, SQL/DS, and OS/400. DB2/2 Version
1 supports SAA SQL Level 1. Additional DB2 compatibility items
have been included in this release as well as functions in
support of IBM SQL Level 2.
o Supports IBM C Set/2 and SAA Procedures Language/2 REXX.
o Supports the SAA Query Common Programming Interface within Query
Manager.
IBM SAA Distributed Database Connection Services/2 --
Version 2, as its name implies, implements the Distributed Relational
Database Architecture (DRDA), which is supported by all of IBM's
relational database management products.
o DDCS/2 Version 2 program provides a connection that expands the
homogeneous Database Manager client/server environment to a
heterogeneous client/server environment. It connects a database
client to a host database management system by an implementation
of DRDA protocol. DRDA provides this access by defining a set of
protocols which provide the connection between an application and
a remote relational database management system, which may operate
in either a like or unlike environment from the application.
When an application uses SQL to access remote relational data,
the DDCS/2 program provides the connection to the remote database
via DRDA.

COREQUISITES DB2/2 VERSION 1: Provides support for C, COBOL and
FORTRAN compiled languages. Writing an application in a compiled
language makes a high level of flexibility available to the
programmer. For a compiled language, an appropriate precompiler must
be available to process the SQL statements. DB2/2 Version 1 has been
verified to work with the following 16-bit and 32-bit compilers:
16-BIT COMPILERS:
o For OS/2, DOS and DOS Windows database applications:
- C -- Microsoft (2) C Compiler Version 6.0
- FORTRAN -- WATCOM F77/Compiler Version 9.01 (Patch Level D)
(OS/2 only)
- COBOL -- MicroFocus COBOL Compiler (3) Version 3.0
32-BIT COMPILERS:
o For OS/2 database applications:

(2) Registered trademark of Microsoft.
(3) Trademark of Micro Focus, Inc.
COMPATIBILITY: DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 provide upward
compatibility for applications that were written to utilize the
application programming interfaces in the previous releases of OS/2
Extended Edition and Extended Services database products.
o All database engine functions found in Extended Services 1.0 are
provided in DB2/2 Version 1; for example, transaction management,
concurrency control, data integrity and protection, application
programming interfaces, Referential Integrity, Forward Recovery,
Remote Data Services, a cost-based optimizer, etc.
o Existing databases from EE 1.3 and ES 1.0 can be migrated to the
DB2/2 Version 1 environment via a migrate command or API.
o Downlevel 16-bit EE 1.3 and ES 1.0 OS/2, DOS, and DOS Windows
clients can access uplevel DB2/2 Version 1 database servers.
o A DB2/2 Version 1 database client using NetBIOS or APPC can also
access downlevel ES 1.0 database servers. Additionally, the DOS
and DOS Windows clients provided with DB2/2 Version 1 can access
ES 1.0 and DB2/2 Version 1 database servers.
o Both the ES 1.0 Query Manager and the Query Manager shipped with
DB2/2 Version 1 can be used in a client/server environment to
access DB2/2 Version 1 and ES 1.0 remote databases.
o DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 can be used with either the
ES 1.0 Communications Manager or the IBM Communications Manager/2
products.
o Existing 16-bit applications written in C, COBOL, or FORTRAN will
continue to run on DB2/2 Version 1 without the need for
recompilation or relinking. These 16-bit applications can also
be ported to 32-bit, if desired, and used with DB2/2 Version 1.
Existing 32-bit applications developed for use with ES 1.0
Database Manager using IBM C Set/2 are supported unchanged.
However, although not required, it is recommended that these
applications be recompiled and relinked to access the new DB2/2
Version 1 interfaces directly in order to enhance performance.
All of these functions provide interoperability between releases.
LIMITATIONS:
o Migration from EE 1.0, EE 1.1, or EE 1.2 Database Manager is not
supported directly. Databases created before EE 1.3 or ES 1.0
must first be migrated to EE 1.3 or ES 1.0.
o The LAN Adapter and Protocol Support program (LAPS) and LAN
Support Program Version 1.2.1 or higher are not included in the
DB2/2 Version 1 programs or in the Distributed Feature Database
Client-Enabling package of the client/server version of DB2/2
Version 1. These LAN products must be obtained separately in
order to obtain support of NetBIOS communications if they are not
already installed.
o Query Manager does not support the following DB2/2 Version 1
functions via a prompted interface:
- Roll Forward Recovery
- SQL Date/Time Arithmetic, Decimal, Integer, or Float Scalar
Functions
- NOT NULL WITH DEFAULT
o The Adobe type font interface is not supported within Query
Manager menus.
o Base operating system printer driver information is not used by
Query Manager.
o Query Manager and Query Manager Distributed feature do not
support access to IBM host relational databases.
o This is the last version of the Business Graphics Application
Programming Interface. This interface provides users with the
capability to install and use a vendor business graphics program
that had been written to this interface. It provided for a
graphics presentation of report data that was accessed by the
Query Manager's prompted or SQL query functions.
o DB2/2 Version 1 can be used in conjunction with ES 1.0
Communications Manager. However, the ES 1.0 Communications
Manager must be installed on top of OS/2 Version 2.0 with
Servicepak Level XR06055, or later.
o The DOS, DOS Windows and OS/2 clients that are shipped with DB2/2
Version 1 -- Single-User can be used only on the workstation upon
which DB2/2 Version 1 has been installed. The DOS and DOS
Windows clients are provided for use within a DOS session or
within a WIN-OS/2 (TM) session. The Distributed Feature
Client-Enabling code and diskettes are available only with the
DB2/2 Version 1 -- Client/Server program.
(TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2 Version 2 are
32-bit applications that have been written to take advantage of the
OS/2 2.0 flat memory model.
DB2/2 Version 1 has an extensive array of configuration
parameters available that can be tuned and modified to achieve
maximum performance. The Database Configuration file parameters
provide significant flexibility for tuning to a desired memory
threshold or for a chosen worst-case/best-case aspect of your
applications' SQL code.
PLANNING INFORMATION
DB2/2 VERSION 1 (SINGLE-USER) AND DB2/2 VERSION 1 (CLIENT/SERVER)
VERSIONS
In order for DB2/2 Version 1 to run in a client/server environment,
both the OS/2 database server workstations and the database client
workstations must have the proper level of the operating system
installed and a supported type of communications protocol also
installed.
DDCS/2 VERSION 2 SINGLE-USER AND MULTI-USER GATEWAY VERSIONS
The Single-User version of DDCS/2 Version 2 requires the Single-User
version of DB2/2 Version 1 to be installed; the Multi-User Gateway
version of DDCS/2 Version 2 requires the Client/Server version of
DB2/2 Version 1 to be installed.
In order for DDCS/2 Version 2 to be able to connect to a host
database, an IBM communications product must be installed as well.
In addition, the appropriate level of the IBM host database products
must also be installed at the host database location. This support
should be coordinated with your host database administrators. DDCS/2
can connect to the following DRDA-compatible hosts:
o DB2 Version 2 Release 3
o SQL/DS Version 3 Release 3
o OS/400 Version 2 Release 1.1.
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The customer must provide the minimum
hardware and software environment in which DB2/2 Version 1 and DDCS/2
Version 2 will operate. Before attempting to install the above
programs, the customer should become familiar with the requirements
for fixed disk storage and memory of these products, and other
applications to be installed on a workstation.
Problem determination (PD) is a customer responsibility. PD
is an assessment of whether a problem has been caused by hardware or
software and is not complete until the cause of the problem is
identified. This assessment includes examination of available
symptoms using the PD procedures documented in the DB2/2 Version 1 or
DDCS/2 Version 2 publications.
Problem source identification (PSI) is a customer
responsibility. PSI begins when software is determined to be the
source of the problem. It includes tracing the source of the problem
to a host system control program (SCP), an application program, or
another source. Assisting the customer with PSI is an IBM service
and support responsibility.
