OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
Communications Manager is now easier to install and use. New
installation and configuration processes feature significant
functional improvements that reduce complexity and increase
productivity. The new improved processes include automatic hardware
discovery, pre-set workable defaults (for example, a ready to run
emulator) and automatic validation of parameters.
INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION: Customers may now install and
configure Communications Manager remotely. This significantly
reduces the effort required to install large networks. System
administrators may install and configure workstations from a code
server, at any point on the LAN, or from the central network
management site. Communications Manager provides administrators with
installation templates to assist in developing configuration files
for similar workstations and similar work groups. These templates,
called model configurations, may be tailored with an ASCII editor for
a workgroup or an individual user. These files allow the
installation and configuration of an individual workstation without
any end-user involvement. Because these templates are easily
modified, system administrators do not need to repeat the
configuration process for similar end users or workstations. These
improvements provide a streamlined installation and configuration
process. The time savings from these improvements result in
increased productivity for administrators and end users.
FIRST FAILURE SUPPORT TECHNOLOGY (FFST): System availability and
maintainability are enhanced by incorporating the sophisticated
problem determination capabilities of FFST. Communications Manager
support of FFST enables improved problem isolation and enhanced
automation at centralized problem management focal points (for
example, LAN or System/370 (TM) NetView (R)).
The use of FFST enables an OS/2-wide consolidated message,
error and dump facility. This facility permits a more comprehensive
approach to logging, viewing and managing problem notifications at
each individual workstation. This improves productivity and
usability with respect to problem determination.
In addition, Communications Manager now includes alert routing
to the LAN Network Manager. Alerts such as "printer paper out" can
be filtered for action at the LAN Network Manager. This permits more
serious network outages to be passed through to a centralized network
operator at NetView, helping to reduce costs and increase
productivity.
Communications Manager has enhanced management services API to
support local nested focal point (FP) applications. These FP
applications can be nested to permit the customer to reduce the
number of sessions to higher FPs (for example, NetView) and
partition the network into manageable spheres of control (SOC).
Nested alert FPs receive alerts and forward them to a higher alert
focal point (for example, NetView). Additionally, functions of
nested alert FPs include:
o Logging alerts
o Displaying alerts at the nested FP
o Filtering and correlating alerts before forwarding to a higher FP
o Holding alerts until an available higher focal point becomes
available.
Communications Manager has improved the reliability and
availability of its network management transports. This is
accomplished by providing the ability to initiate acquiring a FP
(called implicit FP support), automatic recovery of primary FPs (up
to eight backup FPs are supported) and remembering the current FP
over restart.
Communications Manager has enhanced management services APIs
to support local network management applications or remote operators
in managing APPN (TM) topology and LU 6.2 accounting data. By
simplifying the task of gathering APPN topology information,
Communications Manager allows the network operator to concentrate on
the actions required to effectively manage network resources. By
implementing LU 6.2 accounting, Communications Manager provides the
capability to track network usage to an end-point resource and
predict growth requirements in the network.
Communications Manager now provides Session Level Encryption
(SLE) for customers requiring data security for sessions between
workstations and hosts. This capability allows customers to use
IBM's Transaction Security System adapters or to develop their own
encryption and decryption routines. SLE improves data security while
providing customers with increased flexibility.

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
The function of Communications Manager/2 is now available in a
client/server implementation. This initial release of the
Communications Manager Client Server/2 supports OS/2 client
workstations operating on a token-ring LAN. The client workstation
contains a rich subset of the functions available in Communications
Manager/2, including 3270/5250 terminal emulation. The Communication
Manager server performs SNA communication services required by the
client. It can also function as a gateway for clients and other IBM
terminal emulator products. This new product provides several
significant benefits. The ability to share resources (such as
communication links) between many clients reduces the
cost-per-workstation of host communications. Because most of the
communication services are provided by the server, client
workstations require less memory and DASD than "full sized"
workstations without sacrificing function. Customers can therefore
obtain Communications Manager function at a lower cost per
workstation. Communication Clients can access multiple servers
across the LAN, which enables workload balancing by the server and
provides a degree of backup and fault tolerance.
The communications capability of Communications Manager has
been expanded with the addition of support for Integrated Services
Digital Network (ISDN) Basic Rate Interface (BRI). ISDN is a world
wide standard for digital networks. ISDN connectivity offers the
capability to utilize digital switched telephone lines over short or
long distances. It offers improved quality and transmission rates at
lower cost when compared to leased lines and switched analog lines.
The ISDN function is ideally suited in environments requiring
switched connections and higher bandwidth that support APPN, APPC,
X.25, 3270 emulation, NETBIOS, 802.2 and applications. In this
environment, Communications Manager ISDN support provides
productivity improvements and increased efficiency when compared to
previously available remote connectivity options.
END USER PRODUCTIVITY
All Communications Manager end-user interfaces are enhanced to
provide increased useability and user productivity. They now have a
consistent Presentation Manager based end-user interface. The 3270
and 5250 terminal emulators now have a common code base. The 5250
emulator is now based on Presentation Manager interface. Another
emulator enhancement is a graphical end user interface for tasks such
as file transfer, color remapping and keyboard remapping. The
graphical interface improves end-user productivity for these tasks.
Users need only point and click with a mouse to accomplish these
tasks. The emulators are standardized to provide end users with a
common appearance and operation. For instance, Communications
Manager products allow the end user to remap the keyboard for 3270
and 5250 emulation (customers may still remap keyboards separately).
This one step operation enables the end user to switch emulators
without having to adjust between different functions for certain
keys. This saves time and rework.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT
Communications Manager provides customers with functions that
increase the capacity of workstations and communication gateways. A
Communications Manager workstation or gateway can now be physically
connected to more than one host or gateway concurrently. This
Multiple PU 2.0 support is an important capability because it allows
the customer to connect the workstation sessions in up to three
separate networks or hosts. For non-distributed function terminal
(DFT) workstations, the 3270 emulation session limit on OS/2-based
workstations has been increased. The 3270 emulator can now support
16 concurrent sessions with 26 sessions configured, compared to the
previous limit of five. The 5250 session limit has been increased
from five to fifteen.
With the Communications Manager Client Server/2 product,
communication services are concentrated at the server workstation.
This off-loads much of the work typically performed on a
communicating workstation. The Communication Clients therefore
enable customers to accomplish more with existing workstations.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
Communications Manager protects the customers' investment in OS/2 by
providing upward compatibility for applications that were written to
utilize the communications manager component of OS/2 Extended Edition
and Extended Services for OS/2. Customers can now run existing
applications using the new ISDN services.
The Communications Manager products also protect customers'
investment in hardware. Customers can take advantage of the power
and performance of OS/2 Version 2.0 and Communications Manager on
many models of non-IBM system units. Communications Manager/2 and
Communications Manager Client Server/2 will run on systems that use
80286 processors and OS/2 Standard Edition 1.30.1 (with CSD 5050).
Customers can utilize existing systems to begin the implementation of
Communications Manager based applications.

TECHINFO TECHNICAL INFORMATION
SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:
SYSTEM UNITS: Communications Manager/2 and Communications Manager
Client Server/2 will run on IBM PS/2, PS/ValuePoint, PC/AT (R), IBM
Industrial Computers and selected non-IBM system units. The system
unit must have an 80286 (or higher) processor, adequate random access
memory (RAM) and storage capacity.
For the server component of Communications Manager Client
Server/2, it is recommended, but not required, that the system unit
be equipped with an 80386 (or higher) processor. It is recommended
that customers consider the recently announced PS/2 server strategy
when selecting the server system unit for the Communications Manager
server. That strategy identified three tiers of server systems. The
tiers include:
o An entry level system, typified by the PS/2 Model 80 or Model 85
o An advanced availability system, typified by the PS/2 Models 95
and 95 XP
o Fault tolerant systems, such as the PS/2 Model 295.
Medialess systems may be used in conjunction with remote
installation procedures. The Communications Manager products can be
loaded remotely from an IBM LAN Server Version 2.0 or Version 3.0
server.
In instances where the Communications Manager products will be
locally installed, the system unit should have a diskette drive
capable of reading either 3.5-inch high capacity (1.44MB) or
5.25-inch high capacity (1.22MB) diskettes and a fixed disk storage
device.
The fixed disk storage and random access memory capacity
requirements will depend on a number of factors, including the
customer's configuration, operating system and other installed user
applications. The following estimates are provided as a guide. The
Communications Manager/2 will typically require a minimum of 2MB
system memory and 10MB of fixed disk storage in addition to the
requirements of the operating system, customer applications and data.
The Communications Manager server will typically need 4MB of RAM and
10MB of DASD. These requirements will vary, depending on the
Communications Manager features and functions that the user installs.
To further assist, memory and fixed disk estimating worksheets
are provided in the PLANNING INFORMATION section. Copies of these
worksheets are included in each program package. The customer should
consult the documentation of the selected operating system and
applications to determine the memory and fixed disk storage capacity
that are required.

NON-IBM SYSTEM UNITS: The Communications Manager products will run
on non-IBM system units that are supported by OS/2 Version 2.0, or
later. Customers should consult their system unit vendor for
additional details. These system units must have adequate system
memory, adequate fixed disk storage capacity and an appropriate
diskette drive. Additional information regarding functions which are
supported by non-IBM hardware may be available from the vendor. The
following non-IBM system units and operating systems have been tested
by IBM with Communications Manager/2 and Communications Manager
Client Server/2.

usage conflicts, not all combinations of communications adapters
can be used concurrently by Communications Manager.
(11) This adapter is supported only on system units with processor
speeds up to and including 33 megahertz.
OTHER ADAPTERS: In addition to the 3Com, Ungermann-Bass and Standard
Microsystems (formerly Western Digital) adapters previously
mentioned, Communications Manager/2 and Communications Manager Client
Server/2 may be supported by other communications adapters. This is
possible through the use of the Network Device Interface
Specification (NDIS) interface. The NDIS interface was developed by
Microsoft and 3Com. IBM has extended the NDIS specification in its
implementation of NDIS drivers in the Communications Manager
products. Communications Manager/2 and Communications Manager Client
Server/2 will operate with those adapters that provide support for
NDIS Media Access Control (MAC) device drivers. The device driver in
these cases is shipped with the individual adapter by the adapter
vendor.
ISDN CONNECTION SUPPORT: ISDN connectivity is provided when a
Communications Manager single user or server workstation or gateway
is configured with an IBM ISDN Coprocessor/2 Model 2 adapter and IBM
ISDN Coprocessor Support Program Version 1.2:
o Another PS/2 with an ISDN Coprocessor/2 Model 2, which supports
SDLC, X.25, NETBIOS and IDLC when this support becomes available
o IBM 3174 Control Unit with ISDN BRI Adapter, using IDLC when that
support becomes available
o AS/400 with BRI Feature, when IDLC support is available in
Communications Manager
o IBM host via those models of the IBM 7820 ISDN Primary Adapter
(for SDLC and X.25) and 7820 ISDN Terminal Adapter that are
supported by the ISDN Coprocessor Support Program Version 1.2.
This support may vary by country and may not be available in all
locations.
SESSION LEVEL ENCRYPTION ADAPTER: Support for session level
encryption requires a cryptographic facility to be present that
provides key management and data confidentiality services compliant
with the IBM Common Cryptographic Architecture. These services can
be provided by an IBM 4755 Cryptographic Adapter 3 (except commercial
DES models) and its supporting software.
CONTROLLERS: The following table lists IBM host communication

LAN ADAPTER AND PROTOCOL SUPPORT: The use of Communications
Manager/2 or Communications Manager Client Server/2 on a local area
network requires the LAN Adapter and Protocol Support (LAPS)
function. LAPS provides the LAN transport (network communications)
software for OS/2 environments. It includes: NDIS-compliant protocol
and network adapter drivers, and support for LAPS APIs (NetBIOS and
IEEE 802.2).
The Communications Manager products can utilize the LAPS
component that is provided with one of several other products. These
products include the LAN Requester of the IBM LAN Server Version 2.0,
the LAPS component shipped with the IBM LAN Server Version 3.0, and
the Extended Services for OS/2 products. In instances where the
Communications Manager component of Extended Services for OS/2 is
being upgraded, the LAPS function will be retained during the upgrade
process and will be used by the Communications Manager/2 and
Communications Manager Client Server/2. If one of these products is
not installed on the workstation, the LAPS function can be acquired
by installing the IBM Network Transport Services/2 (NTS/2) product.

COMPATIBILITY: Communications Manager/2 and Communications Manager
Client Server/2 provide upward compatibility for applications that
were written to utilize the APIs of the communications manager
subsystem in the OS/2 Extended Edition and Extended Services for OS/2
products.
Customers can upgrade the communications manager subsystem in
the Extended Edition and Extended Services products. This upgrade
may impact certain other functions and subsystems in the Extended
Edition, and Extended Services products. Following is a description
of the impact of upgrading the communications manager subsystems.
o Upgrade of OS/2 Extended Edition:
When Extended Edition is upgraded, the functions and
subsystems outside of the Communications Manager subsystem will
be lost. Specific examples of these functions are: the LAN
requester, the database manager subsystem, the SQL LAN Only
Option (SQLLOO) and the Extended Edition level of the User
Profile Manager (UPM). The LAN requester is now available as a
distributed feature in the OS/2 LAN Server Version 2.0 and LAN
Server Version 3 products. The UPM function will be replaced
with the enhanced level of UPM in Communications Manager. The
SQLLOO function is not supported by the new Communications
Manager products.
o Upgrade of Extended Services for OS/2:
When the Extended Services communications manager
subsystem is upgraded, the Communications Manager subsystem is
replaced. There will be no impact to applications or subsystems
that previously utilized the communications manager subsystem.
If previously installed and configured, the database manager
subsystem will continue to function and it can be re-configured.
If not previously installed, the database manager subsystem may
be installed after the Communications Manager upgrade with the
assistance of a utility provided with Communications Manager/2
and Communications Manager Client Server/2.
The Text Assist feature of the AS/400 PC Support program is
not supported in either Communications Manager/2 or Communications
Manager Client Server/2 Version 1.0. This feature was affected
during the convergence of the 3270 and 5250 emulators. This will
also affect any applications using this feature, such as PC Organizer
and OfficeVision (TM)/400. Support of the Text Assist feature under
AS/400 PC Support program will be made available in a later release
of the Communications Manager products.
The Programmable Configuration function available in Extended
Services for OS/2 and the Batch Configuration utility available in
OS/2 Extended Edition are not supported in either Communications
Manager/2 or Communications Manager Client Server/2. The
Programmable Configuration function has been replaced with a new
installation and configuration process and with the implementation of
new general OS/2 configuration, installation and distribution
processes. Because Programmable Configuration is not supported, the
OfficeVision/2 Configurations Utility can not be used with either
Communications Manager/2 or Communications Manager Client Server/2.
Communications Manager may coexist on a network with NetWare
(6) LAN requesters and servers. In addition, NetWare LAN requesters
may be installed on the same workstation as the Communications
Manager. Instructions for the installation of the NetWare requester
for OS/2 are included in the NetWare Services for OS/2 product.
Users will find additional information in the OS/2 LAN Server
Version 2.0 and NetWare from IBM Coexistence Guide. Users should
refer to the COEXIST.TXT file in the NetWare Requester before
installing the requester with either the Communications Manager or
the LAN Server Version 2.0 or Version 3.0.
Communications Manager provides support for the IBM C Set/2
32-bit compiler. By using the C Set/2 Compiler, advanced 32-bit
applications can be developed that use the following Communications
Manager APIs:
o APPC
o CPI Communications (CPI-C)
o Common Services
o System Management
o EHLLAPI
o NETBIOS
o 802.2
o SRPI
o X.25
o ACDI
o ROPS
o Environment Manager
o LUA
o Connection Manager.
The C ".H Include" file is provided to support the
Communications Manager APIs. The ".H Include" files have been

SNA GATEWAY: Communications Manager/2 and the Communications Manager
Client Server/2 server may function as an SNA gateway. A
Communications Manager gateway, which need not be dedicated, allows
multiple users to transparently access a System/370 host. At the
workstation, it appears as if the connection is direct to the host.
The host perceives the gateway as one or more physical units (PU2.0
or PU2.1) with a maximum of 254 logical units (LUs) per PU shared
among the workstations. The supported protocols are IBM LU 0, 1, 2,
3 and dependent LU 6.2. However, support is not provided for the
dependent LU 6.2 protocol from an IBM SNA Services/6000 workstation
to a Communications Manager/2 or Communications Manager Client
Server/2 gateway.
The SNA gateway supports up to 254 concurrently active
workstations per PU on the LAN. Multiple LUs can be active on each
workstation (subject to the aggregate constraint of 254). LUs may be
dedicated to a workstation or pooled among workstations. Pooling
allows workstations to share common LUs, which increases the
efficiency of the application of the LUs and reduces the
configuration and startup requirements in the host. There can be
multiple pools of LUs; each pool is typically associated with a
particular application. Whenever a link is established through the
gateway between a workstation and the host, the LU is brought up when
the session is brought up. The LUs are then returned to the pool for
other workstations to use when the session is brought down.
Workstations that run Communications Manager/2 and the
Communications Manager Client Server/2 server can utilize SNA
gateways that have been configured using OS/2 Extended Edition and
Extended Services for OS/2. SNA gateways configured on
Communications Manager/2 and the Communications Manager Client
Server/2 server can support workstations running any of the following
programs.

one time.
(17) Requires PS/2 direct memory access.
The ISDN support contained in the Version 1.0 products will
consist of the following:
o Up to 4 IBM ISDN Coprocessor/2 Model 2 adapters per workstation
or gateway
o Support for X.25 standard for switched communication services
o Support for the SDLC protocol
o Support for two B channels per adapter; each may be either SDLC,
X.25, NETBIOS, and IDLC (when the IDLC support becomes available)
o Support for one D channel, X.25
o Maximum transmission rate of 64 KBPS over each of the two B
channels
o NETBIOS API support.
The Multiple PU 2.0 support contained in the Version 1.0
products will consist of the following:
o Three PUs will be supported per workstation on one to three
adapters per workstation (for example, three PUs on one adapter to
one PUs on three adapters)
o 3270 emulation to a System/370, System/390 (R) host
o 5250 emulation to an AS/400 host
o A workstation or gateway can support the following host
connectivities:
- X.25
- SDLC
- X.25 over ISDN
- SDLC over ISDN.
o A workstation or gateway can support the following local area
network connectivities:
- Token-ring
- PCNET
- Ethernet.
o Up to 254 LUs per PU.
The IBM Personal System/2 Multiprotocol Adapter/A is not
recommended for use on system units with processor speeds above 33MHz
when using the SDLC protocol. The Communications Manager SDLC device
driver has been modified to compensate for timing situations between
the adapter card and the processor. However, under some
circumstances the processor will outrun the adapter. This causes the
adapter to hang. This could also affect other devices that share the
OS/2 Level 3 interrupt.
Session level encryption support is for 3270 terminal and
printer sessions. There is no Session Level Encryption support for
LU 6.2. For LUA based applications the user must code the exit for
session level encryption support.
The Text Assist feature of the AS/400 PC Support program is
not supported in either Communications Manager/2 or Communications
Manager Client Server/2 Version 1.0. This feature was affected
during the convergence of the 3270 and 5250 emulators. This will
also affect any applications using this feature, such as PC Organizer
and OfficeVision/400. Support of the Text Assist feature under
AS/400 PC Support program will be made available in a later release
of the Communications Manager products.

PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: System performance depends on a variety
of system unit and communication load factors. These include the
type and speed of the system unit processor, number and types of
communication adapters installed, the line speed of the communication
service and the amount of processing done by the applications
utilizing the Communications Manager products.
System performance for Communications Manager Client Server/2
is not available at this time. Information relating to client and
server capacity and performance will be made available prior to the
general availability of the Communications Manager Client Server/2
product.
PLANNING INFORMATION
CLIENT SERVER IMPLEMENTATION: The client server support in
Communications Manager Client Server/2 Version 1.0 entails splitting
the communications functions between a communications provider (the
Communications Manager server) and a communications requester (the
Communications Client). The Communication Client will have a subset
of the functions available in the Communications Manager/2 (single
user) workstation. Remote interfaces for CPI-C, APPC, LUA
applications and Common Services APIs that are compatible with those
available on the single user Communications Manager are provided on
the clients. These remote APIs allow applications to run on client
machines and transparently access the resources present on the
LAN-attached Communications Manager server. The Communications
Manager server provides the clients with connectivity services to
other LAN workstations and also to wide area network nodes for SNA
connectivity. Clients communicate with each other and with single
user workstations via the Communications Manager server. The
Communications Manager server can also act as a full function
Communications Manager single user workstation. As such, the server
can serve as a gateway for Communications Manager single user
workstations as well as for the clients.
Following is a high level comparison of the functions that are
available in the Communications Manager single user, server, and
client workstations.

(18) The Softerm (19) Custom Plus emulator by Softronics, Inc. will
be shipped with Communications Manager/2 and Communications
Manager Client Server/2. The license to use the Softerm Custom
Plus emulator is granted for the Communications Manager/2 and the
server component of Communications Manager Client Server/2 only.
The Softerm Custom Plus license is not applicable to the OS/2
Communications Client.

The Communications Manager client server implementation is
based on an OS/2 communications server with OS/2 client workstations.
The approach used in Communications Manager is to provide the least
amount of code necessary in the client to make the request to the
server. This allows customers to utilize their "low end"
workstations for more significant SNA applications.
The client server implementation provides several benefits:
o Communication clients can access multiple Communications Manager
servers across the LAN:
- This helps improve performance by balancing traffic during
busy work periods
- Clients can be added with minimal administrative efforts and
system administrative costs
- This provides a degree of fault tolerance and backup
capabilities which reduces potential system downtime and lost
workstation productivity
o The ability to share resources (such as communications links)
between several clients reduces the cost per workstation of host
connections
o The memory and DASD requirements for communication clients are
less than those of "full function" communications workstations:
- Customers can obtain communication services at a lower cost
per workstation
- Customers can utilize existing "smaller" workstations to run
the same applications that might otherwise require new
hardware purchases (investment protection)
- By utilizing existing hardware inventories, customers can
more quickly implement new applications (they don't have to
wait for new equipment, budgets or purchases).
MEMORY AND FIXED DISK ESTIMATING WORKSHEETS: The following
worksheets may be used to help determine hardware capacity
requirements. To estimate requirements, add the recommended memory
or hard-file size for the functions and components desired. These
totals, plus sufficient buffer, must be added to the capacity
required for the base OS/2 operating system, other user applications
and the requirements for user data.
The numbers shown in the worksheets are for planning purposes.
They represent the probable memory size in megabytes for concurrent
operation of the functions listed and not the total size of all the
code and data areas that comprise the functions. The quantities
shown assume an acceptable degree of swapping.

CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The customer must provide the minimum
hardware and software environments in which Communications Manager/2
and Communications Manager Client Server/2 will operate. Before
attempting to install either of the Communications Manager products
the customer should become familiar with the requirements for fixed
disk storage and memory of the Communications Manager, the operating
systems, and other applications to be installed on a workstation.
Problem determination (PD) is a customer responsibility. PD
is an assessment of whether a problem has been caused by hardware or
software. PD is not complete until the cause of the problem is
identified. This assessment includes examination of available
symptoms using the PD procedures documented in the Communications
Manager publications.
Problem source identification (PSI) is a customer
responsibility. PSI begins when software is determined to be the
source of the problem. PSI includes tracing the source of the
problem to a host system control program (SCP), an application
program, or another source. Assisting the customer with PSI is an
IBM service and support responsibility.
INSTALLABILITY: It is possible to install Communications Manager
from a drive other than "A." The drive can be a shared drive on an
IBM LAN Server Version 2.0 or Version 3.0 system, other network
server system, or an alternative local drive. For example, when
connected to an IBM LAN Server Version 3.0 system, a user can specify
the network drive and execute Communications Manager installation
with no diskettes required.
The Programmable Configuration function available in Extended
Services for OS/2 and the Basic Configuration function available in
OS/2 Extended Edition are not supported in either Communications
Manager/2 or Communications Manager Client Server/2. The
Programmable Configuration function has been replaced with a new
installation and configuration process and with the implementation of
new general OS/2 configuration, installation and distribution
processes.

SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
The security for 3270 emulation use has been enhanced by
providing a session level encryption capability. This is a
selectable function.
The 5250 terminal emulator function of Communications Manager
uses the User Profile Manager capability of LAN Server Version 2.0 or
Version 3.0 to support log on of the workstation on the LAN. Users
of the 3270 emulation function should rely on the host application
for security, auditability and control.
When using the System/370 Remote Operations Support (ROPS) for
NetView, and a "RUNCMD" is issued, all information is transmitted in
the clear and is not secured. This transmitted information may
include the user ID and password. Transmitted information is also
displayed on the screen and is entered in the NetView log. The
display on the NetView operator's screen and in the NetView log can
be avoided by using the NetView suppression character when the
"RUNCMD" is issued. If passwords are transmitted to the ROPS
service, the user is responsible for securing the NetView terminal
and the NetView logs so that sensitive data is not compromised.
User management is responsible for the evaluation, selection
and implementation of security features, administrative procedures
and appropriate controls in application systems and communication
facilities.
