  1. OS/2 & LAN SERVER SAIL TO RESTORE COLUMBUS DOCUMENTS

  4. In Spain's Archivo General de Indias, nine million pages of documents on
  5. the history of the Discovery of the New World and Spanish administration
  6. in America reside on a computerized information system running
  7. OS/2 Version 2.1 and LAN Server 3.0.
  8.  
  9. The OS/2-based archive makes it possible to access the 15th-19th century
  10. documents very easily and handle them digitally so they do not
  11. deteriorate.  In addition, image-processing tools under OS/2 are used to
  12. "clean" deteriorated documents, which would otherwise be unreadable, so
  13. they can be displayed clearly on PC screens.

  15. Here's how it works:  A researcher enters search text into a database,
  16. which lists related documents found.  The researcher selects a document.
  17. A corresponding message is sent over the network to an image-storage
  18. system, where the document, which was previously digitized and stored in
  19. optical disks, is sent to the researcher's workstation, decompressed,
  20. then loaded into RAM memory so it can be displayed on the screen.  All
  21. that happens smoothly and without delay.  That's because the system is
  22. putting OS/2's multitasking capabilities to work.

  24. In addition to its multitasking benefits, OS/2 provides other
  25. capabilities for the archive system.  The uncompressed file size of each
  26. image is around 1 megabyte.  OS/2's high-power memory management scheme
  27. is needed to load the images quickly, especially when several pages have
  28. to be loaded in RAM simultaneously.  To keep everything running
  29. smoothly, OS/2's Communications Manager handles the dialogue between the
  30. AS/400 database server and the PS/2 client workstations.

  32. It's no wonder why thousands of researchers and archivists from around
  33. the world use the automated archive each year and help fill the 70-seat
  34. research room daily.  Once an image of a document is displayed in front
  35. of them, researchers can manipulate the image through enlargement,
  36. rotation, contrast, and even remove bleeding-ink stains.  When they find
  37. the document they need, they can print it on a laser printer.
