PERSON TO PERSON COLLABORATIVE TELECONFERENCING EXPANDS OFFERINGS TO
NEW PLATFORMS
November 22, 1993
LAS VEGAS, Nov. 15, 1993 . . . For people who want the advantages
of face-to-face meetings without the travel time and expense, IBM today
announced the expansion of its Person to Person offerings to the
Windows* platform. Person to Person for OS/2 was announced earlier
this year.
Person to Person literally brings a videoconferencing studio
to the desktop, allowing users to hold spontaneous teleconferences,
exchanging documents, images, graphs and video in real time.
"Person to Person is ideal for people who have to work together
but can't practically be together," said Wally Casey, director of
marketing for IBM Personal Software Products. "The real-time data
collaboration and sharing functions with extension for video make
conferencing a much more attractive option for meetings including
remote locations. Today's announcement extends Person to Person's
price performance leadership by adding Dynamic Data Exchange for
data sharing and support for Systems Network Architecture."
Person to Person was the first desktop teleconferencing
product in the industry which alone lets users share video and
other information interactively. Person to Person for Windows is
fully compatible with the OS/2 version and a version IBM is
developing to run on AIX*.
Person to Person is ideal for groups working in different
locations, such as manufacturing, government agencies, training
units and marketing branches, and also for those who work in
the same office, such as engineers, designers and writers. They
all can hold real-time, interactive meetings with colleagues,
customers and suppliers. As an added convenience, participants
can join or leave the conference at any time without breaking the
connection.
Person to Person lets users view documents, images and graphics,
change and annotate them, send messages and solve problems without
leaving their offices. And it saves time because meetings easily
can be called spontaneously.
Person to Person can connect participants concurrently over
both local area and wide area networks. When used to connect
people on widely dispersed LANs, it can provide significant savings
in telephone costs that other teleconferencing products do not offer.
Optional video equipment allows users to see one another in a
video window and look at still video images or clips sent by other
meeting attendees. Person to Person has a number of features and
options which can make collaborative video conferencing as easy as
dialing a phone or drawing on a chalkboard.
* A Call Manager acts much like a telephone, allowing calls to
be answered manually or automatically. It provides a direct link to
other participants, and logs and displays information about calls.
* An Address Book Manager stores names, telephone numbers and
user IDs so that setting up phone and data connections is fast and easy.
* A Chalkboard is the key tool for sharing information with other
participants so they can annotate documents and graphics with simple
text and drawing tools. Several chalkboards can be active at the
same time, each loaded with bit maps from scanned images, text
graphics or any standard application window.
* A Clip feature allows participants to "paste" information from
another user into their application. It is made possible by shared
Dynamic Data Exchange.
* A Talk feature offers a simple method of exchanging text messages
by way of the keyboard and is very useful when a phone connection is not
available or cannot provide an adequate level of security.
* A Video tool uses the ActionMedia** II DVI card to capture and
compress video in real time. As many as four other users with
ActionMedia hardware can join in a video conference session. Each
can choose one of the remote parties to see.
* Stills Capture makes it easy to share video images with other
participants or to "paste" them into other applications using the
ActionMedia II card.
Person to Person for Windows will be available Jan. 28, 1994,
at the same price as the Person to Person/2 version for OS/2. The
charge for a special license for 10 users is $1,875 USD.
