3RD EDITION OF CLIENT/SERVER PROGRAMMING WITH OS/2 2.1 AVAILABLE
October 26, 1993
| NOTE: This notice was originally published on 10/15/93 and is
| being republished to provide additional ordering information.
We're happy to announce that the third edition of "Client/Server
Programming with OS/2 2.1" (VNR, 1993) is now available. The book
is available through Mechanicsburg as part of the Skills Dynamics
bookstore (PUBORDER number is G325-0650-2). See customer ordering
information at end of this notice. The book is also
available in all major bookstores. (ISBN is 0-442-01833-9.)
It seems we're always playing catch up with OS/2 and the fast
moving client/server market. Here's what's new in the third edition:
* We go over the new features in OS/2 2.1.
* We go over OS/2 2.X's future directions by introducing the
Workplace OS and the Taligent OO frameworks.
* We position new OS/2 client/server products such as DSOM,
SOMobjects, LAN NetView, NetWare 4.0 for OS/2, CICS V2 and DCE.
* We compare the client/server platforms provided by OS/2 2.1,
Windows 3.X, Windows NT, Windows NT Advanced Server, NetWare 4.0
and Unix.
* We go over the new features in LAN Server 3.0, NetWare 4.0,
DB2/2, CM/2, NTS/2 and DDCS/2 V2.
* We compare NetWare 4.0 with LAN Server 3.0.
* We ported all our programs to OS/2 2.1, DB2/2, LAN Server
3.0, Communications Manager/2 and NTS/2.
* We ran MULTI, RSQL, TP benchmarks, BLOB Olympics and Club
Med in the new 32-bit environment.
* We used the new C Set++ Tools to develop our programs.
* The book is now up-to-date and reflects the state-of-the-art in the
OS/2 client/server arena.
For those of you who've never heard of this book before, here's a quick
introduction:
* The second edition was number three on the Computer Bestseller list
after "DOS for Dummies" and "PCs for Dummies." The book was also
nominated "Book of the Year" by OS/2 Monthly. Remember, we're
talking about an 1100 page client/server book!
* Here's what Columnist Bill Zachmann wrote about the Second Edition:
"Its absolutely one of the most impressive, useful, best-written
computer books I've ever seen. The tutorials on NetBIOS,
Named Pipes, Transaction Servers, SOM, Object Oriented
Programming, and Workplace Shell classes, or Hello World from
SOM/WPS are each, individually, worth the price of the entire book."
Thanks for your strong support. If it continues, we will work
on a fourth edition.
