IBM ANNOUNCES LAN NETVIEW FAMILY
September 28, 1993
Today IBM announced its LAN NetView* family, a comprehensive
set of system management framework products and applications
for managing distributed LAN environments.
LAN NetView is an integrated solution for managing multi-vendor
LANs. Benefits include flexible management of clients, servers,
and other resources -- all using industry standard technologies for
an open management platform.
LAN systems management can be central, remote or a combination
of both with LAN NetView. From a single, consistent graphical
interface, systems administrators can run IBM and other
vendors' management applications.
LAN NetView's ability to provide centralized management in
addition to distributed management minimizes skills required
in remote locations and reduces both end-user downtime and LAN
administrator overtime.
With LAN NetView, administrators can manage a variety of servers:
file/print/mail servers like LAN Server and Netware**, database
servers like DB2/2* and Extended Services Database Manager, and
Communications Servers (CM/2). Client environments that can be
managed include DOS 5.0 and higher, Windows 3.0 and higher,
and OS/2 2.0 and higher. Other network resources such as
bridges, routers and hubs can also managed through SNMP
agents.
Industry standards for open management platforms are built into
LAN NetView. SNMP and CMIP, industry standard management
protocols, are both fully supported. X-Open's XMP Application
Programming Interface is also supported, enabling third party
developers to write portable multi-vendor management applications.
In addition, LAN NetView offers the first implementation of
the Open Software Foundation's Distributed Management Environment
(DME) technology on an Intel platform.
The LAN NetView family of products includes:
* LAN NetView Manage -- Provides the framework for the creation
and execution of systems management applications and allows
the LAN administrator to view and communicate with all hardware
and software on the network.
* LAN NetView Enabler -- Offers management services to OS/2 2.0
and higher managed clients.
* LAN NetView Agents for DOS -- Contains management agents for
IBM DOS 5.0 and higher managed clients.
* LAN NetView Agents Extended -- Offers management agents for
OS/2 servers such as OS/2 LAN Server 3.0, OS/2 Extended
Services Database Manager 1.0, IBM DB2/2 and OS/2 CM/2 1.0.
A core set of systems management applications is included in the
LAN NetView family. Among these are applications which manage
OS/2, DOS and DOS with Windows clients, Netware 3.11 and Netware
4.0, and LAN Server 3.0 servers.
The LAN NetView applications announced today include:
* LAN NetView Monitor -- Provides system performance monitoring
of OS/2 and LAN Server resources on the LAN through data
collection, threshold monitoring, graphing and reporting
features.
* LAN NetView Fix -- Allows the system administrator to
receive and respond to error messages from remote resources,
including OS/2 clients and servers, DOS and Windows clients, and
any SNMP device. Fix provides for automated responses to
errors to allow for unattended operations.
* LAN NetView Tie -- Provides best-of-breed connectivity to
NetView/MVS to centralize host-based management. Tie will
convert events from system resources managed by the
LAN NetView family into SNA alerts and forward them to the
host. It also supports host-based automation by responding
to commands from NetView/MVS.
Application support from other software vendors is strong. More
than 20 applications are already being developed for LAN NetView,
including the following:
* Best/One, BGS
* OSRM2, C. O. L. Systems
* CA-Unicenter, Computer Associates
* ESP, Dolphin Networks
* NETLS, Gradient
* ManageWare, HiTecSoft
* Networker, Legato Systems
* LANlord, Microcom
* Net F/X, Network Telesis
* Netware Services Manager, Novell
* Mass II Systems Management, Parallan
* Network Control Series, ProTools
* AlertVIEW, Shany
* Service Point 32, Strategic Solutions
* ADSM, IBM Storage Systems Division
General Availability of LAN NetView is October 29, 1993. List
