o Hewlett-Packard HP--UX
Together, these servers represent the widest range of Internet
servers in the industry, and they continue to be downloadable from
the Internet for a trial period. The Internet Connection Secure
Server Beta Version for Windows 95 is also available via the
Internet.
Businesses can use these servers to take advantage of the
opportunities created by making information available to people
inside and outside their company. Access to Web pages can be kept
inside a company on an intranet or made publicly available on the
Internet. For example, company policies, company news, and personnel
information can be kept on the intranet, while sales promotions,
sales catalogues, and product information are made available to the
public on the Internet.
The Internet Connection Secure Servers are available for evaluation
at no charge via electronic download from the Internet at:
http://www.ics.raleigh.ibm.com
U.S. and Canadian customers can specify the version that has the
stronger cryptographic capabilities. After 60 days, the security
function is automatically disabled. For those who want to continue
to use the secure feature after the 60-day evaluation period, it must
be ordered for a fee. For AIX, OS/2 Warp, and Windows NT, the
package includes the program documentation and the software to
permanently enable the secure function. For Solaris and HP--UX, the

DESCRIPTION
Base Features
The IBM Internet Connection Secure Servers now available provide the
capability to create a secure WWW presence on the Internet. Its
features include:
o Home Page repository
o HTTP support
o Proxy support
o Proxy caching
o CGI support
o Internet security
o Quick and easy installation
o Easy-to-use configuration tool
o IBM httpd API
o NSAPI support
o Cookies support
o Server-side includes
o Error-message customization
o Enhanced logging and reporting
o Multiple IP address support
New Features
IBM has made dramatic performance improvements, added more function,
and incorporated additional programming language support in Internet
Connection Secure Servers Version 4.2 (ICSS V4.2), including:
o Dramatic improvements in single and symmetric multiple processor
(SMP) environments coupled with significant reductions in CPU
requirements provide higher throughput and shorter response time.
Two examples of these improvements from particular environments
follow (the workload was WebStone 1.1 driving ICSS V4.2 with HTML
GETs on an AIX V4.1.4 RS/6000):
- On a six-way SMP, connections per second improved in excess of
600% from ICSS V4.1 to ICSS 4.2. Response time was reduced by
approximately 86%.
- On a uniprocessor, connections per second improved
approximately 90% from ICSS V4.1 to ICSS V4.2. Response times
improved approximately 45% per connection.
For more performance information and examples, refer to URL:
http://www.ics.raleigh.ibm.com
o HTTP support now includes full HTTP 1.1 compliance. Improvements
in this version include persistent connections and virtual hosts.
Persistent connections allow the server to accept multiple
requests and to send responses over the same TCP/IP connection.
Virtual hosts allow the use of one IP address to serve multiple
files instead of having different IP addresses for different
files.
o Java 1.0 support provides Sun Microsystem standards for servlets.
Servlets typically offer significant performance enhancements over
CGI programs.
o SSL V3 specification is supported in ICSS V4.2. In addition to
providing data encryption and server authentication, client
authentication and additional message digest hashing algorithms
(SHA) are provided for additional security.
o Client Authentication enables the server to determine with a high
degree of confidence that the client is who it says it is. For
example, this could be beneficial in a medical clinic where
patients' files can only be viewed by physicians but anyone can
view the files that contain office hours, telephone numbers, and
other general information.
o Automatic browser detection allows the server to respond to
requests with the version of a Web page or document appropriate
for that browser.
o Page counter and date/time information can be displayed on a page
as graphical images.
o Logging and reporting are enhanced. The previous version of ICSS
provided standard reporting such as number of hits and bytes
transferred. The new Java GUI version supports URLs, host names,
method, or return code reports. Additionally, associations
between these report types can be generated. For example, URL
hits by host, host hits by URL, return codes by URL, and methods
by URL.
o Common Gateway Interface (CGI) support has been expanded to
include the Java programming language in addition to the other
languages, such as C, REXX, and Perl, already supported.
o Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS) provides a way for
webmasters to provide ratings for the documents they own, allowing
Internet users to filter material based on those ratings.
o ICSS now has a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) subagent
that maintains ICSS information and performance data in an SNMP
management information base (MIB). From any SNMP-capable network
manager, like NetView (R)/AIX, you can display, monitor, and
threshold on your server performance. This function is not
currently supported on the Solaris or HP--UX platforms.
o SOCKS support provides the capability to use ICSS V4.2, when
located behind a firewall, as a proxy server to connect to the
destination host via a SOCKS server on the opposite side of the
firewall.
o SSL Tunneling allows the server to act as a proxy server for
secure transactions.
o Using a browser, you can observe the status of the server. You
can view the number of requests processed, number of requests
being processed, amount of data transferred, number of requests
received, number of threads active, and response times.
o Proxy Authentication lets your password protect your proxy server
independently of password protection at the destination server.
o The Internet Connection Application Program Interface (ICAPI) has
two significant improvements in V4.2. The diagnostic capability
is improved by providing additional messages and improved trace
capability. Users can use existing HTTP methods or tailor
existing HTTP methods to satisfy their particular requirements.
o ICSS V4.2 for Windows (R) NT supports the Windows NT Performance
Monitor.
The IBM Internet Connection Secure Servers are available in
U.S./Canada versions and in export versions. The U.S./Canada
versions use a stronger level of security and are not available
outside the U.S. or Canada. The export versions of the secure
servers use the security level that has been approved by the U.S.
Government for export.
The U.S./Canada and export versions fully interoperate
internationally.
Quick and Easy Installation
Installation tools and procedures are available to help you install
ICSS V4.2 on the following operating systems:
o OS/2 Warp -- use the standard OS/2 installation tool, Software
Installer.
o AIX -- use the standard AIX installation procedures through SMIT
using installp.
o Windows NT -- use InstallShield (Stirling Technologies).
