IBM Advanced Print Services (APS) Connect for OS/2(R) Warp Server
allows a Warp Server system to be used for LAN printing of data that
is generated on a S/370(TM), S/390(R), or AS/400(R) host.
Printing a document on any printer in the enterprise, regardless of
location or physical attachment, has long been an industry goal.
This new product is a major step towards the realization of that
goal.
APS Connect for OS/2 Warp Server enhances your host and LAN printing
and transforms single-use printers into multi-use printers, affording
end users an option-filled yet simpler print environment.

DESCRIPTION
Advanced Print Services (APS) Connect for OS/2 Warp Server receives
print datastreams from S/370 or S/390 MVS(R), VM, VSE or OS/400(R)
hosts across SNA networks to OS/2 Warp Server systems for remote
printing on any PPDS, PCL or IPDS printer accessible by OS/2 Warp
Server. Remote printers appear to be SNA-attached to the host PSFs
(Print Services Facility(TM)) and the downloading does not require
operator or user intervention. The datastream is not spooled on the
PC. Error recovery is handled by the host PSF. In addition, IPDS
printers also support the use of host spool forward-space and
back-space commands with full fidelity.
For customers desiring host control of remote IPDS printers, APS
Connect for OS/2 Warp Server will:
o Support any printer supported by OS/2 Warp Server (up to 16
printers simultaneously), ranging from four impressions per minute
(ipm) to over 700 ipm.
o Support new AFP functions such as basic N_UP, enhanced N_UP,
resident outline fonts, and downloaded outline fonts to the extent
of the host PSF support.
o Allow host-supported printers (such as the IBM 6400) that support
IPDS and TCP/IP to be used for LAN printing, even though they are
not supported by OS/2 Warp Server.

PRODUCT POSITIONING
Much of the function of IBM PSF for OS/2 has been previously added to
OS/2 Warp Server. However, one capability has been missing --
support for downloading print data from a host to OS/2 Warp Server
for printing on printers attached to the OS/2 Warp Server System.
This new product provides that capability. In addition, it is an
improvement over PSF/2 because it is CID-enabled and does not have a
DB2(R) prerequisite for this function.

Limitations
Performance Considerations: IBM APS Connect for OS/2 Warp Server
allows multiple printers to be supported from a single PS/2(R). The
actual number that can effectively be supported will vary with
factors such as printer speed, type of CPU attachment, the density
and complexity of the average page, additional data stream
transforms, and the PS/2 model. Some environments may require more
than one OS/2 Warp Server system. Some combinations of applications
and printer speeds may require careful evaluation to determine
feasibility on a particular PS/2 configuration.
Planning Information
Packaging: The APS Connect for OS/2 Warp Server product package
contains machine-readable material and licensing documents. The
machine-readable material is available on CD-ROM.
The following softcopy publications are included:
o Using IBM PSF Direct for Warp Server (S544-5390)
o Network Configuration Guide for System/370(TM) and Communications
Manager/2 (S544-3911)
o Installation Cookbook for System/370 and Token-Ring Networks
(G544-3965)
o Installation Cookbook for AS/400 (G544-3966)
Security, Auditability, and Control
APS Connect for OS/2 Warp Server uses the security and auditability
features of the host PSF driving the printer. In addition, if a
printer is shared between multiple hosts, resources from one host
cannot be used by another host inadvertently.
In addition,
o Between print jobs, all print data stored in the printer is
erased. This prevents data left over from previous AFP print jobs
from being inadvertently used.
o Resources are deleted from the printer at initialization and
termination time and can be deleted under user control between
print jobs.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
appropriate controls in application systems and communication
facilities.
