----------------------------------------
The IBM Internet Connection Servers for AIX(R), OS/2(R) Warp, and
Windows+ NT, Version 4 are part of IBM's family of modular
application servers -- IBM Software Servers. These servers enable
you to rapidly implement client/server applications, using modular
server technology that supports multiple server and client platforms.
For an overview of the IBM Software Servers, refer to Software
Announcement 296-071, dated March 12, 1996.
As part of the IBM Software Server family, these IBM Internet
Connection Servers are now available for IBM's AIX and OS/2 Warp
operating systems, and Microsoft's Windows NT operating system.
These servers are being made available at no charge. Copies of these
programs can be obtained by electronically downloading them from the
Internet. Program packages of these servers are also available for a
fee for those who want to receive the program media and the program
manual.
IBM's Internet Connection Servers provide a reliable foundation for
building a presence on the Internet. With these Web Servers you can
promote your corporate identity and products by hosting your own Web
home pages and making them available on the external network or just
within your own internal network.
IBM also provides Internet Connection Secure Server Version 1.1 for
AIX and Internet Connection Secure Server Version 1.1 for OS/2 Warp
as part of the IBM Internet Connection Family. These secure versions
provide the security you need to protect sensitive or confidential
data from general access on the Internet. For complete details refer
to Software Announcement 295-408, dated September 26, 1995. Look for
these secure servers to become new members of the IBM Software Server
family.

IBM SOFTWARE SERVERS
To meet today's need for software that is easy to install, use, and
operate while working with existing systems, IBM has taken proven
software technology and enhanced it with additional function,
integrated packaging, and simpler terms and conditions. This family
of modular application servers -- THE IBM Software Servers --
includes:
o Communications Server
o Database Server
o Directory and Security Server
o Internet Connection Server
o SystemView(R) Server
o Transaction Server
o Lotus Notes
Together, these servers represent the widest range of application
servers in the industry.
For announcement materials related to the other server products,
refer to Software Announcement 296-071, dated March 12, 1996,
(Overview: IBM Software Servers).
IBM Internet Connection Servers for AIX, OS/2 Warp, and Windows NT,
Version 4
A business can effectively promote its corporate messages, provide
marketing information, give sales support to customers, and even gain
a competitive edge by having their own home pages accessible on the
Web. Access to the Web pages can be kept within a company or made
available outside of the company.
IBM's Internet Connection Servers are available at no cost through
electronic download. For details on how to get your copy, visit this
Internet address:
http://www.ics.raleigh.ibm.com.
Those who want to receive the program package can order it for a fee.
IBM's Internet Connection Servers provide all the necessary features
to get Web pages on the Internet. These products:
o Act as a repository for resources (home pages) created with
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).
o Serve requests from a Web browser (client) using Hypertext
Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to transfer the document.
o Provide proxy support, which means the server acts as an agent for
the browser to access remote servers not directly accessible by
the browser because of security access restrictions. The proxy
server supports requests from HTTP, FTP, and Gopher and acts on
their behalf.
o Support proxy caching. The proxy server can temporarily store
files, making subsequent requests for those files available to the
requester much quicker.
o Provide application interfaces using Common Gateway Interface
(CGI), which is an API between the Web Server and another
application, such as a database. Sample CGI scripts are provided
that will negotiate the movement of data between the Web server
and an outside application.
o Provide CICS(TM) and DB2(R) Web gateways which allow you to tie
your existing corporate systems and data into the Internet (for
AIX and OS/2 Warp only).
o Provide quick and easy installation. For OS/2 Warp, the Web
Server is installed using the standard OS/2 installation tool,
Software Installer. Installation of the Web Server for AIX
follows the standard AIX installation procedures through SMIT
using installp.
o Provide an easy-to-use configuration tool. HTML forms are used to
configure such information as time-out settings, proxy servers,
and caching. For OS/2 Warp, the WebExplorer(TM) can be used for
configuration and administration tasks. For AIX, a Web browser of
your choice may be used.
The AIX Internet Connection server was developed to specifically take
advantage of native AIX utilities including the System Resource
Controller (SRC) for simplified initialization of the server and
auto-restart; logging of critical messages through the AIX syslog;
and improved performance and scalability of the server through the
use of threaded transaction processing using AIX native kernel
threads.
National Language Support
These IBM Internet Connection products are double-byte character set
(DBCS) enabled. Code page support, translations of graphical user
interfaces, messages, online help and documentation, and the Up and
Running Guide are provided. The Internet Server for AIX and OS/2
Warp are available in the following languages:
o French
o Spanish
o Italian
o German
o Brazilian/Portuguese (OS/2 Warp only)
o Japanese
o Korean
o Simplified Chinese
o Traditional Chinese
