OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
Personal Communications Tools, a feature of IBM Personal
Communications family of products, consists of a set of AS/400
programs that provide 5250 display emulation with the ability to
transfer files to and/or from the AS/400 to the personal computer.
PC400 Version 4.0 for OS/2 is installed onto the AS/400 and used in
conjunction with the Personal Communications AS/400 products, which
are installed onto the personal computer. Installation, setup
instructions, and a message reference are contained in the "Memo to
User for Personal Communications Tools" enclosed in the program
package.
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
IBM's emulation family of products provide a common look and
feel across multiple platforms, such as DOS, Windows, and OS/2. This
enables S/390 (R) networks to integrate with AS/400 networks and
provide a consistent emulation look and feel spanning environments.
With the common look and feel across platforms and environments,
training expenses are reduced by providing a consistent end-user
interface across both S/390 and AS/400 platforms.
PC400 provides connectivity to the AS/400 system in the
following ways:
o LAN
o TCP/IP (TN5250)

o Console Support
o X.25 and ISDN via Communications Manager/2.
The versatile connectivity provided in Personal Communications
AS/400 gives flexibility to new and established AS/400 customers in
expanding network capabilities -- remote LAN/WAN or work force
mobility with asynchronous communications.
Client application support includes PC Organizer, Text Assist,
Shared Folders, Data Transfer, and ENPTUI.
Even though there are many ways of connecting to the AS/400,
Personal Communications AS/400 provides the necessary tools to make
the "hows" of using the AS/400 and personal computer transparent to
each other.

o Printer Definition Tables (PDT) are supported by PC400. Unless
PDTs are used, the SCS control codes may not always be handled
correctly, depending on the printer drivers and fonts used.
PC400 depends on the OS/2 Printer Device Drivers to print data
when the print driver is used. Some printer device drivers do
not support all characters that are used by PC400. Such printer
device drivers print an unsupported character as the most similar
character or as the default character of the printer driver (for
example "-").
o The following connectivities do not support multiple physical
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 11
adapters, including two RS232-C ports:
- SNA over Async
o Twinax Console attachment does not support the following:
- File Transfer
- Edit (except Copy) function
- APIs (DDE/EHLLAPI/PCSAPI)
- ENPTUI
- Data Transfer
- Shared Folder
- PC Organizer
- Text Assist
- 132 column mode
- Printer session
- Multiple sessions per one twinax address
o SNA over Async line speed:
- Up to 38.4 bps, but actual results depend upon PC
configuration
o Data Transfer does not support multiple invocations at a time
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: Response time in a terminal environment
depends upon a variety of system unit and data-communication load
factors. These include the type and speed of the system unit
processor, number and types of communication adapters installed, the
line speed of the communication service, and the amount of processing
done by the applications utilizing PC400.
PLANNING INFORMATION
PC400 can be setup to work in a server/client relationship.
This approach for PC400 is to store the least amount of code
necessary on the client workstation and to store the major portion of
the runtime code and configuration information on an LAN file server.
This allows the customers to utilize their "low end" workstations for
more applications.
MEMORY AND FIXED ESTIMATING WORKSHEET: The following worksheets may
be used to determine hardware capacity requirements for PC400. To
estimate requirements, add the recommended memory or hard-file size
for the functions desired. These totals plus sufficient buffer must
be added to the capacity required for the base OS/2 operating system,
other user applications, and the requirements for user data.
Communication Manager/2 Version 1.11 numbers are also shown to help
with your planning requirements.
The numbers shown in the worksheets are for planning purposes.
They represent the probable memory size in megabytes for concurrent
operation of the functions. The quantities shown assume an
acceptable degree of swapping.
