TITLE IBM VOICETYPE VOCABULARIES FOR DICTATION FOR OS/2 AND WINDOWS VERSION
1.1
ABSTRACT Three dictation vocabularies are now available, in U.S.
English, for VoiceType (TM) Dictation for OS/2 (R) Version 1.1 and
IBM VoiceType Dictation for Windows+ Version 1.1:
o VoiceType Vocabulary for Journalism Dictation
o VoiceType Vocabulary for Emergency Medicine Dictation
o VoiceType Vocabulary for Radiology Dictation
VOICETYPE VOCABULARY FOR JOURNALISM DICTATION, created from
the front-page text of a major newspaper, has a richer set of words
than the general office vocabulary included with IBM VoiceType
Dictation. This program is not suitable for business correspondence.
VOICETYPE VOCABULARY FOR EMERGENCY MEDICINE DICTATION, created
from emergency room reports of major hospitals, is designed for
emergency medicine reporting. General practitioners may also find
this vocabulary useful, although they may need to add words for their
specific practice.
VOICETYPE VOCABULARY FOR RADIOLOGY DICTATION, created from
radiology reports of major hospitals, is a general radiology
vocabulary that can be used with many types of reports, such as
X-rays, MRI, and CAT scans.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY
ELIMINATE TYPING: No more waiting for someone else to type your
dictation. Now you can talk directly into your computer and create
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 2
text faster than most people can type. These highly accurate
vocabularies, when used with VoiceType Dictation, actually analyze
your spoken words and enter the words into your computer within
seconds. Go ahead -- close your eyes, put your hands behind your
head, lean back in your chair -- and say hello to VoiceType
Dictation.
USE PROVEN IBM TECHNOLOGY: VoiceType Dictation is pure IBM
technology, based on more than two decades of IBM experience,
previously available in the award-winning IBM Personal Dictation
System. By making speech recognition available to millions of PC
users, VoiceType Dictation represents the beginning of a major change
in the way you work with your computer.
WORK WHERE YOU WANT: VoiceType Dictation runs on computers with 486
and Pentium** microprocessers, and it runs on notebooks with the
VoiceType Dictation PCMCIA Adapter. Your job doesn't stop when you
are out of the office, so why should your ability to dictate stop?
CAPTURE PRECISELY WHAT YOU SAY
CONVERT SPEECH TO TEXT: A sophisticated statistical language model
and a detailed understanding of your voice allows VoiceType Dictation
to accurately convert your thoughts to text. Even words that sound
the same, such as to, too, and two are easily handled.
Examples of phrases you can dictate with the VoiceType
Vocabularies for Dictation are:
o VoiceType Vocabulary for Journalism Dictation
- German Chancellor Helmut Kohl spoke at the United Nations
- UNICEF officials announced increased aid to Ethiopia
- Congressional Budget Office opened hearings in Washington,
D.C.
o VoiceType Vocabulary for Emergency Medicine Dictation
- Irrigated with Betadine**
- Hematoma on the occipital skull
- Edema and ecchymosis under the right cheek
- Placed on metronidazole and Sumycin**
- Depression with suicidal ideation
o VoiceType Vocabulary for Radiology Dictation
- Sonographic evidence of appendicitis
- Tissue radiodensities medial to the lesser trochanter
- Open epiphyses, cannot rule out Salter injuries
IMPROVE ACCURACY: With the specialty vocabularies, IBM VoiceType
Dictation can be optimized for journalism, medical, and radiology
professionals. The vocabularies include a variety of specialized
words and phrases that enable IBM VoiceType Dictation to understand
the words used in daily work.
WORK THE WAY YOU THINK
MAINTAIN YOUR TRAIN OF THOUGHT: With IBM VoiceType Dictation, there
is no need to stop and make corrections along the way. You can do
your editing after you complete your thoughts, rather than in the
middle of your thoughts. VoiceType can even talk back to you and
replay what you said, so you never have to rely on memory to get the
details right.
CREATE TEXT AS YOU WORK: If your work requires you to use your hands
and eyes and simultaneously write reports, VoiceType Dictation can
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
improve your productivity. For example, doctors can examine patients
and dictate their findings at the same time.
LET VOICETYPE DICTATION WORK FOR YOU
Since everyone's pronunciation is a little different, VoiceType
Dictation takes you through an enrollment process to accurately learn
your voice. The process also helps you learn the "discrete" speech
pattern understood by VoiceType Dictation -- you must leave a short
clear space between words. This results in very high accuracy and
instant recognition. There is no need to re-enroll to use the
VoiceType vocabularies, since VoiceType Dictation already recognizes
you.
VoiceType Dictation temporarily stores your spoken words. You
can listen to the spoken words and correct dictated text. A
loudspeaker is required if you use this feature. Because the spoken
word file can be quite large, the spoken word acoustic file is erased
once dictation is corrected and stored as coded text. The coded text
file is much smaller than the spoken acoustic file and uses far less
disk storage.
To use your existing OS/2 or Windows applications with
VoiceType Dictation and the optional VoiceType Vocabularies for
Dictation, simply issue commands or move dictated text to your
programs. For a list of supported applications, refer to the
following Software Announcements, dated November 8, 1994:
o 294-700, VoiceType Dictation for OS/2 Version 1.1
o 294-702, VoiceType Dictation for Windows Version 1.1
PRODUCT POSITIONING
VoiceType Dictation includes a generalized office vocabulary.
This vocabulary is useful in creating typical office correspondence
and documents. VoiceType Dictation also provides the capability to
add up to 2,000 additional words, such as unique industry terms.
VoiceType Vocabularies for Dictation include vocabularies for
specific disciplines -- journalism, emergency medicine, and
radiology. These vocabularies are beneficial to professionals who
need specialized words or phrases. VoiceType Vocabularies for
Dictation also provide the capability to add up to 2,000 additional
words to VoiceType Dictation. However, the specialty vocabularies
should reduce the number of terms you need to add.
