  5. ABSTRACT          With VisualAge (TM) for OS/2 (R), Version 2.0 and VisualAge
  6.            for Windows (1), Version 2.0, IBM continues its commitment to provide
  7.            integrated, application development environments designed especially
  8.            for client/server, mission-critical, line-of-business applications
  9.            through visual programming and construction-from-parts technologies.
  10.            VisualAge for OS/2, Version 2.0 will include the functions of
  11.            VisualAge for OS/2, Version 1.0, plus:
  12.            o   Usability and performance enhancements
  13.            o   System Object Model (SOM) and Distributed System Object Model
  14.                (DSOM) support
  15.            o   Double-byte character set and NLS enablement for OS/2 J
  16.            o   Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) support
  17.            o   CICS (TM) Version 2 External Call Interface (ECI) support,
  18.                provided as part of the VisualAge Communications/Transaction
  19.                feature (sold separately)
  20.            o   Color and font support for VisualAge parts, which allows
  21.                application developers to alter the background and foreground
  22.                color on visual parts, and change the font for parts that contain
  23.                text
  24.            o   Connection Debugger, which allows application developers to trace
  25.                through an application, monitor the state of current application
  26.                values, and set execution break points to stop application
  27.                execution in a controlled manner
  28.            VisualAge for Windows, Version 2.0 will include the function of
  29.            VisualAge for OS/2, Version 2.0, where such function is applicable to
  30.            the Windows environment.
  31.            IBM plans to visually enable the powerful AS/400 (R) access
  32.            components of ENVY**/400 and offer the components as a separately
  33.            orderable feature for VisualAge Team.  This will provide the best of
  34.            both the VisualAge and ENVY/400 products -- visual construction for
  35.            cross platform client/server applications and optimized AS/400
  36.            access, all on the 32-bit IBM Smalltalk base.
  37.            In support of the VisualAge product family and other IBM products,
  38.            IBM has announced a program, code-named Object Connection, designed
  39.            to encourage third-party vendors to build and sell their own
  40.            compatible components for use with VisualAge.  This program will give
  41.            customers the flexibility to build components or buy components from
  42.            a wide range of vendors.  Object Connection, in conjunction with
  43.            VisualAge's open design and published interface, will help enable the
  44.            software development industry's movement to higher levels of
  45.            engineering discipline through code reuse.  For software developers,
  46.            the Object Connection program offers a technical support venue and a
  47.            resource for consultation on market, channel and other business
  48.            issues.
  49.            VisualAge for OS/2, Version 2.0 and VisualAge for Windows,
  50.            Version 2.0  will be made available in June 1994, to a selected set
  51.            of customers.  These customers will participate in a beta evaluation
  52.            and test, providing feedback on product function and quality.  When
  53.            these customers confirm that IBM has achieved the functional and
  54.            quality objectives, IBM will announce planned availability and
  55.            detailed information regarding pricing and ordering.
