  7. ABSTRACT          Person to Person (TM) (P2P) is the single solution for all
  8.            users of desktop systems needing the advantages of real-time
  9.            interactive conferencing and collaborative working, whatever the type
  10.            of network connection.
  11.                   P2P collaborative working software announced in November 1992
  12.            for OS/2 (R), is now extended with attractively priced new releases
  13.            for personal computers running DOS with Microsoft (1) Windows (2).
  14.                   Person to Person/2 (R) for the OS/2 operating system, is
  15.            enhanced with a shared Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) capability between
  16.            users and is now able to support networks running APPC/APPN (TM)
  17.            communications protocol, providing compatibility with SNA.
  18.                   The P2P software family includes the following utilities or
  19.            applets to help users establish and manage multi-party conferences
  20.            from their desktop:

  82. OVERVIEW   COLLABORATION IN ACTION
  83.            P2P has a number of features and options that make desktop
  84.            collaboration as easy as dialing a phone or drawing on a chalkboard:
  85.                   CALL MANAGER acts much like a telephone and must be activated
  86.            before meetings can begin.  Call Manager provides a direct link to
  87.            other participants, and logs and displays information about calls.
  88.            Calls can be answered manually, automatically, or barred.
  89.                   ADDRESS BOOK MANAGER works in conjunction with Call Manager.
  90.            The address book is where the name, user ID and telephone numbers are
  91.            stored of people you wish to contact using P2P.  The Address Book
  92.            Manager can be used to initiate a conference and to set up the data
  93.            links needed.   Alternatively these functions can be set up using
  94.            several of the other P2P conferencing utilities.
  95.                   CHALKBOARD provides the "what you see is what I see"
  96.            capability for interactive real-time collaboration and is the key
  97.            tool used to share application data with other participants. Multiple
  98.            chalkboards can be in action at the same time, and they can be loaded
  99.            with bit maps from scanned images, text graphics or any standard
  100.            application window.  They provide a shared workspace that can be
  101.            annotated with a set of simple drawing and text tools.
  102.                   CLIP is an extension of the OS/2 or Windows clipboard and is
  103.            another way of sharing data with others, who are able to "paste" what
  104.            you "copy" into one of their own applications.
  105.                   SHARED DYNAMIC DATA EXCHANGE in OS/2 and Microsoft Windows
  106.            allows data to be exchanged continuously and automatically.  It
  107.            allows workstation applications to communicate with each other while
  108.            they are running.  Usually these "conversations" are triggered by use
  109.            of the clipboard to paste data into an application program using an
  110.            item called "Paste link" (or something similar) in the "Edit" menu of
  111.            an application program.  If CLIP is used to share clipboards, DDE
  112.            links can be started between any of the participants in the call and
  113.            these continue as long as the call is in progress.
  114.                   TALK offers a simple method of exchanging text messages with
  115.            others through the keyboard, and is especially useful if a separate
  116.            telephone link is not available or would not meet the information
  117.            security needs.
  118.                   FILE TRANSFER allows the transfer of files to and from other
  119.            users, together with the facility to prefix the file with a message.
  120.                   VIDEO extends the collaborative sharing of data to include the
  121.            visual sharing of either live or recorded motion images of people or
  122.            objects.  P2P uses the ActionMedia II DVI Technology hardware on
  123.            personal computer platforms to capture and compress video in real
  124.            time ready for sending over the network to others in the conference.
  125.            Up to four other users with ActionMedia II capture hardware can join
  126.            in a video conference session, with the ability for each user to
  127.            select which one of the remote parties to view.  Remote party viewing
  128.            of video is also available without additional hardware through use of
  129.            the computer main processor.
  130.                   STILLS CAPTURE allows the capture, using ActionMedia II
  131.            hardware on personal computer platforms, of images from video sources
  132.            in bit mapped format suitable for sharing with others or for
  133.            importation into other applications.
  134.            PRODUCT POSITIONING
  135.            P2P is the most effective choice of collaborative working software
  136.            for those needing:
  137.            o   A range of popular personal computer and workstation platforms
  138.                with cross-platform interoperability
  139.            o   Operation over a wide and expanding range of local and wide area
  140.                networks including token ring, Ethernet, ISDN and async, and of
  141.                network protocols, including NetBIOS, TCP/IP and APPC (SNA)
  142.            o   Accessibility from the office, home or hotel room
  143.            o   Multi-way conferences, using complex combinations of different
  144.                network types and with heterogeneous local and wide area network
  145.                configurations
  146.            o   Full-function packaging allowing addition of video conferencing
  147.                as and when the hardware cost is justifiable
  148.            o   Future support for integrated voice, video and data conferencing
  149.                using international standard architectures
  150.            o   Future support for applications enabled for collaboration through
  151.                a programming interface providing access to group management and
  152.                multimedia data communications services.
  153.                   P2P is a family of licensed programs that allows users to
  154.            increase their productivity and effectiveness when working with
  155.            others in different locations.
  156.                   Application information may be shared with other users of P2P
  157.            using a chalkboard.  The chalkboard can be seen by all other users
  158.            participating in a real-time conference session.  Everybody sees the
  159.            same information on their screens while discussion takes place over
  160.            the telephone.   The extra dimension offered by a shared chalkboard
  161.            greatly reduces the chances of misunderstanding or ambiguity compared
  162.            with voice communications on their own.
  163.                   Additional utilities provided with P2P allow for files to be
  164.            transferred between users, and system clipboards and DDE objects to
  165.            be shared.
  166.                   Sophisticated but easily understood call management facilities
  167.            are provided for the establishment and modification of conferencing
  168.            sessions.  Multi-way sessions can be set up, with up to eight users
  169.            working together at the same time.  Users may be working on
  170.            applications with P2P on any of the computer platforms now supported,
  171.            connected to other users by local or wide area networks.
  172.                   The use of P2P may be further enhanced by the addition of
  173.            video conferencing hardware, adding yet another dimension to the ways
  174.            that people can improve the effectiveness of working together.
  175.                   P2P is complementary to products such as Lotus Notes (3) and
  176.            Microsoft Windows for Workgroups, providing a real-time interactivity
  177.            over a wide range of different network types that enhance the basic
  178.            group working facilities provided by those products.
  179.                   Use of P2P with remote LAN access is facilitated by the IBM
  180.            LAN Distance set of products that enable remote workstation users,
  181.            such as travelling executives or field personnel, to run their
  182.            LAN-based applications over switched and non-switched wide area
  183.            network connections.
