TITLE IBM PERSON TO PERSON FAMILY OVERVIEW
ABSTRACT Person to Person (TM) (P2P) is the single solution for all
users of desktop systems needing the advantages of real-time
interactive conferencing and collaborative working, whatever the type
of network connection.
P2P collaborative working software announced in November 1992
for OS/2 (R), is now extended with attractively priced new releases
for personal computers running DOS with Microsoft (1) Windows (2).
Person to Person/2 (R) for the OS/2 operating system, is
enhanced with a shared Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) capability between
users and is now able to support networks running APPC/APPN (TM)
communications protocol, providing compatibility with SNA.
The P2P software family includes the following utilities or
applets to help users establish and manage multi-party conferences
from their desktop:
o Call Manager
o Address Book Manager
o Chalkboard
o Clip
o Shared Dynamic Data Exchange
o Talk
o File Transfer
o Video
o Stills Capture.
Related Announcements:

IN BRIEF . . .
Have you been . . .
o to a meeting lately and suddenly realized you had left important
information at your desk?
o spending too much time explaining verbally what could be so
easily communicated visually?
o too often correcting misunderstandings of verbal commitments?
Now you can work together without actually being together.
o You know how effective face-to-face meetings are, with all the
information to show and share. It means fewer misunderstandings
and the "give and take" that is so fundamental to better
communication.
o Just imagine being able to "meet" with your colleagues, suppliers
or customers using just your telephone and workstation.
o All this is possible with P2P family of cost-effective software
for real-time interactive collaborative working, independent of
the operating system or workstation connection.
o The optional video feature enables the personal interaction of a
face-to-face meeting, or to see "real life" objects or video
clips sent from other users.
o Just like conventional meetings, P2P allows increased speed and
accuracy of decision making, increased employee productivity and
use of skilled resources more effectively. These benefits can
translate directly into reductions in office space, travel time
and expense.

OVERVIEW COLLABORATION IN ACTION
P2P has a number of features and options that make desktop
collaboration as easy as dialing a phone or drawing on a chalkboard:
CALL MANAGER acts much like a telephone and must be activated
before meetings can begin. Call Manager provides a direct link to
other participants, and logs and displays information about calls.
Calls can be answered manually, automatically, or barred.
ADDRESS BOOK MANAGER works in conjunction with Call Manager.
The address book is where the name, user ID and telephone numbers are
stored of people you wish to contact using P2P. The Address Book
Manager can be used to initiate a conference and to set up the data
links needed. Alternatively these functions can be set up using
several of the other P2P conferencing utilities.
CHALKBOARD provides the "what you see is what I see"
capability for interactive real-time collaboration and is the key
tool used to share application data with other participants. Multiple
chalkboards can be in action at the same time, and they can be loaded
with bit maps from scanned images, text graphics or any standard
application window. They provide a shared workspace that can be
annotated with a set of simple drawing and text tools.
CLIP is an extension of the OS/2 or Windows clipboard and is
another way of sharing data with others, who are able to "paste" what
you "copy" into one of their own applications.
SHARED DYNAMIC DATA EXCHANGE in OS/2 and Microsoft Windows
allows data to be exchanged continuously and automatically. It
allows workstation applications to communicate with each other while
they are running. Usually these "conversations" are triggered by use
of the clipboard to paste data into an application program using an
item called "Paste link" (or something similar) in the "Edit" menu of
an application program. If CLIP is used to share clipboards, DDE
links can be started between any of the participants in the call and
these continue as long as the call is in progress.
TALK offers a simple method of exchanging text messages with
others through the keyboard, and is especially useful if a separate
telephone link is not available or would not meet the information
security needs.
FILE TRANSFER allows the transfer of files to and from other
users, together with the facility to prefix the file with a message.
VIDEO extends the collaborative sharing of data to include the
visual sharing of either live or recorded motion images of people or
objects. P2P uses the ActionMedia II DVI Technology hardware on
personal computer platforms to capture and compress video in real
time ready for sending over the network to others in the conference.
Up to four other users with ActionMedia II capture hardware can join
in a video conference session, with the ability for each user to
select which one of the remote parties to view. Remote party viewing
of video is also available without additional hardware through use of
the computer main processor.
STILLS CAPTURE allows the capture, using ActionMedia II
hardware on personal computer platforms, of images from video sources
in bit mapped format suitable for sharing with others or for
importation into other applications.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
P2P is the most effective choice of collaborative working software
for those needing:
o A range of popular personal computer and workstation platforms
with cross-platform interoperability
o Operation over a wide and expanding range of local and wide area
networks including token ring, Ethernet, ISDN and async, and of
network protocols, including NetBIOS, TCP/IP and APPC (SNA)
o Accessibility from the office, home or hotel room
o Multi-way conferences, using complex combinations of different
network types and with heterogeneous local and wide area network
configurations
o Full-function packaging allowing addition of video conferencing
as and when the hardware cost is justifiable
o Future support for integrated voice, video and data conferencing
using international standard architectures
o Future support for applications enabled for collaboration through
a programming interface providing access to group management and
multimedia data communications services.
P2P is a family of licensed programs that allows users to
increase their productivity and effectiveness when working with
others in different locations.
Application information may be shared with other users of P2P
using a chalkboard. The chalkboard can be seen by all other users
participating in a real-time conference session. Everybody sees the
same information on their screens while discussion takes place over
the telephone. The extra dimension offered by a shared chalkboard
greatly reduces the chances of misunderstanding or ambiguity compared
with voice communications on their own.
Additional utilities provided with P2P allow for files to be
transferred between users, and system clipboards and DDE objects to
be shared.
Sophisticated but easily understood call management facilities
are provided for the establishment and modification of conferencing
sessions. Multi-way sessions can be set up, with up to eight users
working together at the same time. Users may be working on
applications with P2P on any of the computer platforms now supported,
connected to other users by local or wide area networks.
The use of P2P may be further enhanced by the addition of
video conferencing hardware, adding yet another dimension to the ways
that people can improve the effectiveness of working together.
P2P is complementary to products such as Lotus Notes (3) and
Microsoft Windows for Workgroups, providing a real-time interactivity
over a wide range of different network types that enhance the basic
group working facilities provided by those products.
Use of P2P with remote LAN access is facilitated by the IBM
LAN Distance set of products that enable remote workstation users,
such as travelling executives or field personnel, to run their
LAN-based applications over switched and non-switched wide area
network connections.
