OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
Ultimedia Workplace/2 provides the customer with the ability
to manage, search for and retrieve large numbers of multimedia
objects, such as images, video, audio and text. Objects are
represented by high-quality 256 color icons, which can be "dragged
and dropped" to execute other tools associated with the use of media
objects, such as story editors, image editors and draw programs.
Customers may also access a number of existing SQL databases, such as
DB2/2 (TM), associate an object with an individual SQL record and
create multimedia databases for existing applications, which will
protect customer investment.
Ultimedia Workplace/2 supports the customer's investment in a
number of ways. Through an SQL database, Ultimedia Workplace/2 can
create a multimedia database. Ultimedia Workplace/2 can also access
objects on a LAN.
The customer's productivity can be improved through increased
availability and access to growing collections of media objects.
Ultimedia Workplace/2 provides the customer with the ability to
describe an object with text. When the customer is looking for a
specific object, or an object with particular features (for example,
automobile type: sedan, color: red), a search can be made of the text
descriptors, and the object or group of objects can be located. This
enables the customer to better utilize the already existing
investment in media objects. In addition, Ultimedia Workplace/2
provides the customer with the ability to store and retrieve objects
to and from a LAN.
The user can define extended data attributes to connect data
to the visual representation of media objects without using a
database. This makes it simpler to increase the value of both pieces
of data without buying additional software of installing, and
learning how to use, a database. Ultimedia Workplace/2 also provides
the ability to manage off-line multimedia objects.
A variety of databases can be accessed from Ultimedia
Workplace/2. The databases that can be accessed are OS/2 Database
Manager, dBase IV, DB2/2 and Oracle. OS/2 extended attributes can
also be accessed.
Ultimedia Workplace/2 allows image data transfer between
applications. Through the OS/2 clipboard and Ultimedia Workplace/2
clipdata object, image data can be copied and pasted from a Windows
(3.0, or later) or OS/2 system clipboard to a Workplace Shell (TM)
object, or vice versa.

PRODUCT POSITIONING
The emerging multimedia market has requirements for audio, video,
text and graphics tools.
There are three major areas of opportunity:
1. The first group is application creators who create professional
presentations and applications for a living. Their work is seen
in kiosks and professional demonstrations. They need access to
large amounts of media data quickly.
2. The second group is content providers who create media for use by
other people. This group would use the media library management
functions to package and sell their media to creators. Clip art
manufacturers could provide CD-ROMs with high-quality images,
audio and video for use by application creators. They can use
the functions of Ultimedia Workplace/2 to create packages
tailored to each target audience of media users.
3. The third group is composed of users who can use Ultimedia
Workplace/2 to manage the media contained on a personal computer
(work or home). The library management, visual organization and
flexible, user-defined media organization allows anyone to better
use the media available to them on their personal computer.
From the multimedia support built directly into OS/2 2.1 to
the new multimedia PS/2s, IBM continues its commitment to provide
superior multimedia software with its Ultimedia brand of products.
One of the first IBM multimedia offerings was the award-winning Audio
Visual Connection (R) The Audio Visual Connection is a comprehensive
multimedia authoring product, offering image, audio, graphics, text,
analog (M-Motion) and digital (DVI) full-motion video in one
complete, INTEGRATED package.
With the announcement of Ultimedia Workplace/2, Ultimedia
Builder/2 (refer to Programming Announcement 293-329) and Ultimedia
Perfect Image/2 (refer to Programming Announcement 293-330), a set of
OS/2 2.1 multimedia tools, the customer can now choose a modular
solution. Rather than acquiring one "do-everything" package, a
customer can select the tools best suited for the required tasks and
seamlessly operate these tools to create professional multimedia
applications. In addition, the customer can complement the tools in
the set with the other multimedia tools included in the Ultimedia
Tools Series.
Ultimedia Builder/2, Ultimedia Workplace/2 and Ultimedia
Perfect Image/2 all follow CUA (TM) requirements so that learning to
use one tool can minimize the learning curve of another. Because
these tools were designed to be interoperable, media objects such as
image, audio, and video files can be "dragged" from one tool and
"dropped" into another. Media objects can also be easily exchanged
between Ultimedia Builder/2, Ultimedia Workplace/2 and Ultimedia
Perfect Image/2, and the other tools included in the Ultimedia Tools
Series.
Ultimedia Workplace/2 is an Ultimedia Tools Series object
manager, offering new desktop management capabilities. It simplifies
the challenging task of organizing, annotating, searching for and
browsing images, video clips, audio files and Ultimedia Builder/2
stories. Ultimedia Workplace/2 makes it possible to display all of
an application's media objects simultaneously as icons, as if they
were slides on a photographer's light table. This extension of the
"objects-in-folders" concept of OS/2 2.1 gives the application author
the freedom to "browse" (view and/or listen to) an object, associate
descriptive text with it, link it to a record in one of several
popular databases, such as DB2/2 (TM), and "drag and drop" it into
other multimedia tools.
