  13. ABSTRACT         The VoiceType (TM) Dictation Adapters work in conjunction with 
  14.           the VoiceType Dictation application software to provide               
  15.           speech-to-text function.  The adapters provide computational and      
  16.           memory-efficient speech processing to decode discrete speech into     
  17.           text.  The VoiceType Dictation system allows you to use your voice to 
  18.           enter dictation and control Windows+ Program Manager, OS/2 (R) 2.1    
  19.           Workplace Shell (R), and other applications.                          
  20.                  Three versions of the VoiceType Dictation Adapter support the  
  21.           wide range of PC slots:                                               
  22.           o   PCMCIA                                                            
  23.           o   ISA                                                               
  24.           o   Micro Channel (R)                                                 
  25.                  The adapters provide plugs for attachment of audio devices,    
  26.           such as microphones and loudspeakers.                                 
  27.                  The VoiceType Dictation Microphone is a vendor product that    
  28.           IBM qualified as compatible with the VoiceType Dictation adapters and 
  29.           software.  The microphone accommodates customers who want an          
  30.           additional or alternative microphone.

  32.           VoiceType Dictation and the optional VoiceType Dictation

  79. OVERVIEW  DESCRIPTION                                                           
  80.                  Large vocabulary speech recognition requires considerable      
  81.           computation and memory.  For example, for every word dictated, the    
  82.           system must consider a very large number of possible words in the     
  83.           active vocabulary.  To do this, the system must have immediate access 
  84.           to the acoustic models for all words and all parameters that          
  85.           characterize the speaker's voice.  Consequently, the VoiceType        
  86.           Dictation Adapters are uniquely designed for computational and        
  87.           memory-efficient speech processing that otherwise would be handled by 
  88.           the main processor in the PC.  With memory for speech processing, the 
  89.           adapters enable highly accurate, real-time speech recognition to      
  90.           operate on PCs with 486 processors at speeds as slow as 25MHz.        
  91.                  To support the intense, computational aspects of speech        
  92.           recognition, the VoiceType Dictation Adapters incorporate a digital   
  93.           signal processor (DSP).  The DSP is rated at 25 MIPs with a 16-bit    
  94.           wide, external memory data path, a 16 x 16 multiplier, and a 32-bit   
  95.           arithmetic logic unit (ALU).  Data transfers, multiplication, and ALU 
  96.           operations are independent and all can be active during every         
  97.           instruction cycle.  In addition to the DSP, special processing        
  98.           hardware is included on the adapter to handle arithmetic intensive    
  99.           operations.                                                           
  100.                  The VoiceType Dictation Adapters also include separate         
  101.           instruction and data memories.  The adapters have static RAM and over 
  102.           1MB of dynamic RAM directly addressed by the DSP.  A parallel         
  103.           interface bus provides the processor with high bandwidth access to    
  104.           memory without affecting DSP computation.                             
  105.                  The VoiceType ISA Adapter, the VoiceType Micro Channel         
  106.           Adapter, and the external jack box of the VoiceType PCMCIA Adapter    
  107.           provide the following analog audio interfaces:                        
  108.           o   Line Input                                                        
  109.                      The line input is designed to accept a 3.5 mm mini         
  110.               monaural or stereo jack.  An external pre-amplified microphone or 
  111.               output from an audio player device can be connected to this jack. 
  112.               The line-in input is rated at 700 mVrms and has a 20 KOhm input   
  113.               impedance.

  115.                      The signal from the external microphone is pre-amplified   
  116.               before being passed to the adapter card.  A phantom power of

  123.               2.5 V is also provided from the microphone jack, allowing use of  
  124.               pre-amplified microphones that are not self powered.  The         
  125.               microphone input plug is designed to accept a 3.5 mm mini         
  126.               monaural or stereo jack.                                          
  127.           o   Audio Analog Output                                               
  128.                      This output can be connected to a headphone or a           
  129.               line-level device.  The output is designed to accept a 3.5 mm     
  130.               mini monaural or stereo jack.  An amplified loudspeaker can be    
  131.               connected to the output.  Satisfactory results can be obtained    
  132.               using economical speakers, such as the Radio Shack** 32-2040      
  133.               Compact One-Watt Speaker/Amplifier.                               
  134.           o   Sense Input                                                       
  135.                      This input is intended for sensing the position of an      
  136.               external switch, for example, a microphone with remote control.   
  137.                  The VoiceType Dictation software does not currently support    
  138.           the sense input audio interfaces found on the VoiceType Dictation     
  139.           Adapters.                                                             
  140.                  The VoiceType Adapters have FCC Class B certification.         
  141.                  The microphone requires some assembly by the customer.         
  142.           Instructions are provided.  An audio loudspeaker is optional, but     
  143.           strongly recommended when using this microphone.                      
  144.           PRODUCT POSITIONING                                                   
  145.                  By providing three adapter cards, the widest range of PCs are  
  146.           supported by the VoiceType Dictation application software.  The       
  147.           VoiceType Dictation PCMCIA Adapter represents a significant           
  148.           technological achievement of packaging to facilitate speech           
  149.           recognition by mobile workers.  The PCMCIA adapter now lets you take  
  150.           speech recognition with you.  The PCMCIA adapter is also useful for   
  151.           smaller form-factor desktop PCs that use PCMCIA slots instead of      
  152.           traditional ISA or Micro Channel card slots.  The ISA and Micro       
  153.           Channel versions of the VoiceType Dictation Adapter are useful in     
  154.           desktop or desk-side PCs.                                             
  155.                  For audio feedback, the microphone requires a separate         
  156.           speaker.  The microphone is qualified for use with the VoiceType      
  157.           Dictation products.                                                   
  158.                  Other manufacturers' microphones may not give the same         
  159.           results.  Additionally, unqualified microphones may affect speech     
  160.           recognition accuracy.  For additional information regarding
